Many concepts of external magnetic field applications in crystal growth processes have been developed to control melt convection, impurity content and growing interface shape. Especially, travelling magnetic fields (TMF) are of certain advantages. However, strong shielding effects appear when the TMF coils are placed outside the growth vessel. To achieve a solution of industrial relevance within the framework of the $KRISTMAG^{(R)}$ project inner heater-magnet modules(HMM) for simultaneous generation of temperature and magnetic field have been developed. At the same time, as the temperature is controlled as usual, e.g. by DC, the characteristics of the magnetic field can be adjusted via frequency, phase shift of the alternating current (AC) and by changing the amplitude via the AC/DC ratio. Global modelling and dummy measurements were used to optimize and validate the HMM configuration and process parameters. GaAs and Ge single crystals with improved parameters were grown in HMM-equipped industrial liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) puller and commercial vertical gradient freeze (VGF) furnace, respectively. The vapour pressure controlled Czochralski (VCz) variant without boric oxide encapsulation was used to study the movement of floating particles by the TMF-driven vortices.
Microstructure of A356 aluminium alloys cast in a permanent mold was investigated by optical microscope and image analyzer, with particular respect to the shape and size distribution of iron intermetallics known as ${\beta}-phase$ ($Al_5FeSi$). Morphologies of the ${\beta}-phase$ was found to change gradually with the Be:Fe ratio like these. In Be-free alloys, ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was well developed, but script phase was appeared when the Be:Fe ratio is above 0.2:1. With the Be:Fe ratios of 0.4:1-1:1, script phase as well as Be-rich phase was also observed. In case of higher Be addition, above 1:1, Be-rich phase was observed on all regions of the specimens, and increasing of the Be:Fe ratios gradually make the Be-rich phase coarse. It was also observed that the ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was coarsened with increase of the Fe content in Be-free alloys. However, in Be-added alloys, length and number of these ${\beta}-phases$ were considerably decreased with the increased Be:Fe ratio. It was concluded that Fe impurity element to be crystallized into needlelike intermetallics was tied up by Be addition element, and new phases were crystallized into script or Be-rich intermetallics.
Technical grade n-hexane whose purity is 54% has been purified for HPLC use. Methylcyclopentane, 2-methylpentane, and 3-methylpentane which are hardly isolated by fractional distillation were separated by the liquid-solid chromatography using molecular sieve 5A. UV and fluorescence impurities whose contents are critically regulated for HPLC solvent were removed by the adsorptive separation with alumina and silica gel. The present method also reduced the impurities of color(APHA), acidity, water, residue after evaporation, sulfur, and thiophene content, and the impurity contents were well within the specifications of HPLC solvent.
Correlation between microstructural features and segregation of elements (Si, Mn, P and S) near the mid of thickness in the base metal and the synthetic HAZ was investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the degree of center segregation and weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was also conducted by evaluating the effect of P concentration on the critical applied stress. The results obtained are as follows: 1) Pearlite band, containing the MnS type inclusion and a locally transformed structure with a higher hardness, was observed in the center segregation region. 2) By the weld thermal cycle, center segregation region was transformed to the white band which had a higher hardness than that of base metal due to a greater hardenability of concentrated Mn, P etc.. 3) Weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was mainly dependent on the concentration of impurity elements rather than on the number of the segregated particles near the mid of thickness. 4) During welding, the higher concentrated region was easily changed into white band. Therefore, it could be predicted that the initiation and propagation of a cold crack would be promoted by increasing the restraint stress and hydrogen content.

The passivity behavior of copper anode containing impurities in copper sulfate solution for electrorefining process was studied at several different levels of impurities such as As, Sb, Bi and Pb. The passivity behavior was investigated by electrochemical techniques (galvanostatic, potentiodynamic and cyclic voltammetry tests) and surface analysis (optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy). The results were that arsenic, antimony inhibited passivation and bismuth accelerated it and lead containing anode showed different passivity behavior from above anodes. The improved passivity characteristics could be explained by decrease in oxygen content in passivity film which resulted from a reaction among the impurities, oxygen and copper in the anode. The SEM image revealed that arsenic or antimony containing anode exhibited a porous passivity film and bismuth containing anode showed the compact passivity film and lead containing anode had loose passivity film on anode.
Metallurgical-grade polycrystalline silicon was directionally solidified at growth rates of $0.2{\sim}1.0mm/min$ by using split type, reusable graphite molds which were coated with $Si_3N_4$ powder. The resultant grain sizes of the silicon ingots and the shapes of the solid/liquid(S/L) interfaces were investigated. X-ray diffraction was used to determine the preferred orientation in each of the silicon ingots. The impurity content of the silicon was analyzed and the resistivities of the ingots were measured. During the growth of an ingot, the shape of the S/L interface was concave to the silicon melt, and the resistivity decreased. The presence of Al which can be acting as a carrier, is thought to be the main factor causing such a decrease in resistivity. When a growth rate of 0.2㎜/min was used, the preferred orientation was found to be (111).

Tungsten silicide films were deposited on the phosphorus-doped poly-Si/SiO$_{2}$/Si-substrates by LPCVD (low pressue chemical vapor deposition). The formation and various properties of tungsten silicide processed by furnace annealing in N$_{2}$ ambient were evaluated by using XRD. AFM, 4-point probe and SEM. And the redistribution of phosphorus atoms has been observed by SIMS. The crystal structure of the as-deposited tungsten silicide films were transformed from the hexagonal to the tetragonal structure upon annealing at 550.deg. C. The surface roughness of tungsten polycide films were found to very smoothly upon annelaing at 850.deg. C and low phosphorus concentration in polysilicon layer. The sheet resistance of tungsten polycide low phosphorus concentration in polysilicon layer. The sheet resistance of tungsten polycide films are measured to be 2.4 .ohm./ㅁafter furnace annealing at 1100.deg. C, 30min. It was found that the sheet resistance of tungsten polycide films upon annealing above 1050.deg. C were independant on the phosphorus concentration of polysilicon layer and furnace annealing times. An out-diffusion of phosphorus impurity through tungsten silicide film after annealing in $O_{2}$ ambient revealed a remarkably low content of dopant by oxide capping.
We studied change in water contact angle on $TiO_2$ surfaces upon high-energy electron-beam treatment. Depending on conditions of e-beam exposures, surface OH-content could be increased or decreased. In contrast, water contact angle continuously decreased with increasing e-beam exposure and energy, i.e. change in the water contact angle cannot be rationalized in terms of the overall change in the surfacestructure of carbon-contaminated $TiO_2$. In the C 1s spectra, we found that the C-O and C=O contents gradually increased with increasing e-beam energy, suggesting that the change in the surface structure of carbon layers can be important for understanding of the wettability change. Our results imply that the degree of oxidation of carbon impurity layers on oxide surfaces should be considered, in order to fully understand the change in the oxide surface wettability.

Direct reduced iron was made using an electric furnace. The reduction ratio of direct reduced iron varied depending on the grade of iron ore. Coal played an important role as a reducing agent in making the direct reduced iron. The coal must contain a suitable amount of volatile components having high calorie values and low impurity content. In this study, oxidized pellets were directly reduced using anthracite as a reductant in an electric furnace. Direct reduction behaviors of hematite and magnetite pellets were confirmed in a coal-based experiment. Reduction behaviors were demonstrated by analyzing the chemical compositions, measuring the reducibility, and observing the phase changes and microstructure. The superior reducibility of hematite pellets can be ascribed to their high effective diffusivity, which is due to their high porosity. The quickly after reducing for 40min and achieves a high value at the end of the reduction.
Sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is the preferred technology of the generation-IV fast neutron reactor, and its core body mainly uses nuclear-grade 316 stainless steel. In order to prolong the design life of SFRs to 60 years and more, it is necessary to summarize and analyze the anti-corrosion effect of nuclear grade 316 stainless steel in high temperature sodium environment. The research on sodium corrosion of nuclear grade 316 stainless steel is mainly composed of several important factors, including the microstructure of stainless steel (ferrite layer, degradation layer, etc.), the trace chemical elements of stainless steel (Cr, Ni and Mo, etc) and liquid impurity elements in sodium (O, C and N, etc), carburization and mechanical properties of stainless steel, etc. Through summarizing and constructing the sodium corrosion rate equations of nuclear grade 316 stainless steel, the stainless steel loss of thickness can be predicted. By analyzing the effects of temperature, oxygen content in sodium and velocity of sodium on corrosion rate, the basis for establishing integrity evaluation standard of SFR core components with sodium corrosion is provided.
