Rapid increase of diabetic population is a major health concern in Korea. In a trial to develop food components which can prevent and/or cure diabetes, we investigated the anti-diabetic activity of curcumin in high fat diet (HFD)-induced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) animal model. C57BL/6 mice were divided into three groups: normal diet (ND), high fat diet (HFD), and curcumin (CUR, HFD+0.02% curcumin). Mice were fed each diet for 16 weeks. CUR significantly reduced body weight gain, the levels of plasma glucose, insulin, total-cholesterol (T-C), and LDL-C, whereas increased HDL-C compared to those of HFD group. Notably, insulin signaling pathway was activated by CUR. This suggests that CUR improves obesity-associated T2DM by overcoming insulin resistance in part.
This study was worked to investigate the antioxidant activity and the blood circulation improvement effect of two Hibiscus syriacus extracts divided into fermented H. syriacus extract and non-fermented H. syriacus extract. As the results of in vitro experiment, both of fermented H. syriacus extract and non-fermented H. syriacus extract had the DPPH free radical scavenging effect and the high contents of polyphenol and flavonoid known as antioxidant components in dose-dependent manner. Six weeks female C57BL/6 mice were divide into four groups and fed high diets for 28 days. Also fermented H. syriacus extract and non-fermented H. syriacus extract was daily intraperitoneal administration for 28 days at 2 mg/kg of body weight of mice. In vivo C57BL/6 mice experiment of normal diet group (NOR), high-fat diet group (CON), high-fat diet plus fermented H. syriacus extract group (FHS) and high-fat diet plus non-fermented H. syriacus extract group (NFHS), each of total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein (LDL) was decreased in both of FHS and NFHS groups, meanwhile high density lipoprotein (HDL) was increased (p<0.01). Conclusion, the results confirmed that H. syriacus containing the high contents of the antioxidant activity components had the significant effects of blood circulation improvement.
The purpose of this study was to develop a computerized software program to help for reproductive management in dairy cows. The developed software program in the study is compatible with a window 95/98 or XP system. Data in the system were recorded, stored, and processed from two sources: 1) Data downloaded monthly from the database of the Korean Dairy Herd Improvement Association (milk yields, milk somatic cell counts, milk fat, protein, lactose and urea nitrogen content). 2) Data recorded by the farmer or veterinarians by the time (body condition score, heats, inseminations, veterinary diagnosis and treatments). These data indices after processing by computerized dairy management system were presented by numerical or graphical display. The presented data were obtained from three dairy farms with more than 50 milking cows. The presented reports of this program using milk fat, protein, urea nitrogen, and somatic cell counts enabled the dairy producer and veterinarians to monitor the protein-energy balance and feeding management practice, and for distribution of diseases (mastitis, metabolic and reproductive disorder) in individual cows. The presented analytical reports of this program also included herd average of reproductive indices such as day to first insemination, days open, and inseminations per conception. This software program will assist in analysis, interpretation and demonstrate the results of reproductive trials conducted in dairy herds.
The elderly are the most rapidly growing segment of the population in Korea and the largest consumers of expensive medical care. It is reasonable to believe that improving the nutritional status would be beneficial to reducing morbidity and to impro- ving the quality of their lives. This study was conducted to assess the health status and the Nutritional Risk Index of the elderly, and to provide the basic data for the Elderly Nutrition Improvement Program at the Public Health Center. One hundred and forty seven(76 males. 71 females) aged 60 years and over living in Suwon, were assessed with anthropometric measurements, body fat analysis, blood pressure measurements, and a set of questionnaires about health and other related variables. Over half of them had less than a junior middle school education and were considered low income. The percentage of overweight and obese subjects was 33% by the BMI(Body Mass Index), and the prevalence of hypertension was 28$\%$(males) and 31$\%$(females). They had a lot of self-recognized health problems, the male elderly complained about more than the female elderly. In the case of psychological health status, however, the female elderly showed a higher proportions of depression than the male elderly(p$\ll$0.05). In social health status, the elderly had good relationships with friends and collegues, whereas they had poor relationships with their families. They had many nutritional risk factors, and smoking was the most prevalent risk factor for the male elderly and anemia was for the female elderly. The results of this study suggest that Elderly Nutrition Improvement Programs should be planned that can be easily followed. It would be helpful to design a program focusing on individual phychological and social health status, this would increase the efficiency of the program.
This study aims to investigate the effect of Neuromuscular Re-education Program and Traditional Intervention Program and is focusing on the difference between changes of experimental before and after on 30 stroke patient's body composition, blood lipid levels, physical motor function. The obtained results are as follows; 1. Change in body composition 1) The change due to the Neuromuscular Re-education Program and Traditional Intervention Program before and after, the Fat Mass and Soft Lean Mass were changed but not significantly. 2) In the comparison of change according to duration, Significant differences were not shown in Fat Mass and Soft Lean Masss between The experimental group and control group. 2. Change in blood lipid levels 1) The change due to the Neuromuscular Re-education Program and Traditional intervention Program before and after, the Cholesterol, Glucose and TG were changed but not significantly. 2) In the comparison of change according to duration, Significant differences were not shown in the Cholesterol, Glucose and TG between the Experimental group and Control group. 3. Change in physical motor function 1) The change due to Neuromuscular Reeducation Program before and after. The physical motor function was significantly changed(p<0.01; p<0.05). but Traditional Intervention Program was changed but not significantly. 2) In the comparison of change according to duration, Signicant differences between the Experimental group and Control group was significantly changed in only the Neuromuscular Reeducation Program(p<0.05). In conclusion, The Neuromuscular Reeducation Program were not changed significantly but it can be said that the Neuromuscular Reeducation Program was more suitable for intervention to improve physical motor function of stroke patients than Traditional Intervention Program. Therefore if further studies increase the experimental duration of Reeducation Program and make the patient's reeducation continuously for improvement of physical motor function in stroke patient are needed.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a weight control programs on BMI, nutrition knowledge, physical fitness and stress level of adult obese women. The subjects of this study were 36 adult obese women aged 30-65 years whose BMI were above $23\;kg/m^2$. The weight control program for obese women included nutritional education, exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy for 12 weeks. The BMI of the subjects was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) from $27.1\;kg/m^2$ to $26.4\;kg/m^2$ after the 12 weeks of the weight control program. In addition, the weight of body fat was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) and % body fat was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from 35.4% to 34.9% after completion of the weight control program. In addition, nutritional knowledge (p < 0.001) and eating behavior scores (p < 0.01) were significantly increased. However, the food intake scores were not changed after the program. Stress levels of the adult obese women were significantly decreased (p < 0.001) from 85.63 to 66.88 and also obesity stress levels were significantly decreased (p < 0.01) after the weight control program. In the physical fitness levels of the subjects, muscle endurance (p < 0.05) and ability of balance (p < 0.01) were significantly improved after completion of the weight control program. There were positive significant correlations between general stress and obesity stress level (p < 0.05), and negative correlations between stress level and food intake score (p < 0.05). These results showed that the weight control program for adult obese women may be effectively used to improve weight reduction, physical fitness and stress levels.
Objectives: In 2019, we conducted a 12-week public health promotion program on the use of Korean medical treatments for elderly people who are at potential risk for stroke. A significant improvement effect was obtained through the program. The objective of this study was to report the results of this public health promotion program. Methods: Fifty people participated in the program. The participants were received herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments for stroke prevention for 12 weeks. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and body fat were evaluated twice. A questionnaire was used to assess the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) score, the stroke danger signs, the recognition of stroke signs, and treatment satisfaction. Results: During the 12-week Korean medical treatment program, systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased by 119.40±19.32 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure was decreased by 79.80±8.92 mmHg, and weight was decreased by 58.24±9.70 Kg. The EQ-5D score was increased by 13.82±1.2 and the stroke danger signs score was increased by 26.76±3.59. Sex and EQ-5D score, stroke danger signs score, weight, and body fat were correlated. Age and weight were correlated. Conclusions: For elderly people with the potential risk for stroke, the 12-week Korean medical treatment program was effective and their satisfaction with the treatment was high. This study has significance because this is an unusual report in Korea on the effect of a Korean medical treatment program for stroke using a Korean medicine public health promotion.

Objectives : The present study was conducted to examine whether Cynanchi wilfordii radix (CWR) with or without fermentation has an ameliorative effect on hyperlipidemia in rats.Methods : We analyzed the contents of Conduritol F on Cynanchi wilfordii radix. The experimental animals were divided into six groups; normal diet fed group (N), high cholesterol fed control group (Con), Lovastatin 20 mg/kg (L), CWR-W 300 mg/kg (CWR-W), and CWR-F 300 mg/kg on hyperlipidemia model induced by feeding 1.25% cholesterol. Rats were administrated orally every day for 8 weeks. And lipid profile of serum and weight change were observed.Results : The vehicle displayed a markedly increased body weight and significantly increased liver and epididymal fat weight, however, the administration of CWR improved the body, liver, and epididymal fat weights. All drug treatment reduced significantly the serum level of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol elevated by intake of high cholesterol diet. TG displayed a reducing tendency all drug treatment, however, CWR-W decreased significantly. Atherogenic index and cardiac risk factor increased high cholesterol diet fed control group, while the administration of CWR-W and CWR-F decreased significantly. The major index of liver injury such as AST and ALT improved in all drug treatment.Conclusions : These results suggest that CWR extended the effect of lipid enhanced. Therefore CWR with or without fermentation may be useful for therapeutic treatment of clinical conditions associated with hyperlipidemia. Finally, these require more investigations about the action mechanism of CWR in the future.
In this study, pigs [n=117; (Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc; $64{\pm}0.5$ Kg initial body weight] were used to investigate the effect of feeding different levels of lacquer (Rhus verniciflua Stokes) meal on performance, carcass traits and quality of meat kept under refrigeration at $3{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The pigs were randomly allotted to 3 treatments on the basis of body weight and sex and each treatment was replicated 3 times (13 pigs in each replicate). Lacquer meal in sawdust form obtained from the stem bark and heartwood of sun-dried lacquer trees was added to the grower and finisher diets at 0, 20 and 40 g/kg diet. The experimental diets were fed for 8 wk. Inclusion of lacquer meal had no influence (p>0.05) on growth performance of pigs. Improvement in carcass traits and decreased back fat thickness were noticed in pigs fed diets added with 20 and 40 g/kg lacquer meal. Longissimus muscle obtained from pigs fed lacquer meal had higher moisture and lower fat content, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and water holding capacity. Meat from lacquer fed pigs was also darker and redder. The data indicates that lacquer meal can be incorporated up to 40 g/kg in the diet of fattening pigs without affecting growth performance. Also, lacquer meal increases carcass lean content and improves the oxidative stability of the meat.
A total of 216 day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 6 treatment combined 2 dietary protein regimens (22-20%, 20-18% for starter and finisher, respectively) with 3 times of change (2, 4, 6 weeks) to study the effects of different protein levels and time of change from starter to finisher ration on the performance of broilers. Increasing the dietary protein level resulted in not only a significant increase in the body weight gain and the protein requirement per kg body weight gain, but also an improvement of feed efficiency. However abdominal fat accumulation was decreased by adding incremental levels of protein. On the other hand, the earlier time of change from starter to finisher ration, less\ulcorner\ulcornerbody weight gain and the abdominal fat accumulation. But feed intake and viability were not affected by the dietary protein level and/or the time of change from starter to finisher ration. Income was highest for birds fed 22% and 20% protein diet' starter and finisher, respectively changed from starter to finisher at 4weeks of age.
