  • The dynamic evolution process has resulted in the myriad shapes, functions, and systems evident in every living organism. For centuries, people have been harnessing the power of evolution to produce new varieties of plants and animals, such as producing tomatoes from berries and Chihuahuas from wolves. Now scientists are using it to produce better molecules, ranging from drugs to industrial chemicals, and doing it in days or weeks rather than eons. The ingenious process, which creates genetic diversity and selects those with desired features in the laboratory, is called directed evolution or test tube evolution. In this paper, concepts of directed molecular evolution and some examples will be discussed.

  • For commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles, one of the key objectives is to reduce cost of full stack assembly. Regarding Membrane Electrode Assembly, the major issue is to improve fuel cell activation process in the initial Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction. In this research, the VD (Vacuum Drying) process has been developed for improvement of activation process. The VD condition is developed by controlling the temperature and degree of vacuum to remove the remaining solvent of electrode. Consequently, the electrode applied to VD process showed the low characteristics such as 3.5% of remaining solvent content and the improved efficiency such as 15% of activation process speed.

  • Ball screw systems are largely used in industry for motion control and motor applications. But the problem of noise, which really perplexes us, is highly correlated with the quality in ball screw systems all the way. In this paper, machining process parameters were evaluated in respects of technique, business, produce and quality to verify which impact influences the noise most. In order to adjust and compare, two comparison groups were set with the present parameters bench mark. Different ball screws were produced as specimens for the noise tests. Through comparing the noise performance of different parameters in the machining process respectively, a group of optimized machining process parameters were obtained. Another noise test was proceeded to know how noise performance was improved by optimizing the machining process parameters. At last, surface roughness tests have been done to know how surface roughness improved by optimization. The improvement of surface roughness is the main factor influences the noise performances.

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the airborne concentration of mercury, as well as installation and efficiency of local exhaust ventilation system for 57 factories manufactured fluorescence lamps, mercury lamps and thermometers for July and August 1990. Results and conclusion are as fellows : 1) Mercury treatment factories are 32 among 57 ones, which are 18 fluorescence lamp manufacturing ones and 6 mercury lamp ones and 3 thermometer ones and 5 other ones. 2) Mean airborne concentrations of mercury for factories manufactured mercury lamps are 0.01 mg/ ㎥ in injection process and 0.0155mg/㎥ in exhaust process, and mean airborne concentration of mercury for factories manufactured thermometer are 0.023mg/㎥ in injection process and 0.012mg/㎥ in selection process. All of these airborne concentrations of mercury are lower than PEL(Permissible Exposure Limit ), 0.05mg/㎥. 3) Mean airborne concentrations of mercury for factories manufactured fluorescence lamps are 0.094mg/㎥ in injection process and 0.087mg/㎥ in exhaust process, and 0.052mg/㎥ in sealing process and 0.085mg/㎥ in other process, respectively. All of these air borne concentrations of mercury are exceeded to PEL. More than 60% among 32 factories manufactured mercury are exceeded to PEL. 4) Nine factories among 18 factories manufactured fluorestence lamps are equipped with local exhaust ventilation system, and 7 factories among 9 factories are required for the improvement of suction capacity and structure. Five factories among 14 factories manufactured mercury lamps and the other ones are equipped with local exhaust ventilation system, and 2 factories are required for the improvement of suction capacity and structure.

  • In this article, the excavation and research of cultural assets were set as a process and the improvement measures were considered. To this end, we examined the process of excavating cultural assets to diagnose problems, suggested changes in the format of reports and the establishment of a database, and drew up improvement models for Silla's ancient tombs and research. The problems of the current process of excavating cultural assets are as follows. First, investigation and research fail to integrate and merely comprise 'examination as an administrative procedure' or 'investigation for the sake of investigation', which ultimately hamper research and achievement. Second, there are differences in the composition or description of the report by surveyors or excavation agencies, which make it difficult to integrate data at a higher level. Third, the current form of reporting remains in analog format such as books and PDFs, which not only reduces continuity and efficiency to the research phase, but also lags behind the rapidly changing times. We believe that the improvement of these problems should be achieved by computerizing reports, converting them into digital formats, and establishing them in a database. First, regarding the transition to report format, it was pointed out that the form of excavation data, the final stage of the excavation process, remains analog and the improvement model was presented from the perspective of linking it to excavation and research, and the justification was emphasized through comparison with other cases. Second, the database reviewed the build model for Silla tombs. To this end, the purpose and expected effects, targets, progress, attributes, categories, and interfaces were examined.

  • Continuous quality improvement is now the focus of research and application in quality engineering. To achieve continuous improvement, it's necessary to integrate quality tools and to plan, design and control the whole process of creating quality. Based on the extensive literature review and the philosophy of concurrent quality engineering, the paper analyzes the relationships among major quality tools such as QFD, FMEA, DOE and SPC and presents a basic model and structure for the integration of quality tools.

  • Welding and joining technology has become a core field. Therefore it is more widely applied to nonferrous metals, inorganic and polymeric materials. That is because the high performance, high function and diversification trend of materials used as industrial technology develops. In the laser welding process, STS 304 and SCP1-S were used as the base materials, the output density was fixed $7MW/cm^2$, the protective gas was argon(Ar) and the transfer rate was fixed 5 mm/sec. and it was progressed while the magnetic field is gradually increasing by 100 mT ranging 0 to 400 mT. The tensile test showed in average about 6 % tensile strength improvement in the case of the laser welding process using the magnetic fields. In the shielded metal arc welding process using SPHC only or the combination of SPHC+STS304 as base materials. The electric current was set at 80 Amperes and the protective gas used argon(Ar) the same as the laser welding process and the strength of magnetic fields. In the shielded metal arc welding process using the magnetic fields, the tensile tests showed about 5 % tensile strength improvement in the case of using SPHC only, 3 % tensile strength improvement in the case of using the combination of SPHC+ STS304. In comparing the results of numerical analysis to the results of experimental tests, it was revealed that the temperature, thermal stress distribution and the behavior of molten pool were similar to those of real tests. Consequently, it may be considered that the numerical assumption and the analytical model used in this study were reasonable.
