Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the fitness of adjustable dental impression trays on the Caucasian and African American. Material and methods: The size and shape of these trays were designed from the results of the dental arch size of Korean adults. Tray samples were made by CAD-CAM working. Sixty Caucasian (male:30, female:30) and sixty African American (male:30, female:30) were selected for taking irreversible hydrocolloid impression using these trays. The author measured the width and length of impression material on the several measuring points. Results: 1. Uniform impression material width was achieved by controling the width of the tray using stops and beveled guides. 2. In the maxillary tray on the Caucasian, the impression material thickness was measured to be rather great showing thickness of the midpalatal part 13.0 mm. 3. In the maxillary tray on the African American, the impression material thickness was measured to be rather great showing thickness of the midpalatal part 12.0 mm, posterior palatal part 11.0 mm and the labial frenum width was 11.0 mm. 4. In the maxillary tray on the African American, the impression material width of posterior border (0.8 mm) was measured to be small. 5. In the mandibular tray on the Caucasian, the impression material width was measured (2.7-6.7 mm) and posterior border width (2.1 mm) was measured small. The impression material length was measured (2.8-6.7 mm). 6. In the mandibular tray on the African American, the impression material width was measured to be rather great showing width of the labial frenum 9.2 mm and the width of posterior border was measured too small (0.3 mm). Conclusion: This adjustable dental tray shows good accuracy to Korean because it was designed by the analysis of the dental arch size of Korean adult model. With this result, it can be applied to Caucasian and African American, we can take more easy and accurate dental impressions.

Purpose: We investigated the effect of open tray impression using pick-up impression coping and close tray impression using transfer impression coping on the accuracy of impression in edentulous patients on their mandibular parts. the effect of material types of pick-up type impression copings for splinting in open tray impression on the accuracy of impression was also evaluated. Materials and Methods: Two implant fixtures were implanted in parallel in the left molar of the mandibular in the shape of a mandibular partial edentulous model. The 40 individual trays were fabricated using 3D printer. The prepared individual trays were classified into 4 groups (i.e., PN, PG, PH, and TN groups), and a total of 40 impression-takings were conducted. A master cast was connected to a Scan Body. The converted STL file was super-imposed on the scan images of the various groups. Results: The order of standard deviation values decreased as follows: PN (0.2343 ± 0.0844 mm), TN (0.2192 ± 0.0840 mm), indicating that the high accuracy of impression for TN group. In addition, for the comparison results between the material types used in splinting the open tray impression, the PH group showed a relatively lower standard deviation (0.1910 ± 0.1176 mm) than that of the PN group (0.2343 ± 0.0844 mm), PG group (0.2556 ± 0.1082 mm). Conclusion: The acrylic resin synthesized by light-induced polymerization exhibited a higher accuracy of impression taking than that of autopolymerizing acrylic resin. Meanwhile, the accuracy of impression taking was not dependent on the implant impression taking method or the presence of connection/fixation of impression copings.
Problem : The several studies were reported to the effects of individual tooth tray with the parallel tooth, but not reported to the effect of individual tooth tray with severe undercut in impression making. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of individual tooth tray; 1) the accuracy of impression in terms of distance. 2) reproducibility of pocket. Material and methods : In this study, a metal model with 3 teeth including tooth prepared 30-degree undercut and gingival crevice of the depth 5mm, width 0.4mm was cast. Impressions of the metal model were taken in 5 times used 4 kinds of impression materials with individual tooth tray and another impression taking were made with conventional method without individual tooth, used same materials, procedure. The stone models were made. Distances between abutments were measured with a Micromeasurescoup-mm. Result : The following results were obtained ; 1. In the comparisonof inter-abutment distance between parallel tooth without individual tooth tray, 4elastomeric materials have not significant difference to the metal model(p>0.05). 2. In the comparisonof inter-abutment distance with undercut tooth without individual tooth tray, 4elastomeric materials have a significant difference to the metal model(p<0.05), especially polyether's dimensional change is large. 3. If individual tooth tray was used to take impression in abutment teeth with severe undercut, more stable results was achieved easily than conventional method. (p>0.05). 4. It is not true that the pressure of impression material with individual tooth tray increased to gingival sulcus. Conclusion : By the results, I knew the fact that individual tooth tray was useful impression method on the teeth with severe undercut for the dimensional stability. Also, I could not confirm the fact that individual tooth tray would increase the penetrating pressure into cervice.
Statement of the problem: The cold-cured resins used in fabrication of the provisional crown and fixed partial dentures could cause pulpal damage by heat generated during exothermic polymerization reactions. Purpose: In this in vitro study investigates the how external conditions such as material of the matrix, thickness of the matrix and thickness of dentin affect the temperature of the tooth during polymerization reaction of the cold-cured resins. Material and methods : To measure the temperature of the resin, metal die was maintained to the temperature of $37^{\circ}C$ with water bath to simulate the temperature of thetooth and thermocouple was placed in the center of the metal die. Acrylic pipe was cut in height of 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 mm and placed on the metal die and mixed resin was pored in the acrylic pipe As the resin polymerized temperature was recorded with the thermometer. Temperature of the resin using matrix was recorded by using the individual tray relieved in different thickness 2, 5, 7, 10 mm. The material of the matrix was irreversible hydrocolloid impression material, vinyl polysilloxane impression material and vacuum-formed template Temperature rise of the resin using different thickness of tooth section was record ed by placing tooth section on the metal die and placing resin over the tooth section. Results : Conclusion : 1. Temperature rise increased as the thickness of the resin increased but there was no significant differences over 3 mm thickness of the resin. 2. The lowest temperature rise was showed in irreversible hydrocolloid impression material and vinyl polysilloxane impression material vacuum-formed template as in orders. 3, Temperature rise of the resin decreased regardless of the thickness of the matrix when vinyl polysilloxane impression material was used as the matrix. 4 When irreversible hydrocolloid impression material was used as matrix, the temperature rise of the resin decreased as the thickness of the matrix increased and there was no temperature rise when thickness of the matrix reached 10 mm, 5. The temperature rise of the resin did not decreased when Polypropylene vacuum-formed template was used as the matrix. 6, The temperature of the resin increased as the thickness of the dentin decreased.
Statement of problem: Major objective in making on implant-supported prosthesis is the production of superstructure that exhibits a passive fit when connected to multiple abutments. One requirement to ensure passive fit is to make an accurate impression. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of master cast fabricated by using different impression methods at the different impression levels. Material and method: The master model used in this study was resin block having low implant analogs. Impression method studied were 1) direct method on fxiture level (Group FIX-D), 2) indirect method on fixture level(Group FIX-I), 3) modified indirect method on fixture level(Group FIX-M), 4) direct method on abutment level(Group AB-D) and 5) indirect method on abutment level(Group AB-I). Each of the five groups took 10 impressions. Fifty impressions were made for master cast by using Impregum $F^{(R)}$ impression material loaded on individual tray. Three dimensional measuring microscope was used to measure the inter-implant distance. Error rate of each inter-implant distance were calculated and evaluated. Results : The results were as follows. 1. Group FIX exhibited higher accuracy than group AB. 2. In group FIX, modified indirect method showed the highest accuracy, while indirect method showed the lowest accuracy. In group Ab, indirect method showed the higher accuracy than direct method. 3. Group FIX showed larger horizontal error than group AB. But, group AB showed the larger vertical error than group FIX. 4. Group Fix-M showed smallest vertical and horizontal error. Conclusion: An impression method have more effect on accuracy of master model than an impression level. A modified indirect method showed smallest vertical and horizontal error.
PURPOSE. To compare the dimensional accuracy of three impression techniques- a separating foil impression, a custom tray impression, and a stock tray impression. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A machined mandibular complete-arch metal model with special modifications served as a master cast. Three different impression techniques (n = 6 in each group) were performed with addition-cured silicon materials: i) putty-wash technique with a prefabricated metal tray (MET) using putty and regular body, ii) single-phase impression with custom tray (CUS) using regular body material, and iii) two-stage technique with stock metal tray (SEP) using putty with a separating foil and regular body material. All impressions were poured with epoxy resin. Six different distances (four intra-abutment and two inter-abutment distances) were gauged on the metal master model and on the casts with a microscope in combination with calibrated measuring software. The differences of the evaluated distances between the reference and the three test groups were calculated and expressed as mean (${\pm}SD$). Additionally, the 95% confidence intervals were calculated and significant differences between the experimental groups were assumed when confidence intervals did not overlap. RESULTS. Dimensional changes compared to reference values varied between -74.01 and $32.57{\mu}m$ (MET), -78.86 and 30.84 (CUS), and between -92.20 and 30.98 (SEP). For the intra-abutment distances, no significant differences among the experimental groups were detected. CUS showed a significantly higher dimensional accuracy for the inter-abutment distances with -0.02 and -0.08 percentage deviation compared to MET and SEP. CONCLUSION. The separation foil technique is a simple alternative to the custom tray technique for single tooth restorations, while limitations may exist for extended restorations with multiple abutment teeth.
To determine the factors to affect on stone surface porosities produced from hydrogen gas of additional silicone, both putty and syringe type of 7 commercially different additional silicone impression materials(Blend-A-Scon, Correct VPS, Exaflex, Express, Extrude, Provil, Reprosil) were chosen and NewFujirock(GC) was poured into the impressions of detail-reproducing test block at 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes after the impression materials had set and 4 specimens were made for each pouring time, each type of impression material, and each consisency and So, 280 specimens were made in total. The number of surface porosities of same area($2826 mm^2$) which were typically caused by hydrogen gas using the stereoscope(X 7.5) by two observers. Comparison of putty-syringe type and among the impression materials are tested by Kruscal-Wallis method and Mann-Whitney method(p<0.05). The results are as follows. 1. The number of porosities decreased as the pouring time of stone was delayed on both putty and syringe type of additional silicone materials. 2. The putty type significantly produced more porosities than syringe type except for the group of Reprosil.(p<0.05). 3. In case of putty type, the number of porosities increased as following order. Reprosil / Blend-A-Scon and Provil / Correct VPS and Extrude / Express and Exaflex. 4. In case of syringe type, Blend-A-Scon and Extrude produced no porosity and Exaflex and Provil at 30 minites, but Express produced porosities even at 60 minutes and the most. Additional silicone impression material releases hydrogen gas, and that fact can make the resulting die stone model useless. So, to minimize these adverse effects, it is desirable not to expose putty type of additional silicone on critical impression surface because putty type has a tendency to produce more porosities than syringe type. And it is important to have sufficient time before pouring the stone on impression because porosities produce less as time passes after setting of impression material. Also, there are differences among 7 additional silicone impression materials, so it is desirable to choose adequate brand of additional silicone for good laboratory work.
This study was designed to investigate the marginal accuracy of resin temporary crown with different matrix in indirect technique. Matrices were made from irreversible hydrocolloid impression material, putty type of vinyl polysiloxane silicone rubber and vacuum formed plastic sheet. The marginal discrepancies of the temporary crowns were measured using a measuring microscope. The obtained results were as follows 1. The marginal accuracy temporary crown using vinyl polysiloxane silicone rubber or vacuum formed plastic form was better than that of the temporary crown using irreversible hydrocolloid impression material. 2. The marginal accuracies of the temporary crown using the irreversible hydrocolloid impression material and putty type of the vinyl polysiloxane silicone rubber obtained the best results at the distal measuring point. 3. The vacuum formed plastic form was recorded a more acceptable marginal accuracy at the distal and mesial measuring points.
This study was designed to investigate the fitness of stock tray in Korean adults. 107 dental students (male: 87, female: 20) who have normal occlusion and symmetric facial fom were selected. The upper and lower stock tray (Osungtray, Osung Co., Korea) fit with dental arch were selected for taking irreversible hydrocolloid impression. The author measured the thickness of impression material about two items, that is, width and length on the flange of stock tray. Several measuring points on the dental arches and palatal area were checked with Goldman Fox prove (Hu-Friedy, U.S.A.). The obtained results were as follows: 1. The width of impression material on buccal flange of upper and lower trays were narrower than any other measuring point, but the thickness of impression material on the palatal area of upper stock tray was the widest of all measuring points. 2. The length on buccal flange of lower stock tray was shorter, but the length on tray flange of lower stock tray at lingual frenum area was longer. 3. On upper dental arch, the upper extra-large tray was used in 53% of subjects, but upper small tray was not used. 4. On lower dental arch, the large tray was used in 55% of subjects. 5. There was not adequate tray on upper dental arch in 4 subjects.
Purpose: This study examined the effect of wettability of gypsum materials and rubber impression material on the marginal fitness of zirconia copings. Methods: Three commercially available gypsum materials(Fugirock EP, Snow Rock, Tuff Rock) and three zirconia blocks(iJAM Emerald, LUXEN Smile block, ICE Zirkon transluzent) were studied. The zirconia copings were fabricated by using dental CAD/CAM system. Contact angles on the impression materials were measured with contact angle measuring device. Silicone replica method was used to measure the marginal fitness and cutting was performed on the bucco-lingual and mesio-distal sides. It were observed with a stereomicroscope at °ø40 magnification. The data were statistically analyzed with One-way ANOVA. Results: Mean values of contact angles were $58.3{\pm}0.7^{\circ}$ for Tuff Rock, $77.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Fugirock EP and $87.8{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Snow Rock and the difference between them was statistically significant(p<0.05). The smallest values of marginal fitness for the JF groups were $30.7{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for bucco-lingual direction, $29.3{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for mesio-distal direction. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fitness(p<0.05). Conclusion: Tuff rock gypsum material had superior wettability to others. The mean marginal fitness of the Tuff rock gypsum material group were significantly better than other groups. Thus they can be also expected to show clinically satisfactory marginal fitness.
