  • In this study, we measured that fire characteristics of four wood species using indoor finish materials. Wooden specimens were treated with fire retardant chemicals such as diammonium phosphate and potassium carbonate. The wooden specimens are Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, Cryptomeria japonica, and Chamaecyparis obtusa, which are used for indoor finish. The heat release rate (HRR) values of fire retardant treated woods were confirmed lower than that of untreated woods. For specific details, the HRR values of vacuum impregnated specimens for Pinus koraiensis and Cryptomeria japonica were measured lower than coatings. However, those of Larix kaempferi and Chamaecyparis obtusa showed the opposite effect to it. Total heat release rate values of all wooden specimens, vacuum impregnated were lower than coated specimens.

  • Steam reforming (SR) of glycerol, a main by-product of manufacturing process of bio-diesel, for the production of hydrogen was investigated over the Ni-based catalysts. The Ni-based catalysts were prepared by an impregnation method, and characterized by $N_2$ physisorption, CO chemisorption, XRD and TEM techniques. It was found that the Ni/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed higher conversion and catalytic stability for the carbon formation than the other catalysts in the steam reforming of glycerol under the tested conditions. The results suggest that the steam reforming of glycerol over modified Ni/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst minimized carbon formation can be applied in hydrogen station for fuel-cell powered vehicles and fuel processor for stationary and portable fuel cells.

  • This study is concerned with the oxidation of carbon monoxide on platinum and platinum-palladium catalysts. Catalysts were made by the impregnation method and flow reactor was used in the catalytic reaction. As for the mixed gases, carbon monoxide concentration varied from 1 to 4% and that of oxygen from 1 to 4%. $N_2$ was used as carrier gas and GHSV varied from 24, 000 $h^{-1} to 60, h^{-1}$. The temperature range was from 200 to $600^\circ$C. It was also taken into consideration that the heat and mass transfer resistance of our catalysts was negligible in the study. Experimental results showed that platinum-palladium catalyst was about 1.5-3.9% superior to platinum catalyst in conversion yield. When we used platinum-palladium catalyst, we observed that carbon monoxide oxidation was found to be 1 st order with respect to carbon monoxide concentration. Activation energy of the catalyst was 23.5 kcal/mol.

  • The characteristics of nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition were studied to utilize the nitrous oxide as a propellant. The Ru and Pt were selected as nitrous oxide decomposition catalysts and loaded in the $Al_2O_3$ support using an impregnation method. The nitrous oxide conversions as a variation of GHSV and reaction temperature were measured in a tubular reactor. At the low GHSV and high temperature, the conversion was increased, and Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed better performance than Pt/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst.

  • A metal organic framework-supported Nickel nanoparticle (Ni-MOF-5) was successfully synthesized using a simple impregnation method. The obtained solid acid catalyst was characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalyst was highly crystalline with good thermodynamic stability (up to $400^{\circ}C$) and high surface area ($699m^2g^{-1}$). The catalyst was studied for the oxidation of ethyl benzene, and the results were monitored via gas chromatography (GC) and found that the Ni-MOF-5 catalyst was highly effective for ethyl benzene oxidation. The conversion of ethyl benzene and the selectivity for acetophenone were 55.3% and 90.2%, respectively.

  • Fabrication of carbon fiber reinforced composites was carried out by hand lay-up method. Carbon nanofibers and SiC nanofibers were used as filler in the composites fabrication. Carbon nanofibers, one of the new carbon materials, have 5∼500 nm in diameter and 5-10 nm in length. SiC nanofibers were modified by silicon monoxide vapor with carbon nanofibers. The composites were carbonized at 1000$^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere, and then densified by molten pitches impregnated in vacuum. Multiple cycles of liquid pitch impregnation and carbonization were carried out to obtain a desired density. The composites were characterized by density, microstructure. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) test was performed for mechanical properties. For the new application, the microwave reflective proeprty of composites was investigated. Dielectric constant and permeability spectrum were measured in 12∼18 GHz frequency ranges. On the basis of the wave propagation theory in a lossy media, the reflection loss from the composite inter-layer was predict as a function of frequency.

  • Solid acid Mo(VI)/$ZrO_2$ with 2-10% Mo(VI) was coated on honeycomb monoliths by impregnation method. These catalytic materials were characterized by BET, $NH_3$-TPD/n-butylamine back titration, PXRD and SEM techniques. Phenyl salicylate (Salol) was synthesized via transesterification of methyl salicylate and phenol over these catalytic materials. An excellent yield (91.0%) of salol was obtained under specific reaction conditions. The effect of poisoning of acid sites of the catalytic material by adsorbing different bases and its effect on total surface acidity, powder XRD phases and catalytic activity was studied. A triangular correlation between the surface acidity, powder XRD phases and catalytic activity of Mo(VI)/$ZrO_2$ was observed. The thermally regenerated catalytic material was reused repeatedly with a consistent high yield of salol.

  • To remove SO$_2$ from flus gas, cupric oxide, manganese oxide and iron oxide were studied with varying loading value. The experiment was carried out in a flow reactor and the reactants were prepared by impregnation method using alumina. The reaction temperature was varied from 30$0^{\circ}C$ to 45$0^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that all of these metal oxides were effective on SO$_2$ removal reaction and cupric oxide was the best reactant. The sample with 10wt% loading value was better reactant than with 20wt% because in case of 20wt% loading, metal dispersion on the alumina surface was not uniform. And the SO$_2$ removal efficiency was increased with the reaction temperature.

  • Graphene has attracted an increasing attention due to its extraordinary electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties. Especially, the two dimensional (2D) sheet of graphene with an extremely high surface to volume ratio has a great potential in the preparation of multifunctional nanomaterials, as 2D supports to host metal nanoparticles (NPs). Copper oxide is widely used in various areas as antifouling paint, p-type semiconductor, dry cell batteries, and catalysts. Although the copper oxide(II) has been well known for efficient catalyst in C-N cross-coupling reaction, copper oxide(I) has not been highlighted. In this research, CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on the surface of grapehene oxide (GO) have been synthesized by impregnation method and their morphological and electronic structures have been systemically investigated using TEM, XRD, and XAFS. We demonstrate that both CuO and Cu2O on graphene presents efficient catalytic performance toward C-N cross coupling reaction. The detailed structural difference between CuO and Cu2O NPs and their effect on catalytic performance are discussed.
