  • In this paper, the response surface method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a multi-blade centrifugal fan, is described. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - c turbulence model are transformed into non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Due to the large number of blades in this centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models for economic calculations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. Design variables, location of cur off, radius of cut off, expansion angle of scroll and width of impeller were selected to optimize the shapes of scroll and blades. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a forward-curved blades centrifugal fan. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. In order to reduce huge computing time due to a large number of blades in forward-curved blades centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models. Three geometric variables, i.e., location of cut off, radius of cut off, and width of impeller, and one operating variable, i.e., flow rate, were selected as design variables. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. And, optimum design flow rate was found by using flow rate as one of design variables. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller and diffuser blades in the centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was evaluated. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various values of impeller and diffuser parameters, which consist of leading edge (LE) angle, trailing edge (TE) angle, and blade thickness. Each of the parameters was divided into three levels. A total of 45 design points were planned using central composite design (CCD), which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces that were generated on the basis of the results of DOE were used to determine the optimal shape of impeller and diffuser blade. The entire process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Through the optimization, isentropic efficiency and pressure recovery coefficient, which are the main performance parameters of the centrifugal compressor, were increased by 0.3 and 5, respectively.

  • Effects of design variables on the performance of a double-inlet centrifugal blower have been analyzed based on the three-dimensional flow analysis. Two design variables, blade inlet and outlet angles, are introduced to enhance a blower performance. General analysis code, ANSYS-CFX13, is employed to analyze internal flow and a blower performance. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the shape optimization of an impeller at the design flow condition, the blower efficiency and pressure are successfully increased by 4.7 and 1.02 percent compared to reference one. It is noted that separated flow observed near cut-off region can be reduced by optimal design of blade angles, which results in stable flow pattern in the blade passage and increase of a blower performance. The stable flow at the impeller also makes good effects at the outlet of a volute casing.

  • The pump-turbine impeller is the key component of pumped storage power plant. Current design methods of pump-turbine impeller are private and protected from public viewing. Generally, the design proceeds in two steps: the initial hydraulic design and optimization design to achieve a balanced performance between pump mode and turbine mode. In this study, the 3D inverse design method is used for the initial hydraulic impeller design. However, due to the special demand of high performance in both pump and reverse mode, the design method is insufficient. This study is carried out by modifying the geometrical parameters of the blade which have great influence and need special consideration in obtaining the high performance on the both modes, such as blade shape type at low pressure side (inlet of pump mode, outlet of turbine mode) and the blade lean at blade high pressure side (outlet of pump mode, inlet of turbine mode). The influence of the geometrical parameters on the performance characteristic is evaluated by CFD analysis which presents the efficiency and internal flow results. After these investigations of the geometrical parameters, the criteria of designing pump-turbine impeller blade low and high sides shape is achieved.

  • An optimization process was developed to improve mixed-flow pump performance. The optimization process was combined with CFX (a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code) and HEEDS (an optimization code). CFX is a widely used CFD software for turbo machinery, whereas HEEDS, which uses the SHERPA algorithm, is a newly introduced optimization code. HEEDS can use a large number of optimization variables; thus, it is possible to effectively consider interaction effects. In this paper, an impeller model, which is already optimized with design of experiments (DOE), is used as the base model. The optimization process developed in this paper shows an improved design within an acceptable timeframe.

  • This paper presents the hydraulic design an impeller and radial diffuser of a high-pressure multistage pump for reverse osmosis. The flow distribution and hydraulic performance for the meridional design of the impeller were analyzed numerically. Optimization was conducted based on the response surface method by varying the hub and shroud meridional curvatures, while maintaining the impeller outlet diameter, outlet width, and eye diameter constant. The analysis results of the head and efficiency with the variation in the impeller meridional profile showed that angle of the front shroud near the impeller outlet (${\varepsilon}Ds$) had the highest effect on head increase, while the hub inlet length ($d_{1i}$) and shroud curvature (Rds) had the highest effect on efficiency. From the meridional profile variation, an approximately 0.5% increase in efficiency was observed compared with the base model (case 25).

  • In this study, a lightweight wide impeller for large-area surface treatment was designed and structural stability was confirmed based on finite element(FE) analysis. A lightweight bracket FE model was established through topology optimization, and the optimal FE model was selected after structural analysis. The bending deformation FE analysis was performed, and bending deformation was included in the allowable deformation range. In addition, FE modal analysis was performed, and the range of safe speed(RPM) by rotation was suggested. Ultimately, it was confirmed that this analytical technique is effective for design the lightweight wide impeller.

  • In order to improve efficiency of a system with three-dimensional flow characteristics, this paper presents a new method that overcomes three-dimensional effects by using two-dimensional CFD and neural network. The method was applied to shape optimization of cut-off in a multi-blade fan/scroll system. As the entrance conditions of two-dimensional CFD, the experimental values at the positions out of the inactive zone were used. The distributions of velocity and pressure obtained by two-dimensional CFD were compared with those of three-dimensional CFD and experimental results. It was found that the distributions of velocity and pressure have qualitative similarity. The results of two-dimensional CFD were used for teaming as target values of neural network. The optimal angle and radius of cut-off were determined as 71$^{\circ}$and 0.092 times the outer diameter of impeller, respectively. It is quantified in the previous report that the optimal angle and radius of cut-off are approximately 72$^{\circ}$and 0.08 times the outer diameter of impeller, respectively.
