  • A porous tube, comprised of a resin-coated woven fabric has recently been used as an effective component for use in intake systems of internal combustion engines to reduce the intake roaring. For the prediction of the acoustic performance of an engine intake system with a porous woven hose, the acoustic wall impedance of the hose must be known. Because of its peculiar acoustical and structural characteristics, the accurate measurement of the wall impedance ofa porous woven hose is not easy. A new measurement technique is proposed herein, that is valid over the low to mid frequency ranges. The acoustics impedance is inversely estimated from an overdetermined set of measured pressure transmission coefficients for specimens of different lengths and the reflection coefficient of end termination. The method involves only one measurement, and, as a result, it is very simple. The measured TL for samples with arbitrary conditions, arbitrary porous frequency, arbitrary length, and arbitrary mean flow condition, are in reasonably good agreement with values predicted from curve-fitted impedance data.

  • When measuring the sound absorption coefficient of a specimen, a reverberation room which is costly or an impedance tube which has limitations in measuring low frequencies have been engaged. In this paper, a new measurement method of acoustic impedance or sound absorption coefficient has been suggested, which does not need microphones and only uses electrical impedance measurement data and derived Thiele/Small parameters of a speaker. The theory of this method has been described using equivalent circuit of the loudspeaker and acoustic properties of a test specimen are measured to demonstrate the validity of this method. It was confirmed that this method can easily measure the sound absorption coefficient in the low frequency band, which was previously difficult to trust. The advantages, limitations, and applicability of this method are discussed.

  • The objective of this study is do obtain the relationship between the acoustic mode and cavity tone induced in a perforated tube exhaust muffler. First, the modal frequency for the axisymmetric radial mode and the mode shape have been computed using the impedance model for the perforated tube. Then, experiment has been perfonned for the onset frequencies of the cavity tone for various design parameters and through-flow. The theoretically obtained modal frequencies are well consistent with the measured onset frequencies of the cavity tone, showing that the cavity tone is induced by the axisymmetric radial mode. And it is found that the modal frequency of a perforated tube muffler is much lower than that of a simple expansion chamber.

  • The acoustic characteristics of perforated tube muffler are studied in terms of non-dimensional wavenumber ka and admittance-ratio AZ. This study includes not only the case of perforated tubes having uniform hole distribution along the length but also the case of having non-uniform hole distributions. The acoustic hole impedance and transmission loss of perforated tube of which has various hole distributions were measured. The experimental results demonstrated that the transmission loss of perforated tube is a function of non-dimensional wave number ka and admittance-ratio AZ. The transmission loss of perforated tube muffler is predicted by the numerical method which is based on Sullivans and compared with the experimental ones.

  • In an attempt to determine the correlations between the input acoustic impedance and the variations of the physical characteristics of the terminal elements, a five-lobe branched tube-network is mathematically developed and experimentally simulated using a lung simulator. The model takes into account some realistic conditions such as varying cross-sectional areas, flexible wall properties and branching. The effects of airway constrictions expressed by lobe stiffness variations on the impedance are determined for a range of frequencies up to 256 Hz. It is concluded that the developed model is capable of non-invasively predicting various physiological changes in the airway passages.

  • The acoustical performance of porous materials is determined by their seven or more macroscopic physical properties. However, it is not easy to measure all these properties in many cases. Furthermore, the measurement is compels engineers to spend much times. The effect of each property on the normal incidence absorption coefficient and normalized surface impedance was studied to estimate the properties of porous materials by numerical method. According to the investigation, Properties of porous materials are divided into several groups and estimated by each group. This paper is focused on the estimation procedure of porous materials by the numerical method.

  • The interaction between the flow of the nozzle and the acoustic motion in the combustion chamber acts as an important factor in suppressing combustion instability where nozzle damping effect can be evaluated by nozzle admittance. In this study, Modified Impedance Tube experiment is implemented to predict the acoustic nozzle damping effect. The experimental admittances are compared to numerical admittances values which are calculated from one-dimensional linearized Euler equation of Crocco's theory. As a result, it was possible to identify qualitatively the tendency between increasing and decreasing parts. Also, Efficient frequency bands of nozzle attenuation can be predicted.

  • This paper presents an analysis of RPC probe signal in steam generator tube with defect using finite element method. Impedance signal is calculated according to the depth variation of defect in tube and change of frequency in same defect. As the depth of the defect and the operating frequency is increased, the magnitude of the signal is increased. From the result of this paper, we can obtain the information by the effect of defect and frequency.

  • This study investigated the tri-metallic galvanic coupling of different metals in the tubes, fillers, and fins of a heat exchanger. The goal was to prevent corrosion of the tubes using the fin as a sacrificial anode while ensuring that the filler metal has a more noble potential than the fin, to avoid detachment. The metals were arranged in descending order of corrosion potential, with the noblest potential assigned to the tube, followed by the filler metal and the fin. To address a reduction in protection current of the fin, the filler metal was modified by adding Zn to decrease its corrosion potential. However, increasing the Zn content of filler metal also increases its corrosion current. The study examined three different filler metals, considering their corrosion potential, and kinetics. The results suggest that a filler metal with 1.5 wt.% Zn addition is optimal for providing cathodic protection to the tube while reducing the reaction rate of the sacrificial anode.
