Exact Evaluation of a Sommerfeld Integral for the Impedance Half-Plane Problem (임피던스 반 평면에 대한 Sommerfeld 적분의 Closed-Form 계산)

  • In this paper, a Sommerfeld integral for an impedance half-plane is considered, which is one of classical problems in electromagnetic theory. First, the integral is evaluated into two series representations which are expressed in terms of exponential integral and Lommel function, respectively. Then based on the Lommel function expansion, an exact, closed-form expression of the integral is formulated, written in terms of incomplete Weber integrals. Additionally, based on the exponential integral expansion, an approximate expression of the integral is obtained. Validity of all formulations derived in this paper is demonstrated through comparisons with a numerical integration of the integral for various situations.

  • The impedance approximation has been widely used to model an earth surface such as ocean surface. In calculation of the dyadic Green's function for the impedance half plane, Sommerfeld integral and its partial derivatives are required. It is known that two far-field approximation of the Sommerfeld integral can be represented in terms of Legendre or Laguerre polynomials. Hence, a criterion is required to choose one of two far-field approximations for a given application, which can be expressed in a complex plane of the surface impedance. Also, we approximate the required partial derivatives of Sommerfeld integral and numerically verify the accuracy of the approximation.

  • In this paper, a novel triple-band circular-ring monopole antenna with a half-circular ring and ground slot for wireless local area network/Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access (WLAN/WiMAX) applications is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of one circular ring, a half-circular ring and a rectangular slot in the ground plane. Based on the concept, a prototype of the proposed triple-band antenna was designed, fabricated and tested. The numerical and experiment results demonstrated that the proposed antenna satisfied the -10 dB impedance bandwidth requirement while simultaneously covering the WLAN and WiMAX bands. Furthermore, this paper presents and discusses the 2D radiation patterns and 2D gains according to the results of the experiment.

  • The electrochemical methods of early detection and analysis of corrosion related deterioration in concrete reinforcement structures are very useful techniques. The generally using procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell potential measurement. Whilst the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation, particularly when assessing corrosion rates of reinforcement. The aim of this study is to describe the AC-impedance method being employed to monitor and assess corrosion rates, to estimate corrosion mechanism of reinfrocement in laboratory conditions. The AC-impedance monitoring technique applies a small amplitude(20mV) AC signal to embedded steel in concrete and reference electrode (Cu/$CuSo_4$). We obtained over a wide frequency range(10MHz~1mHz) to produce a complex plane plot or Nyquist plot.

Miniaturization of UWB Antenna Using Open Ended Stepped Slot (개방 종단된 계단형 슬롯을 사용한 UWB용 안테나의 소형화)

  • In order to reduce the size of the previous stepped slot antenna for UWB applications(3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz) to half, an open ended stepped slot antenna is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a stepped slot etched on the ground plane as radiation part and a microstrip feed-line with rectangular patch on the top plane for wideband impedance matching. The proposed antenna is designed and fabricated on the FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.3, thickness of 1.6 mm and size of $28.5{\times}32mm^2$. The measured impedance bandwidth (${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}{\leq}-10dB$) of the fabricated antenna is 7.99 GHz(3.01~11 GHz) which is sufficient to cover UWB band (3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz). In particular, it has been observed that antenna has a good omnidirectional radiation patterns and high gain over the entire frequency band of interest even though the size of the proposed antenna is reduced to half when compared with the previous antenna.

An Approximate Formulation for Scattering by Very Thin Dielectric Scatters (얇은 유전체의 산란특성 해석을 위한 근사식)

  • In this paper, a novel approximate solution for scattering by a very thin planar homogeneous dielectric scatterer with an arbitrary shape is formulated. This solution is based on a volumetric integral equation and is expressed in terms of Fourier transform. It is shown that the obtained solution is reduced to an exact solution for an infinite dielectric slab. For 2D, or 3D scatterers, the formulation is verified numerically. Especially fur edge-on TM polarized wave incidence a closed-form solution of backscattering from a thin dielectric half-plane is formulated, which is very accurate for wide range of normalized surface impedance except very low impedances(│η│〈0.5).

Slit Folded Type Microstrip Antenna for Omnidirectional E-plane and H-plane (전방향성 E & H면 슬릿 Folded형 마이크로스트립 패치 안테나)

  • A linearly polarized folded type and H-shape slit folded type microstrip patch antenna at GPS(center frequency:1.575 GHz) were designed and fabricated by folding a conventional single $\lambda_{g}/2(\lambda_{g}:wavelength)$ rectangular patch a half along the length direction at the center of patch and inserting ground plane in the middle. As a result, two types of omnidirectional radiation patterns for E-plane (for zx-plane) in the direction of the length of patch and H-plane (for xy-plane) have been acquired. The experimental results show that the average gains of folded type and slit folded type for omnidirectional E-plane and H-plane are -1.5 dBd (-2.4 dBd) and -3.27 dBd(-2.5 dBd). Slit folded type microstrip patch antenna was more miniaturized than folded type microstrip patch antenna by 27.5 %. In case of slit folded type antenna, average gains of omnidirectional radiation pattern for E & H-plane are almost same.

  • In this paper, a simple design method is represented for a contiguous-band waveguide manifold diplexer which employs a half-wavelength line at the input port of the singly terminated bandpass filterand has resonant-slot coupled E-plane T-junctions. This design method is based on the fact that the input impedance characteristics of the singly terminated bandpass filter are approximately unchanged when a resonant slot and a half-wavelength line at the input port of the filter are employed. This design method is also applicable to the design of the multiplexer. A contiguous-band waveguide manifold diplexer using the post coupled cavity filters is designed, constructed, and tested. The computed and experimental results show the validity of the theory.

  • We have introduced a new approach to obtain the conductivity information of subsurface using Cagniard impedance over two-dimensional (2-D) model in the presence of horizontal magnetic dipole source with the frequency range of $1\;kHz\~1\;MHz$. Firstly, we designed the method to calculate the apparent resistivity from the ratio between horizontal electric and magnetic fields, Cagniard impedance, considering the source effects when the plane wave assumption is failed in finite source EM problem, and applied it to several numerical models such as homogeneous half-space or layered-earth model. It successfully provided subsurface information even though it is still rough, while the one with plane wave assumption is hard to give useful information. Next, through analyzing Cagniard impedance and apparent resistivity considering source effect over 2-D models containing conductive- or resistive-block, we showed that the possibility of obtaining conductivities of background media and anomaly using this approach. In addition, the apparent resistivity considering source effect and phase pseudosections constructed from Cagniard impedance over the isolated conductive- and resistive block model well demonstrated outlines of anomalies and conductivity distribution even though there were some distortions came from sidelobes caused by 2-D body.

Design of mobile communication antenna for total monitoring of the security light (보안등의 통합 모니터링을 위한 이동통신용 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a half-wavelength folded-slot antenna, which can be applied to RF module for 3G mobile communications by which security lights are monitored and controlled, is proposed. The proposed antenna can be regarded as modified folded-slot structure which has the size reduced to a half of conventional ${\lambda}g$ folded-slot antenna and can be placed at the ground plane edge. In spite of that, the proposed antenna still maintain the advantage of conventional folded-slot antenna that input impedance is close to $50{\Omega}$. The antenna is designed and fabricated within the upper space of $40.5{\times}10mm^2$ on $40.5{\times}62mm^2$ substrate for 3G mobile communication frequency band. The measured impedance bandwidth and antenna gain are 390 MHz and 2 dBi respectively.
