  • Polymer concrete (PC) has been favoured over Portland cement concrete when low permeability, high adhesion, and/or high durability against aggressive environments are required. In this research, a new class of PC incorporating Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) is introduced. Four PC mixes with different MWCNTs contents were examined. MWCNTs were carefully dispersed in epoxy resin and then mixed with the hardener and aggregate to produce PC. The impact strength of the new PC was investigated by performing low-velocity impact tests. Other mechanical properties of the new PC including compressive, flexural, and shear strengths were also characterized. Moreover, microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of PC incorporating MWCNTs was performed. Impact test results showed that energy absorption of PC with 1.0 wt% MWCNTs by weight of epoxy resin was significantly improved by 36 % compared with conventional PC. Microstructural analysis demonstrated evidence that MWCNTs significantly altered the chemical structure of epoxy matrix. The changes in the microstructure lead to improvements in the impact resistance of PC, which would benefit the design of various PC structural elements.

  • TiN and TiAlN films were deposited on SKD 11 steel substrates by an arc ion plating (AIP) technique. The crystallinity and morphology for the deposited films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties of both films were investigated through the indentation, impact, and wear test. Those films fairly adherent to SKD 11 steel substrate, showed hardness values of 2300 $\pm$ 100kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 3200 $\pm$ 100kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ with a load of 25g, respectively. During impact test, TiAlN films showed much superior impact wear resistance to TiN films. It could be suggested that the TiN films was failed relatively by plastic deformation with oxidation during impact test, while TiAlN films was failed by brittle fracture and resisted the oxidation by the impact energy. The friction coefficient of TiAlN films became lower than that of TiN films at high sliding speed condition although it was higher than that of TiN films at low speed. Therefore, TiAlN films was suggested to be more advantageous than TiN films for high speed machining fields.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and the resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of cold-rolled Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates, anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates, and Al 5052 H34 alloy after cold-rolling, ballistic testing was conducted. In general, superior armor material is brittle materials which have a high hardness. Ballistic resistance of these materials was measured by protection ballistic limit(V50), a statical velocity with 50% probability for incomplete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed respectfully, resulting from V50 test and Projectile Through Plate(PTP) test at velocities greater than V50. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. V50 tests with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature were also conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface Hardness, resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates compared to those of cold-rolled Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates and anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy after cold-rolling.

  • A certain amount of MBS rubber was added to improve toughness of PVC which has a strong tendency of being brittle, producing a mixture, PVC/MBS, from which test specimens were prepared. PVC has strong chemical resistance, oil resistance, frame retardancy and high mechanical strength. Also, it is relatively inexpensive to produce, but shows weakness to impact and difficult for processing. MBS, a typical toughening agent for PVC is generally known, when added in a small amount, to improve impact resistance and to minimize difficulties during the processing of the PVC without adversely affecting the positive aspects of the PVC. In this investigation, attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic and damping constants of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. Generally, the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease while the damping capacity improves when MBS rubber was added.

  • The design of a wooden impact limiter equipped to a transportation cask for radioactive materials was optimized. According to International Atomic Energy Agency Safety Standards, 9 m drop tests should be performed on the transportation cask to evaluate its structural integrity in a hypothetical accident condition. For impact resistance, the size of the impact limiter should be properly determined for the impact limiter to absorb the impact energy and reduce the impact force. Therefore, the design parameters of the impact limiter were optimized to obtain a feasible optimal design. The design feasibility criteria were investigated, and several objectives were defined to obtain various design solutions. Furthermore, a probabilistic approach was introduced considering the uncertainties included in an engineering system. The uncertainty of material properties was assumed to be a random variable, and the probabilistic feasibility, based on the stochastic approach, was evaluated using reliability. Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the reliability to ensure a proper safety margin under the influence of uncertainties. The proposed methodology can provide a useful approach for the preliminary design of the impact limiter prior to the detailed design stage.

  • The paper provides the test results and analysis on the behavior of steel 1.7147 at different temperatures. Mechanical uniaxial tests were used to determine mechanical properties, resistance to creep and Charpy impact tests to determine impact energy. Test results are presented in the form of engineering stress-strain diagrams, creep curves as well as numerical data related to impact energy. The results show that the tensile strength has the highest value at room temperature, and the same goes for the yield strength as well as for modulus of elasticity. After room temperature both of mentioned properties decrease with temperature increasing. Some of creep curves were modeled using rheological models and analytical equation. Based on Charpy impact energy an assessment of fracture toughness was made.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify chemical resistance of polymer-cement slurry coated reinforcing bars. Polymer cement slurry coated reinforcing bars were showed the good state to the bending resistance, impact resistance, adhesive strength, but exact data of the chemical resistance do not exist. Through the experimental, it is to certify chemical resistance of polymer cement slurry coated reinforcing bars. In this study, polymer cement slurry coated reinforcing bars are prepared with two types of polymer, polymer-cement ratios of 50%, 100%, 150%, coating thickness, curing periods of 3, 7, 28days, and tested for chemical resistance as KS(Korea Standard). From the test results, chemical resistance of polymer cement slurry coated reinforcing bars used by acrylic and St/BA emulsion were showed excellent without concerned polymer-cement ratios, curing period except for 1% aqueous solution $H_2SO_4$. But polymer cement coated reinforcing bar used by acrylic emulsion is inferior to aqueous solution NaOH.

  • Stab threats using sharp edged or pointed Instruments could be easily encountered by police officers or soldiers. In this study, the shear thickening fluids (STF) was impregnated into Kevlar fabrics to improve the stab protection and the resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was experimentally investigated. The puncture and cut resistance were tested using a drop test machine withspike and knife indenters fabricated based on the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard. The STF was filled with spherical $SiO_2$ particles having an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm. The effect of particle size on puncture and cut resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was also investigated. The measured impact load histories showed that STF impregnation into fabric leads to withstand higher peak loads than that of neat fabrics under spike test. The test results showed that Kevlar impregnated with STF exhibit remarkable improvements in puncture resistance while it is slightly influential on the cut resistance. Specifically, particle size is the one of the dominant factors controlling fabric resistance to puncture under spike impact test.

  • Instrumented impact tests and compression-after-impact(CAI) tests have been used to evaluate the effect of temperature on the low-velocity impact characteristics of phenolic matrix composites reinforced with various woven glass fabric. Impact characteristics and damage area in laminates are evaluated by C-scan. It is shown that the extent of damage and residual compressive strength of the laminates vary with energy level and impact test temperature. The damage area increases with increasing impact energy and temperature. All these observations indicate reduced impact damage resistance and damage tolerance of the laminates at elevated temperature.
