  • The side impact test in the Korean New Car Assessment program (KNCAP) has been conducted since 2003. The side impact test method has been contributed to the improvement of the vehicle side structure and the enhancement of the occupant protection performance for the domestic vehicles. The pole side impact test method introduced in the KNCAP in 2010 to enhance the head protection under the severe side crash environment. The pole side impact test is optional for the additional score to be added to the overall rating score. The test results of side and pole side impact test for five vehicles were introduced and compared.

  • The linear viscoelastic behavior of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymers with different rubber content has been investigated in the frame of a linear viscoelastic model, which takes into account the inter-connectivity of the dispersed rubber particles. The model developed in our previous work has been shown to properly predict the low frequency plateau for the storage modulus, which is generally observed in polymer blends containing core-shell-type impact modifiers. In the present study, further experiments have been carried out on ABS polymers with different rubber content to verify the validity of our linear viscoelastic model. It has been found that our model describes quite properly the rheological behavior of ABS polymers with different rubber content, especially at low frequencies. The experimental data confirm that our model describes the rheological properties of rubber-modified thermoplastic polymers with strong adhesion at the particle/matrix interface more accurately than the Palierne model.

  • The authors address the effectiveness of the composite brand extension In the context of international brand alliance. In composite brand extension, four combinations of 4 domestic brands and one internationally well-known brand as header and modifier brands are used as the brand names for four experimental products. The results of analyses reveal that (1) degrees of brand attribute transferability between header and composite brands, and (2) the impact of header and modifier brands on a composite brand appear to be decreasing when the distance of product categories between header and modifier brands are farther. In addition, the authors demonstrate that the fitness between constituent brands and composite brands tends to have more influences on consumers' evaluation of a composite brand than does the complementarity when the distance of product categories between header and modifier brands are farther. Some implications and future research directions are also discussed.

  • A unique crystallization behavior of poly(L-lactide)(PLLA)/poly(D-lactide)(PDLA) stereocomplex(SC) was observed when a PLLA/PDLA blend was subjected to the specific melting conditions. Therefore, we tried to blend PLLA and PDLA at overall composition to form PLA stereocomplexes. Moreover, impact modifier and reinforcement materials such as talc and glass fiber added to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties such as impact strength and heat distortion temperature(HDT). As a result, we got one representative result, one composite recipe with HDT $115^{\circ}C$. For more economic technology, we tried to blend PLLA and Polypropylene at overall composition and we got another representative result which could be applied to current PP/talc composites and ABS materials. The core technology of this might be the well dispersion of glass fibers into the matrix resin such as PP, PLLA and impact strength modifier.

  • Poly-butylene-terephalate(PBT) can be impact modified by blending with ABS material. The effects of the type of compatibilizer and ABS content on the mechanical properties of PBT/ABS blend were examined in this study. EVA-g-GMA and three type of polycarbonates were used as the compatibilizer. As the GMA content in EVA-g-GMA was increased, the tensile strength of PBT/ABS blend increased and the impact strength of it decreased. With increasing the EVA-g-GMA content in PBT/ABS blend, the tensile strength and impact strength decreased. With PC compatibilizer, the tensile strength of PBT/ABS blend decreased as the ABS content increased. However, the maximum impact strength was observed in 20~30% ABS content range.

  • The effect of organic processing parameters on the dispersion stability of the BaTiO$_3$-based dielectric particles and borosilicate glass particulate suspensions was investigated in a system where organic solvents, dispersant, binder and modifier were used as processing additives in a low temperature cofired ceramic fabrication processes. Two- and three-component organic solvents were used to disperse ceramic particles and it was found the better stability in the particulate suspension prepared in a bi-solvent, which was consists of toluene and ethanol in a non-azeotropic composition. The addition amount of organic additives had a great impact on dispersion in the present investigation. The flow curves of the suspensions prepared with binder and modifier were fitted according to the power-law equation, which indicates that the internal structure of the suspension could be disturbed under the applied shear stress. Finally, the LTCC green tapes were successfully tape-cast based upon the optimum formulation of LTCC suspension and its microstructure was compared with that of the hard-agglomerates.

  • As a toughness modifier for plastics chlorosulfonated polyethylene(CSM) can be used. CSM has a good resistance to oxygen and ozone. CSM has a crosslinkable functional group(sulfonyl chorid) with sulfur and metal oxide. Polyvinylchloride(PVC) is widely used industrial plastics because of its balanced properties and low cost. But it has some disadvantages such as low impact strength, light, ozone and oxygen degradation. In order to improve these properties of PVC, CSM was blended with PVC. The toughening effect appeared at about 10wt% and there is no additional effect above 30wt% of CSM. The weatherability, ozone resistance and mechanical properties of PVC were improved by blending with CSM. The toughening mechanism is studied by SEM.

  • The effects of strontium content as modifier on microstructure and mechanical properties were studied in Al-10%Si-0.3%Mg cast alloys. There were not big differences in the form of eutectic Si particle and its morphology depending on adding amount of strontium, but the alloy modified by 0.012%Sr had shown the higher values than the alloy modified 0.038%Sr in strength, elongation and impact value.

  • The effects of fillers [talc, calcium carbonate, glass fiber, and EBR (ethylene-butene rubber)] on the shrinkage and mechanical properties of injection-molded polypropylene composites were investigated. The shrinkage correlated with the shape of the filler particles: at the same amount added, glass fibers with a large aspect ratio had the greatest effect on the shrinkage of polypropylene composites, followed by flake-shaped talc and granular calcium carbonate. It was confirmed that the addition of EBR rubber as an impact strength modifier reduced shrinkage proportionally to the added content. In addition, the addition of glass fiber resulted in the greatest increases in tensile and flexural strengths.
