  • Alternative way of shaping fibers suitable for papermaking was introduced. Impact refining, which was done simply by hitting wet fibers with a metal weight vertically, was intended to keep the fibers from shortening and to cause mostly internal fibrillation. Virgin chemical pulp, its recycled one and OCC were used in the experiment. It was noticed from the experiment that impact refining on virgin chemical pulp kept the fiber length and increased bonding properties greatly. However, in the recycled fibers from the chemical pulp, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased. In OCC, which seems to contain fractions of semi-chemical pulp and mechanical pulp (GP), and which is recycled pulp from corrugated boxes, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased disastrously. We believe recycled cellulosic fibers (recycled chemical pulp and OCC in this case), which went through hornification, were less resistant to the mechanical impact than virgin chemical pulp. For virgin chemical pulp, impact refining allowed no significant fiber length shortening, high WRV, and high mechanical strength.

  • This paper presents an experimental study exploring impact resistant properties of Kagome truss reinforced composite panels. Three types of panels with different materials and reinforcements, i.e., ultra-high-performance mortar, steel fiber, and Kagome truss, were designed and manufactured. High-velocity projectile impact tests were performed to investigate the impact response of panels with dimensions of 200 mm×200 mm×40 mm. The projectile used in the testing was a steel slug with a hemispherical front; the impact energy was 1 557 J. Test results showed that the Kagome truss reinforcement was effective at improving the impact resistance of panels in terms of failure patterns, damaged area, and mass loss. Synergy effects of a combination of Kagome truss and fiber reinforcements for the improvement of impact resistance capacity of ultra-high-performance mortar were also observed.

  • Carbon fiber/epoxy composites are typical brittle materials and have low impact properties. Recently, it is important to investigate impact characteristics of carbon fiber composites because of increasing use as automobile parts and high pressure hydrogen vessels of fuel cell electric vehicles for light weight. In this study, the low velocity impact properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites fabricated by a filament winding method are studied. The low velocity impact properties were measured by performing tests according to ASTM D7136. The low velocity impact simulations were carried out using commercial structural analysis software, Abaqus. The absorbed energy and the delamination shapes were compared between the experimental and simulation results. The numerical analysis method showed that the absorbed energy decreased with the reduced number of cohesive elements in the composite models.

  • This paper has an aim to study the effect of PWHT(for 140min. at $600^{\circ}C$) on FCAW weld metal properties (tensile, charpy impact and CTOD value) of YS 460 MPa steels for ship and offshore structures. On the basis of these study, it was found that strength was decreased and elongation was increased by PWHT. These phenomenon resulted from the reduction of acicula ferrite volume fraction by grain growth. Also, Charpy impact and CTOD value were decreased by PWHT. These phenomenon resulted from grain growth. Because the grain boundary grown by PWHT can play a role as crack initiation site and make the crack propagate more easily. Although weld metal properties were decreased by PWHT, tensile and impact properties could meet the class societies requirements for welds of YS 460 MPa steel, but decrease of fracture toughness need to be consider seriously.

  • In this study, it evaluate the strain properties of fiber reinforced concrete and fiber reinforced cement composite. The types of fiber are Hooked steel fiber and it was mixed 0.5, 1.0 vol.% in concrete and 1.0, 2.0 vol.% in cement composites. The impact test was conducted by using a projectile (diameter: 25mm, velocity: 170m/s) and strain properties on the rear side of each specimen was evaluated by strain gage. After the impact test, fracture grade, fracture depth was evaluated.

  • Current research and development of high performance concrete, together with study of phenomena that are pertinent to impact resistance, have lead to a new generation of barriers with improved properties to resist impact loads. The paper reviews major properties and mechanisms that affect impact resistance of concrete barriers as per criteria that characterize the resistance. These criteria are the perforation limit, penetration depth and the amount of front and rear face damage. From the long-known, single strength parameter that used to represent the barriers' impact resistance, more of the concrete mix ingredients are now considered to be effective in determining it. It is shown that the size and hardness of the aggregates, use of steel fibers and micro-silica have different effects on performance under impact and on the resistance. Additional pertinent phenomena, such as the rate and size effects, confinement and local versus global response, are pointed out with their reference to possible future developments in the design of impact resisting concrete barriers.

  • The morphology and impact strength of alloys of high density polyethylene(HDPE) and nylon-6(PA) with modified $ethylene-{\alpha}-olefin$ copolymer(OCP) as compatibilizer and impact modifier were measured by the scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the notched Izod impact test(and the high rate impact test), respectively. HDPE is incompatible with PA and specimens obtained from simple mechanical mixing show the inferior properties. However, it was indicated that OCP played roles of not only impact modifier but also compatibilizer. High rate impact test results were different from those of the notched Izod impact test, but in both tests OCP was effective for HDPE/PA blends. From SEM observation, the size of the dispersed phase in alloys prepared with OCP is much smaller than that of alloys without OCP and the interfacial adhesion of alloys prepared with OCP is also better. Toughening mechanism of polymer blends was discussed by combining the morphology analysis with mechanical and thermal properties.

  • The effects of quenching and tempering temperatures on the tensile, impact and corrosion properties of A487 alloy cast with different C contents of 0.16, 0.19 to 0.23 wt.% were examined. The impact tests were conducted at $25^{\circ}C$ and $-60^{\circ}C$ and the immersion test was performed using 3.5% NaCl solution for 14 days. The quenching temperature affected the mechanical properties of A487 alloy cast, while the magnitude of change varied depending on the C content. The increase in tempering temperature showed the typical trend of decreasing tensile strength and increasing impact properties. The change in quenching and tempering temperature in this study did not affect the corrosion properties of A487 alloy significantly. The change in mechanical and corrosion properties of A487 with different C contents was discussed based on the microstructural and fractographic observation.

  • Recycling systems are usually designed with pulp quality targets based on cleanliness, or similar property. Achieving other specific fibre properties is rarely a goal of a recycling system, but fibre properties can be modified to suit specific end uses. Recycling line equipment choices impact n fibre properties, but these effects choices impact on fibre properties, but these effects tend to be less well documented than the effects on cleanliness or brightness.
