Mesenchymal stem cells are classified as multipotent stem cells, due to their capability to transdifferentiate into various lineages that develop from mesoderm. Their popular appeal as cell-based therapy was initially based on the idea of their ability to restore tissue because of their differentiation potential in vitro; however, the lack of evidence of their differentiation to target cells in vivo led researchers to focus on their secreted trophic factors and their role as potential powerhouses on regulation of factors under different immunological environments and recover homeostasis. To date there are more than 800 clinical trials on humans related to MSCs as therapy, not to mention that in animals is actively being applied as therapeutic resource, though it has not been officially approved as one. But just as how results from clinical trials are important, so is to reveal the biological mechanisms involved on how these cells exert their healing properties to further enhance the application of MSCs on potential patients. In this review, we describe characteristics of MSCs, evaluate their benefits as tissue regenerative therapy and combination therapy, as well as their immunological properties, activation of MSCs that dictate their secreted factors, interactions with other immune cells, such as T cells and possible mechanisms and pathways involved in these interactions.

Background: It is known that some analgesics as well as pain can affect the immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic effect and immunomodulation of pregabalin (PGB) in a mouse incisional pain model. Methods: A postoperative pain model was induced by hind paw plantar incision in male BALB/c mice. Mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8): a saline-treated incision (incision), PGB-treated incision (PGB-incision), sham controls without incision or drug treatment (control), and a PGB-treated control (PGB-control). In the PGB treated groups, PGB was administered intraperitoneally (IP) 30 minutes before and 1 hour after the plantar incision. Changes of the mechanical nociceptive thresholds following incision were investigated. Mice were euthanized for spleen harvesting 12 hours after the plantar incision, and natural killer (NK) cytotoxicity to YAC 1 cells and lymphocyte proliferation responses to phytohemagglutinin were compared among these four groups. Results: Mechanical nociceptive thresholds were decreased after plantar incision and IP PGB administration recovered these decreased mechanical nociceptive thresholds (P < 0.001). NK activity was increased by foot incision, but NK activity in the PGB-incision group was significantly lower than that in the Incision group (P < 0.001). Incisional pain increased splenic lymphocyte proliferation, but PGB did not alter this response. Conclusions: Incisional pain alters cell immunity of the spleen in BALB/c mice. PGB showed antinocieptive effect on mouse incisional pain and attenuates the activation of NK cells in this painful condition. These results suggest that PGB treatment prevents increases in pain induced NK cell activity.
We had found that orally administered Lactobacillus species were effective immune modulators in ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice. To validate these findings, we investigated the effects of orally administered Lactobacillus brevis HY7401 in OVA-T cell receptor transgenic mice. This strain showed a tendency to induce Th1 cytokines and inhibit Th2 cytokines. All assayed isotypes of OVA-specific antibody were effectively reduced. Systemic anaphylaxis was also relatively reduced with the probiotic administration. These results reveal that L. brevis HY7401 might be useful to promote anti-allergic processes through oral administration.
The present work was designed to investigate the effects of barzilin on ConAinducedd TCGF release, responsiveness to standardd IL-2, and mitogens-induced proliferation of splenocyte when administered intraperitoneally to 8 week-old C57BL/6 mice for 2 consecutive days. Immunological tests were performed 72 hours after the treatment of brailin. The administration of 50 mg/kg brazilin caused a noticeable increase in TCGF release and responsiveness to standard II-2 but inhibited mitogens-induced proliferation of splenocyte. These results that brazilin is able to modular immunological functions despite of its inhibitory effect on mitogen induced cell proliferation.
This work was performed to investigate the effects of brazilin in vitro on mitrogen-induced proliferation, ConA-induced TCGF release and responsiveness to recombinant-induced proliferation, ConA-induced TCGF release and responsiveness to recombinant IL-2 using splenocytes from C57BL/6 female mice. Brazilin (29-80 ng/ml) caused a noticeable increase in TCGF production of splenocytes, but did not affect responsivness to recombinant IL-2, the expression of ConA-induced high affinity IL-2 receptor and mitogen-induced proliferation of splenocytes.
Objectives : The aim of this study is to understand neuroprotection therapy of glaucoma with both Korean and western medicine. Methods : We searched Pubmed on the title "glaucoma" and "neuroprotection" and also searched CNKI(China National Knowledge Infrastructure) and OASIS(Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System) on the title "glaucoma".Results : The results are as follows. 1. In western medicine, excitotoxicity inhibition, immunomodulation, oxidative stress suppression, supplement of NTFs and stem cell therapy are studied with neuroprotection therapy of glaucoma. 2. Treatment of glaucoma in TCM and Korean medicine are associated with liver(肝) and kidney(腎).Conclusions : Korean medical approaches on neuroprotection therapy of glaucoma can be significant, and further studies are needed to research.
Aloe vera L.(Aloe barbadensis Miller) has been used for many centuries for various medical, cosmetic and neutraceutical purposes. The gel of A. vera was reported to exert numerous biological activities including wound healing, immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, and anti-psoriasis activities. Acemannan, found predominantly in the inner leaf gel of A. vera, has been identified as the main active ingredient exerting diverse biological activities. In this review, we summarized the recent findings on the immunomodulatory activities of acemannan. Studies that used purified acemannan demonstrate that acemannan exerts immune-stimulating, anti-cancer, anti-viral, and hematopoiesis-increasing activities. In addition, it is being clear that most of these activities of acemannan are mediated primarily by activating professional antigen presenting cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells.
Biotechnology will play critical role in improving animal productivity. Animal growth rate and muscle deposition potential can be greatly improved by the application of biotechnology and biotechnological products. Administration of recombinant somatotropin (ST) or other compounds such as IGF-1 and growth hormone-releasing peptides (GHRPs) can enhance growth rate and carcass lean percentage. Gene transfer offers a powerful approach to manipulate endocrine system and metabolic pathways toward faster growth and better feed efficiency. Biotechnology is also extensively used for improving metabolism and activity of gut microorganisms for better nutrient digestibility. Knockout of growth-inhibiting genes such as myostatin results in considerable acceleration of body weight and muscle growth. Animal growth can also be improved by the use of gene therapy. Immunomodulation is another approach for efficient growth through controlling the activity of endogenous anabolic hormones. All the above aspects will be discussed in this review.

Proinflamamtory mediators such as prostaglandins (PGs), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are known to be key mediators in pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. Capsaicin, the major ingredient of hot pepper, is considered to elicit anti-inflammatory property. In this study, the effect of capsaicin on the prostaglandin E$_2$(PGE$_2$) production was investigated in murine peritoneal macrophages.(omitted)
