It has been unclear whether the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella can overwinter in Korean field conditions. This study determined overwintering conditions of P. xylostella by conducting field exposure tests based on its cold tolerance and monitoring overwintering populations by direct examination of overwintering larval habitats and capturing adults with sex pheromone traps. In addition, the overwintering populations were analyzed using polymorphic genetic markers to trace their sources. When all immature stages of P. xylostella were exposed to $-5^{\circ}C$, which was the temperature much above their supercooling points, they significantly suffered with direct cold injuries, where larval stage was most tolerant to the cold injury. However, the exposure to $5^{\circ}C$ for a long period (4 weeks) did not give any significant cold injury to nonfeeding stages, while this treatment gave lethality to larval stage without diet. When all developmental stages of P. xylostella were exposed to open field conditions during winter, they exhibited significant decreases of survival rates. However, some protected and indoor conditions reduced the cold injuries and the diet provision significantly increased larval survival rates. Adult monitoring with sex pheromone during winter period indicated that the first captures were observed at similar periods at different locations (${\approx}260$ Km apart). The overwintering adults were captured until early April. Genetic variation of these overwintering populations was analyzed with polymorphic molecular markers, indicating significant genetic divergences among the overwintering populations. This study indicates that P. xylostella can overwinter in southern Korean fields or some protected greenhouses with host plants.
Production of a mature oocyte is a complex process that requires the close association between oocyte and follicular cells. The present study was conducted to investigate the difference between oocytes with and without close junctional communication with cumulus cells and the involvement of two connexins(CXs) in the interactions. Follicles at different sizes(small: 200~400 ㎛; large:>450 ㎛) were mechanically isolated from PMSG-primed mouse ovaries, and punctured to get cumulus-oocyte complex(COC). Oocytes were released themselves(denuded), with partially attached(partial), or with tightly attached(intact) cumulus cells. Maturation and fertilization capacity of the COCs were measured. Expression of CX 37 and CX 43 was examined by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization. The ratio between intact COC and denude/partial oocytes was 30%(SI) and 70%(SPD) in small follicles, while 55%(LI) and 45%(LPD) in large follicles, respectively. Maturation and fertilization rates of the released oocytes were similar among SI, LPD, LI groups, but those were significantly lower in SPD oocytes. In oocytes, CX 37 was the major CX and CX 43 was not expressed, whereas in the cumulus cells, CX 43 was the major, and CX 37 was the next. Results of the present study suggest that 1) immature oocytes from small follicles with intact cell-to-cell communication with cumulus have the similar quality to that of the oocytes from larger follicles, 2) gap junction between oocyte and cumulus cells may be the heterotypic channel, and 3) we could not explain the difference in the cell-to-cell communication between intact and partial/denuded COCs through the expression of the two CXs.
Vitellogenin(Vg) is a sex specific serum protein present in sexually maturing female blood of oviparous vertebrates. Estrogen($E_2$) is a main inducer of hepatic Vg synthesis. We investigated the effects of androgen and growth hormone(GH) on regulation of Vg and estrogen receptor(ER) genes in Japanese eel. Immature eels($200{\sim}250\;g$) were given a single injection of $E_2(5{\sim}5,000\;{\mu}g/kg\;bw)$ alone, or in combination with eel recombinant GH(eGH, $1{\sim}10\;{\mu}g/kg$) or methyltestosterone(MT, $1{\sim}5\;mg/kg$) and sacrificed 10 days after the hormone treatments. Expression levels of ER and Vg genes from the liver were determined by means of reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). Administration of $E_2$ stimulated Vg gene expression in a dose dependent manner. Levels of Vg mRNA after the injection of $E_2(500\;{\mu}g/kg)$ with MT(5mg/kg) or eGH($10\;{\mu}g/kg$) were much higher than in that of $E_2$ alone($500\;{\mu}g/kg$). Whereas, injection of either vehicle, eGH ($10\;{\mu}g/kg$) or MT(5mg/kg) alone did not induce the expression of Vg gene in the liver. ER mRNA was detected from the fish treated with vehicle alone. $E_2$ injection($5{\sim}500\;{\mu}g/kg\;bw$) increased this ER expression but dose dependent response was not clear. Addition of MT(5mg/kg) or eGH($10\;{\mu}g/kg$) did not affect $E_2-stimulated$ ER mRNA expression. This study confirms the necessity of $E_2$ as the primary factor for Vg gene expression and requirement of additional hormones such as MT or GH for the full expression of Vg mRNA, and suggests that the additive effect of MT or GH on Vg gene expression would be mediated by some unknown factors other than ER.
Carnivorous plants vary in their unique features of morphology, ultrastructure and biochemical properties by species. Furthermore, prey-capturing mechanism as well as structural and physiological adaptations have been used for grouping various carnivorous species. In Drosera plants, glandular trichomes, which develop in the leaf epidermis, are known to play the most important role during the prey capturing process. The present study examined such trichomes, focusing on the glandular type, in leaves of Drosera anglica using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Three types of rudimentary glandular trichomes were found to develop within the folded leaf primordia and immature leaf during early development. The first type, stalked glandular trichomes (Type I), occurred on the margin and upper epidermis of the leaf. With maturation, the longest glandular trichomes having lengthy stalks, ca. $2.2{\sim}5.1\;mm$, developed along the margin, while shorter stalked trichomes, ca. up to $200\;{\mu}m$, were found on the inner leaf blade. The shorter ones consisted of a globose head having two layers of secretory cells, parenchyma bell cells and tracheids and a multicellular stalk. The stalks gradually decreased in length in centripetal fashion. The second type, Type II, having ca. $15{\sim}30\;{\mu}m$ short stalks, also developed along the inner blade. Both types secreted mucilage from the secretory cells which had a thin cell wall and cuticle layer. The sessile six-celled glandular trichomes were the third type, Type III, and were $25{\sim}40\;{\mu}m$ in length. They were distributed most commonly throughout the upper and lower epidermis, petiole and even on the stalk surfaces of the first two types of trichomes. The third type was also found to be involved in the active secretion. In prey capturing leaves, all trichome types secreted substances through thin cuticles in the head cell wall, which exhibited relatively loose wall components.

This study investigated the diel and tidal distributions of the two mysids, Archaeomysis kokuboi and Acanthomysis nakazatoi, in relation to their growth stages in the sandy surf zone of Yongil Bay, located on the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula. Sampling was conducted with a sledge net at every two hours for almost 24 hours at three sites: water edge, water surface and sand bottom both in 1-m deep water areas. The abundance of Archaeomysis kokuboi juveniles was too low to count both in day and night samples. While there was no difference in immature A. kokuboi abundance between day and night in the bottom or water edge, that at the water surface was significantly higher at night than daytime. The abundance of A. kokuboi adults, especially of males, in the bottom was significantly higher in daytime than night and no individuals appeared to the water surface either day or night. In comparison, the abundance of Acanthomysis nakazatoi juveniles between day and night did not differ significantly at all the three sites, with the highest number being distributed in the bottom. The abundance of immatures between day and night also did not differ significantly and no individuals appeared to the water surface either day or night. The abundance of A. nakazatoi adults, especially females, in the bottom was significantly higher at night than daytime and there was no significant difference in abundance between day and night in the other sites. There was also no significant difference in abundances of the two species between ebb and flood tides, except for A. kokuboi immatures which appeared significantly more during the ebb tides at the water surface. Overall, the distribution of the two sympatric species, A. kokuboi and A. nakazatoi, was not the same in the sandy surf zone. Its difference seems to depend on their stages of growth, and the change in their abundance may be influenced more by diurnal rhythms than tidal effects. The population density of A. nakazatoi in the sandy surf zone was much higher than that of A. kokuboi, and relatively higher densities in all growth stages of the former were found in the sandy bottom ranging from juveniles to adults. These results indicate that A. nakazatoi has exceedingly better ability of sand burrowing even from the juvenile stage, and thus is an ecologically better adapted species in the sandy surf zone than another sympatric species, A. kokuboi.
Purpose: Hypernatremia most frequently occurs in the immature newborn and be severe in association with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). This study examined the frequency, onset and risk factors of hypernatremia, and the relationship between hypernatremia and IVH in very low birth weight (VLBW; <1,250 g) infants. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 55 VLBW infants admitted between January 2006 and December 2009 to the neonatal intensive care unit of Wonkwang University Hospital and who survived over 7 days. Serum sodium concentration, sodium intake, fluid and weight loss, as suggested risk factors of hypernatremia, and the incidence of IVH were evaluated. The infants were divided into a hypernatremia group (${\geq}$150 mEq/L) and nonhypernatremia group, and were compared. Results: Incidence of hypernatremia in the VLBW infants was 52.7%, and mean starting time of hypernatremia was 2.8${\pm}$1.3 days. There were no differences in the sodium and fluid intake between the two groups. Weight loss at day 3 after birth was significantly higher in the hypernatremia compared to the nonhypernatremia group (P<0.05); thereafter weight loss was non-significantly higher. The incidence of IVH in VLBW infants was 38.2%, and the difference between the two groups was not significant. Conclusion: Hypernatremia occurs commonly in VLBW infants and is most commonly caused by weight loss in the early days after birth. Incidence of IVH is not likely influenced by hypernatremia with marginally elevated sodium concentration.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical and radiologic outcomes of transphyseal anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in patients with open physes who were selected with authors' new operative indications. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 15 patients with open physes who underwent a transtibial ACL reconstruction and were followed up for 4~6 years after surgery. Our operative indications involved 1) choronologic age of ${\geq}$ 16 in male and ${\geq}$ 14 in female, 2) open physes of ${\leq}$ 2 mm width, and 3) Risser sign and Tanner stage of ${\geq}$ 3. Tibialis anterior tendon allograft was used in all patients, and endobutton and bioscrew were used for femoral and tibial fixations, respectively. Functional outcomes were evaluated using Lysholm Knee Scoring scale, Tegner activity scale, and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) 2000 subjective score. Physical examinations to evaluate stability involved Lachman and pivot shift tests. For radiographic results, we evaluated side to side differences of anterior displacement in stress views. In addition, with use of scannograms taken at last follow-up, we examined side to side differences of femorotibial angles, anatomical and mechanical lateral distal femoral angles, mechanical medial proximal tibial angles and leg lengths. Results: The mean Lysholm Knee score was 51(40-61) points preoperatively and 97(94-100) points at last follow up. The mean Tegner activity score was 2.6 points preoperatively and 7.1 points at last follow up. The mean IKDC score was 32.6 points preoperatively and 88.3 points at last follow up. The mean anterior displacement of the tibia was improved from 6.7(${\pm}1.0$) mm to 1.9(${\pm}0.9$) mm. There were no leg length discrepancies over 5 mm and no statistically significant differences in all the radiographic variables representing growth disturbance. Conclusion: This study suggests that patients with open physes who selected by authors' new indication would safely undergo transphyseal ACL reconstruction with successful outcomes.

Purpose : Inflammation plays a major role in the pathogenesis of RDS and BPD in the immature lung. We investigated the possible role of IL-10 and IL-12 in the cord blood of preterm newborns with RDS or BPD. Methods : Forty preterm newborns whose mothers received antenatal care at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital between January 2003 to June 2005, and agreed to testing their cord blood samples were enrolled. The gestational ages were below 34 weeks. Cord blood level of IL-10 and IL-12 were determined by ELISA. We separated the patients into 2 groups (RDS group and non-RDS group, BPD group and non-BPD group) and compared the cytokine levels and clinical records of the groups. Results : Cord blood IL-10 level showed a significant inverse correlation with gestational age and birth weight (P=0.001, P=0.005). Preterm infants with RDS showed higher IL-10 level (1.0 vs 0.1 pg/mL; P=0.001) in the cord blood than those without RDS. The differences remained statistically significant after correction for the effect of gestational age between both preterm groups. Despite similar cord blood IL-10 levels, preterm infants with BPD showed no significant difference with those without BPD. Conclusion : Cord blood IL-10 levels are increased in preterm infants which may be due to the immuno-suppression occurring during pregnancy and to fetal immaturity because these levels are inversely correlated with the gestational age. So, Cord blood IL-10 level can be used as the predictor of RDS.
Abscisic acid (ABA) content of the seed and endocarp during stratification were analyzed and then examined in relation to the embryo growth and germination. In mature red fruitlet, the ABA content was remarkably higher in sarcocarp than those in both seed ans endocarp. During the stratification before dehiscence, ABA content was gradually decreased in both seed and endocarp. After 90 days(dehiscent percentage; 96%) it came to 90 pmol/ g DW(69% decrease) and to 41 pmol/ g DW (80% decrease) in seed and in endocarp, respectively. The ratio of free from to total ABA content showed constant decrease in seed, but remained at higher level in endocap than in seed. Correlation between the decrease of ABA content and embryo growth showed higher significance in seed than in endocarp. During the stratification after dehiscence, ABA content in seed was gradually decreased at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$, After 90 days it came to 28 pmol/ g DW (69% decrease) and to 46 pmol/ g DW (49% decrease) at 4$^{\circ}C$ and at 15$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The ratio of free form to total ABA content was gradually increased at 4$^{\circ}C$, but remained almost constant at 15$^{\circ}C$. Correlation between the decrease of ABA content and days to first germination showed positive singificance only at 4$^{\circ}C$, whereas the correlation between the decrease and mean germination percentage per day showed negative significance at 4$^{\circ}C$, but positive significance at 15$^{\circ}C$. The above results indicate the ABA of the seed end endocarp during the stratification before dehiscence seems to be concerned with the immature embryo growth, but that of the seed during the stratification after dehiscence seems to show little effect on the germination capability(degree of breaking physiological dormancy).
Mamoru Hosoda's (2015) depicts the adventure with which a physically and psychologically isolated boy is growing through a 'Relationship' with surrounding beings. This paper intends to reveal the essence of 'Relationships' and 'True Growth' that the director presents to us. In the film, a boy's adventure is centered on two worlds (the human world and the beast world). Here, the human world refers to a civilized society, and the beast world 'Naturalness' as the inner nature of a human being. The human world and the beast world in the mirror-relationship with the human world were originally a world, and the inside and the outside of the place for all existing things were connected in one. Human beings were never superior to the surrounding beings, but all beings were equal in relationship. The way of thinking in that age is called 'Symmetrical Thinking.' But as human beings opened the road to self-centered civilization, they eliminated 'Nature' inside themselves. As a result, the two worlds (human beings and nature, or the human world and the beast world) were eventually separated. This destroyed not only the human-nature relationship but also the human-to-human relationship, which is one of the characteristics of the civilized society where we currently live. Through the boy's question, "Who am I?", the director suggests to us that the inner nature of a human being as a natural being should be reinstated. This means that a human being restores the "relationship" with all beings (other beings) surrounding himself or herself, which is the only alternative to overcome various violences of the civilized society that we have created. The full growth of a human being is achieved at this point. In this way, offers a reflection on the human civilization and society, and questions the possibility of coexistence with other beings, through cosmic thinking (symmetrical thinking) that we have lost. In this respect, it is a text presented as a 'Model of Maturity' for an immature human society.
