  • The present study aims to develop the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) imaging system facilitating the real-time measurement of the concentration of evaporating binary mixture droplet (BMD). We introduce the theoretical background of the SPR imaging technique and its methodology for concentration measurement. The SPR imaging system established in the present study consists of a LED light source, a polarizer, a lens, and a band pass filter for the collimated light of a 589 nm wavelength, and a CCD camera. Based on the Fresnel multiple-layer reflection theory, SPR imaging can capture the change of refractive index of evaporating BMD. For example, the present study exhibits the visualization process of ethylene glycol (EG)-water (W) BMD and measures real-time concentration change. Since the water component is more volatile than the ethylene glycol component, the refractive index of EG-W BMD varies with its mixture composition during BMD evaporation. We successfully measured the ethylene glycol concentration within the evaporating BMD by using SPR imaging.

  • In liquid metal fast breeder reactors, postulated failures of the plant protection system may lead to serious unprotected accidental consequences. Unprotected transients are generically categorized as transient overpower accidents and transient under cooling accidents. In both cases, core meltdown may occur and this can lead to a molten fuel coolant interaction (MFCI). The understanding of MFCI phenomena is essential for study of debris coolability and characteristics during post-accident heat removal. Sodium is used as coolant in liquid metal fast breeder reactors. Viewing inside sodium at elevated temperature is impossible because of its opaqueness. In the present study, a methodology to depict MFCI phenomena using a flat panel detector based imaging system (i.e., real time radiography) is brought out using a woods metal-water experimental facility which simulates the $UO_2-Na$ interaction. The developed imaging system can capture attributes of the MFCI process like jet breakup length, jet front velocity, fragmented particle size, and a profile of the debris bed using digital image processing methods like image filtering, segmentation, and edge detection. This paper describes the MFCI process and developed imaging methodology to capture MFCI attributes which are directly related to the safe aspects of a sodium fast reactor.

The effects of electromagnetic waves on medical imaging systems or facilities were not much when the notification of ministry of knowledge economy is considered, but in the overall perspective considering all the equipments and facility of the medical organization, such effects were significant. It is determined that sustainable safety managements of electric field and magnetic field must be done during process from medical imaging system installation to maintenance to rule out such factors.

  • The development of synthetic pathway to produce a highly yield nanoparticles is an important aspect of industrial technology. Herein, we report a simple, rapid approach to synthesize organic-soluble Cu and Ag nanoparticles in colloidal method for the application in a conductive pattern using inkjet printing. The silver nanoparticles have been synthesized in highly concentrated organic phase. The Cu nanoparticles have been synthesized by the reducing of the copper oxide materials using acid molecules in high concentrated organic phase. Their sintering and electric conductivity properties were investigated by melting process between $200^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$ for application to printed electronics.

  • Many studies have been done on the integral imaging pickup whose objective is to get efficiently elemental images from a lens array with respect to three-dimensional (3D) objects. In the integral imaging pickup process, it is necessary to render an elemental image from each elemental lens in a lens array for 3D objects, and then to combine them into one total image. The multiple viewpoint rendering (MVR) is one of various methods for integral imaging pickup. This method, however, has the computing and rendering time problem for obtaining element images from a lot of elemental lens. In order to solve the problems, in this paper, we propose a parallel MVR (PMVR) method to generate elemental images in a parallel through distribution of elemental lenses into multiple threads simultaneously. As a result, the computation time of integral imaging using PMVR is reduced significantly rather than a sequential approach and then we showed that the PMVR is very useful.

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows non-invasive, cross-sectional optical imaging of biological tissue with high spatial resolution and acquisition speed. In principle, it is analogous to ultrasound imaging, but uses near-infrared light instead of ultrasound, measuring the time-delay of back-scattered light from within biological tissue. Compared to ultrasound imaging, it exhibits superior spatial resolution (1~10 um) and high sensitivity. Therefore, OCT has been applied to a wide range of applications such as cellular imaging, ophthalmology and cardiology. Here, we describe a novel application of OCT technology in visualizing microneedles embedded in tissue that is developed to deliver drugs into the dermis without the injection mark in the human skin. Detailed three-dimensional structural images of microneedles and biological tissues were obtained. Examining structural modification of microneedles and tissues during insertion process would enable to evaluate performance of various types of microneedles in situ.

  • We present a broad-bandwidth comb-spacing-swept source (CSWS) based on a differential polarization delay line (DPDL) for interferometric three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The comb spacing of the CSWS is repeatedly swept by the tunable DPDL in the multiwavelength source to provide depth-scanning optical coherence tomography (OCT). As the polarization differential delay of the DPDL is tuned from 5 to 15 ps, the comb spacing along the wavelength continuously varies from 1.6 to 0.53 nm, respectively. The wavelength range of various semiconductor optical amplifiers and the cavity feedback ratio of the tunable fiber coupler are experimentally selected to obtain optimal conditions for a broader 3-dB bandwidth of the multiwavelength spectrum and thus provide a higher axial resolution of $35{\mu}m$ in interferometric OCT imaging. The proposed CSWS-OCT has a simple imaging interferometer configuration without reference-path scanning and a simple imaging process without the complex Fourier transform. 3D surface images of a via-hole structure on a printed circuit board and the top surface of a coin were acquired.

  • Water-uptake through roots, is an essential process of the water flow in plants. Its visualization is very useful for understanding sap flow dynamics at whole plant level. In this study, the tips of Arabidopsis' root hairs were excised and exposed to repeated dehydration and rehydration processes. The water-refilling through individual xylem vessels was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The high temporal resolution ($2\;{\mu}m$) and beam intensity of the X-ray source allowed to acquisition of consecutive X-ray images of the water-refilling process up to 10 frames/sec. Various flow patterns were observed and the ascending speed of the water-air interfaces was analyzed. The relation between the water-rising height and ascending speed was also analyzed. The present results would provide better alternative for investigating sap flows in roots.

  • In this paper, we introduce the architecture of Genetic Algorithm(GA) based Feed-forward Polynomial Neural Networks(PNNs) and discuss a comprehensive design methodology. A conventional PNN consists of Polynomial Neurons, or nodes, located in several layers through a network growth process. In order to generate structurally optimized PNNs, a GA-based design procedure for each layer of the PNN leads to the selection of preferred nodes(PNs) with optimal parameters available within the PNN. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based PNN, experiments are done on a model by applying Medical Imaging System(MIS) data to a multi-variable software process. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed GA-based PNN is modeled with higher accuracy and more superb predictive capability than previously presented intelligent models.
