  • This paper presents a method for line segment extraction for 3-d building reconstruction. Building roofs are described as a set of planar polygonal patches, each of which is extracted by watershed-based image segmentation, line segment matching and coplanar grouping. Coplanar grouping and polygonal patch formation are performed per region by selecting 3-d line segments that are matched using epipolar geometry and flight information. The algorithm has been applied to high resolution aerial images and the results show accurate 3-d building reconstruction.

  • The denoising and reconstruction of color images are increasingly studied in the field of computer vision and image processing. Especially, the denoising and reconstruction of color face images are more difficult than those of natural images because of the structural characteristics of human faces as well as the subtleties of color interactions. In this paper, we propose a denoising method based on PCA reconstruction for removing complex color noises on human faces, which is not easy to remove by using vectorial color filters. The proposed method is composed of the following five steps; training of canonical eigenface space using PCA, automatic extracting of face features using active appearance model, relighing of reconstructed color image using bilateral filter, extraction of noise regions using the variance of training data, and reconstruction using partial information of input images (except the noise regions) and blending of the reconstructed image with the original image. Experimental results show that the proposed denosing method efficiently removes complex color noises on input face images.

  • This paper proposes a new reconstruction method of high-resolution facial image from a low-resolution facial image based on top-down machine learning and recursive error back-projection. A face is represented by a linear combination of prototypes of shape and that of texture. With the shape and texture information of each pixel in a given low-resolution facial image, we can estimate optimal coefficients for a linear combination of prototypes of shape and those that of texture by solving least square minimizations. Then high-resolution facial image can be obtained by using the optimal coefficients for linear combination of the high-resolution prototypes. In addition, a recursive error back-projection procedure is applied to improve the reconstruction accuracy of high-resolution facial image. The encouraging results of the proposed method show that our method can be used to improve the performance of the face recognition by applying our method to reconstruct high-resolution facial images from low-resolution images captured at a distance.

  • Underwater images often suffer from color distortion, blurring and low contrast, which is caused by the propagation of light in the underwater environment being affected by the two processes: absorption and scattering. To cope with the poor quality of underwater images, this paper proposes a multiscale fusion underwater image enhancement method based on channel attention mechanism and local binary pattern (LBP). The network consists of three modules: feature aggregation, image reconstruction and LBP enhancement. The feature aggregation module aggregates feature information at different scales of the image, and the image reconstruction module restores the output features to high-quality underwater images. The network also introduces channel attention mechanism to make the network pay more attention to the channels containing important information. The detail information is protected by real-time superposition with feature information. Experimental results demonstrate that the method in this paper produces results with correct colors and complete details, and outperforms existing methods in quantitative metrics.

  • Image-based 3D reconstruction is to restore the shape and color of real-world objects, and image sensors mounted on mobile platforms are used for positioning and mapping purposes in indoor and outdoor environments. Due to the increase in accidents in underground space, the location accuracy problem of underground spatial information has been raised. Image-based location estimation studies have been conducted with the advantage of being able to determine the 3D location and simultaneously identify internal damage from image data acquired from the inside of pipeline-type underground facilities. In this study, we studied 3D reconstruction based on the images acquired inside the pipe-type underground facility and reference data. An unmanned mobile system equipped with a stereo camera was used to acquire data and image data within a pipe-type underground facility where reference data were placed at the entrance and exit. Using the acquired image and reference data, the pipe-type underground facility is reconstructed to a geo-referenced 3D shape. The accuracy of the 3D reconstruction result was verified by location and length. It was confirmed that the location was determined with an accuracy of 20 to 60 cm and the length was estimated with an accuracy of about 20 cm. Using the image-based 3D reconstruction method, the position and line-shape of the pipe-type underground facility will be effectively updated.

  • Method for 3D reconstruction from image points and geometric clues can be roughly classified as "model-based" and "constraint-based". We present a new method to reconstruct from one image a scene using depth-point. The our method is benchmarked synthetic data and its effectiveness is shown on photograph data.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient image reconstruction method which is suited to remove various noise generated from measurement using X-ray attenuation. To be specific, we present a wavelet method to efficiently remove ring artifacts, which are caused by inevitable mechanical error in X-ray emitters and detectors. and streak artifacts, which are caused by general observation errors and Fourier transform-based reconstruction process. To remove ring artifacts related noise from projections, we suggest to estimate the noise intensity by using the fact that the noise related to ring artifacts has a strong correlation in the angle direction, and remove them by using wavelet shrinkage. We also suggest to use wavelet-vaguelette decomposition for general-purpose noise removal and image reconstruction. Through simulation studies. we show that the proposed method provides a better result in ring artifact removal and image reconstruction over the traditional Fourier transform-based methods.

  • Images reconstructed with Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithm have been observed to have checkerboard effects and have noise artifacts near edges as iterations proceed. To compensate this ill-posed nature, numerous penalized maximum-likelihood methods have been proposed. We suggest a simple algorithm of applying edge detecting process to the MLEM and Bayesian Expectation-Maximization (BEM) to reduce the noise artifacts near edges and remove checkerboard effects. We have shown by simulation that this algorithm removes checkerboard effects and improves the clarity of the reconstructed image and has good properties based on root mean square error (RMS).

  • Scattered photons cause blurring and distortions in flash radiography, reducing the accuracy of image reconstruction significantly. The effect of the scattered photons is taken into account and an iterative deduction of the scattered photons is proposed to amend the scattering effect for image restoration. In order to deduct the scattering contribution, the flux of scattered photons is estimated as the sum of two components. The single scattered component is calculated accurately together with the uncollided flux along the characteristic ray, while the multiple scattered component is evaluated using correction coefficients pre-obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The arbitrary geometry pretreatment and ray tracing are carried out based on the customization of AutoCAD. With the above model, an Iterative Procedure for image restORation code, IPOR, is developed. Numerical results demonstrate that the IPOR code is much more accurate than the direct reconstruction solution without scattering correction and it has a very high computational efficiency.
