  • This study investigates the feasibility of three algorithms, K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), Random Forest (RF) and Neural Network (NN), for estimating the air temperature of an unobserved area where the weather station is not installed. The satellite image were obtained from Landsat-8 and MODIS Aqua/Terra acquired in 2019, and the meteorological ground weather data were from AWS/ASOS data of Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Forest Service. In addition, in order to improve the estimation accuracy, a digital surface model, solar radiation, aspect and slope were used. The accuracy assessment of machine learning methods was performed by calculating the statistics of R2 (determination coefficient) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) through 10-fold cross-validation and the estimated values were compared for each target area. As a result, the neural network algorithm showed the most stable result among the three algorithms with R2 = 0.805 and RMSE = 0.508. The neural network algorithm was applied to each data set on Landsat imagery scene. It was possible to generate an mean air temperature map from June to September 2019 and confirmed that detailed air temperature information could be estimated. The result is expected to be utilized for national disaster safety management such as heat wave response policies and heat island mitigation research.

  • Video compression based on DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) has weakpoints of blocking artifacts and pixel loss when the resolution is changed. DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) based method can overcome such problems. In SAMCoW (Scalable Adaptive Motion Compensation Wavelet), one of wavelet based video coding algorithm, both intra frames and motion compensated error frames are encoded using EZW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) algorithm. However the property of wavelets transform coefficients of motion compensated error frames are different from that of still images. Signal energy is not highly concentrated in the lower bands which is true for most still image cases. Signal energy is rather evenly distributed over all frequency bands. This paper suggests a new video coding algorithm utilizing these properties. Spatial band coding which is known to be very effective for encoding images with relative1y high frequency components and not utilizing the interband coefficients correlation is applied instead of EZW to encode both intra and inter frames. In spatial band coding, the position and value of significant wavelet coefficients in each band are progressively transmitted. Unlike EZW, inter band coefficients correlations are not utilized in spatial band coding. It has been shown that spatial band coding gives better performance than EZW when applied to wavelet based video compression.

  • The face shape extracted by the depth values has different appearance as the most important facial feature information and the face images decomposed into frequency subband are signified personal features in detail. In this paper, we develop a method for recognizing the range face images by combining the multiple frequency domains for each depth image and depth fusion using fuzzy integral. For the proposed approach, the first step tries to find the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face from the extracted face area. It is used as the reference point to normalize for orientated facial pose and extract multiple areas by the depth threshold values. In the second step, we adopt as features for the authentication problem the wavelet coefficient extracted from some wavelet subband to use feature information. The third step of approach concerns the application of eigenface and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) method to reduce the dimension and classify. In the last step, the aggregation of the individual classifiers using the fuzzy integral is explained for extracted coefficient at each resolution level. In the experimental results, using the depth threshold value 60 (DT60) show the highest recognition rate among the regions, and the depth fusion method achieves 98.6% recognition rate, incase of fuzzy integral.

  • In the face of growing concern about global warming, increasing attention has been focused on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. One method to mitigating the release of carbon dioxide is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). CCS includes separation of carbon dioxide from industrial emission in plants, transport to a storage site, and long-term isolation in underground. It is necessary to conduct analyses on optimal site selection, surface monitoring, and additional effects by the construction of CCS facility in Gyeongsang basin, Korea. For the optimal site selection, necessary data; geological map, landcover map, digital elevation model, and slope map, were prepared, and a weighted overlay analysis was performed. Then, surface monitoring was performed using high resolution satellite image. As a result, the candidate region was selected inside Gyeongnam for carbon storage. Finally, the related regulations about CCS facility were collected and analyzed for legal question of selected site.

  • Recently, many studies have been conducted on the changing phenology on the Korean Peninsula due to global warming. However, because of the geographical characteristics, research on plant season in autumn, which is difficult to measure compared to spring season, is insufficient. In this study, all leaves that maple and fallen leaves were defined as 'Decay leaves' and decay leaf detection was performed based on the Landsat-8 satellite image. The first threshold value of decay leaves was calculated by using NDVI and the secondary threshold value of decay leaves was calculated using by NDWI and the difference of spectral characteristics with green leaves. POD, FAR values were used to verify accuracy of the dry leaf detection algorithm in this study, and the results showed high accuracy with POD of 98.619 and FAR of 1.203.

  • Recent advanced UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology supply new opportunities for estimating crop condition using high resolution imagery. We analyzed the diurnal change of reflectance and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in UAV imagery for crop monitoring in clear day condition. Multi-spectral images were obtained from a 5-band multi-spectral camera mounted on rotary wing UAV. Reflectance were derived by the direct method using down-welling irradiance measurement. Reflectance using UAV imagery on calibration tarp, concrete and crop experimental sites did not show stable by time and daily reproducible values. But the CV (Coefficient of Variation) of diurnal NDVI on crop experimental sites was less than 5%. As a result of comparing NDVI at the similar time for two day, the daily mean average ratio of error showed a difference of 0.62 to 3.97%. Therefore, it is considered that NDVI using UAV imagery can be used for time series crop monitoring.

  • The application of remote sensing in small scale mapping has recently been widened to various fields such as information analysis of landuse, environmental conservation and natural resources. SPOT imagery, in particular, offers data which can be processed for 3-dimensional point determination. This is made possible by its high resolution, appropriate swatch width/altitude ratio and stereo imaging capabilities. This study aims to develop a suitable polymonial and an algorithm in the determination of exterior orientation which is essential in the 3-dimensional point determination of SPOT imgery. An algorithm is presented in this study to determine the exterior orientation of a preprocessed level lB film of the satellite image. It was found that a polynominal of 15 parameters is the best fit polynominal for exterior orientation determination, where 1st order line function is used for positon ($X_o$, $Y_o$, $Z_o$) and 2nd order line function is used for orientation (${\kappa}_o$, ${\phi}_o$, ${\omega}_o$).

  • In the radiation treatment planning (RTP) process, especially for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), knowing the exact volume and shape and the precise position of a lesion is very important. Sometimes X-ray projection images, such as angiograms, become the best choice for lesion identification. However, while the exact target position can be acquired by bi-projection images, 3D target reconstruction from bi-projection images is considered to be impossible. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the 3D target volume from multiple projection images. It was assumed that we knew the exact target position in advance, and all processes were performed in Target Coordinates, where the origin was the center of the target. We used six projections: two projections were used to make a Reconstruction Box and four projections were for image acquisition. The Reconstruction Box was made up of voxels of 3D matrices. Projection images were transformed into 3D in this virtual box using a geometric back-projection method. The resolution and the accuracy of the reconstructed target volume were dependent on the target size. An algorithm was applied to an ellipsoid model and a horseshoe-shaped model. Projection images were created geometrically using C program language, and reconstruction was also performed using C program language and Matlab ver. 6(The Mathwork Inc., USA). For the ellipsoid model, the reconstructed volume was slightly overestimated, but the target shape and position proved to be correct. For the horseshoe-shaped model, reconstructed volume was somewhat different from the original target model, but there was a considerable improvement in determining the target volume.
