  • Recently, real time data acquisition become important for space weather forecast and research. In this work, we have developed the data acquisition tools and their applications for space weather monitoring. We have developed programs to download the space weather data using IDL as well as programs to interactively display the image and data using ION (IDL on the Net). By using these tools, we have constructed the mirror site of Active Region Monitor (ARM) which summarizes several different solar activities, and developed ION programs to display TEC(Total Electron Contents) maps from GPS data at the passage of Korean satellites. At present, the KAO ARM mirror site (http://sun.kao.re.kr/arm) is successfully updated in every thirty minutes. The TEC maps from GPS data are expected to be used for monitoring the space environment of Korean satellites.

  • This research was completed to provide fundamental data regarding the guidelines to installing and managing utility facilities & structures in wetland protected area to advance the functions and sustainable use of ecology services by preserving the ecology within wetland protected area. There were 5 on-site researching areas that were used as the main subject with these areas chosen and considered from 21 inland wetlands that have been designated and are being managed from the Ministry of Environment and by their designated dates as a wetland protected area. The utility facilities in these wetland areas were categorized by their types and a detailed on-site investigation was proceeded with investigation items chosen whereas these facilities are working by their roles from their location, size, used materials, types, information contents and etc., The results showed that regarding informational structures, several locations of information boards were distanced from the main exploring routes which did not consider the visitor's eye level which had their readability dropped and by sunlight, time lapse and water penetration, many information boards were damaged or corrupted so that it was hard to confirm the information noticed or understanding an image. Insufficient observation and educational structures were installed that considered the ecological characteristics of wild animals and their living conditions. Regarding convenience facilities, there were parking lots that were installed on the fore-land and to decrease non-point solution sources, some parking lots needed to be located in protected lowlands while some facilities' shape and colors did not harmonize with their natural surroundings, creating a sense of awareness, which will need some more consideration. As for safety facilities, they were very insufficient compared to other facilities. This means that additional safety structures are needed so that related personnel can be aware of where a visitor is located when an accident occurs. Protectional facilities strongly needed new structures and a management system to cut off entrances and do surveillance so that visitors do not go into areas outside of the managed areas and bring damages to restricted locations. Research labs needed to expand the use of automatic weather systems and water gauge equipments to build fundamental data regarding floodgates that are intimated to the forming of wetlands. Sensor cameras and other types of monitoring systems are needed to monitor the majority types of animals living in the wetlands as well.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of turmeric powder on jeung-pyun. Turmeric jeung-pyun containing 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% turmeric powder was prepared and the moisture, pH, sugar, color, texture, DPPH and sensory properties of the samples were measured. Moisture contents of jeung-pyun were 51.26~51.99% and there were significant differences among the samples(p<0.001). The L-values were significantly decreased with increasing turmeric powder content. The b-value was low in the control and there were significant differences among the samples(p<0.05). Texture profile analysis showed that there were no significant differences among the groups in hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness. The hardness was the lowest in the control group and increased with increasing turmeric powder content. The antioxidant activities as measured by DPPH increased with increasing turmeric powder content (p<0.001). In the sensory evaluation, 1% addition of turmeric powder showed the highest preference in terms of color, taste, flavor, texture and overall preference(p<0.001). As determined by this study, the addition of 1% turmeric powder was the most favorable method for making use of turmeric powder in the production of jueng-pyun.

  • Purpose: Inevitably, Maxillary structural defect follows maxillary cancer extirpation. Maxillary reconstruction is over every surgeon's head. Every physician tried to overcome limited donor site of craniofacial defect. We considered to suggest optimal method of inferior orbital wall defect in functional point as well as esthetic point. Methods: We performed wide excision of maxilla and vascularized partial thickness calvarial bone flap to reconstruct the defect from cancer extirpation in three cases. We select ipsilateral superficial temporal artery, vein and outer cortex of parietal bone flap as donor. And we applied bone flap as inferior orbital wall structure. The bony surface was wrapped with fascia to prevent direct contact between orbital contents and rough bony flap surface. Computed tomography image was checked during follolw up period. Results: We can observe these patients for over two years. In all three cases, We can get fair inferior orbital wall structure. Even though they got radiation therapy, there was no limitation of extraocular movements, no diplopia. no enophthalmos. Also there was minimal donor site morbidity. Conclusion: We suggest vascularized calvarial bone flap is practically excellent strategy for inferior orbital wall reconstruction.

  • Body motions are commonly used to express emotions in virtual characters based on body parts, which are frequently employed in games. For this purpose, it is necessary to create different types of animations corresponding to the emotions shown by virtual characters. Therefore, a large of number of animations should be created for different gestures depending on the level of human emotion. In this paper, we propose a method for displaying gestures with various degrees of complexity on the basis of the level of emotion in virtual characters. In particular, this method can be used to display passive and exaggerated expressions by adding weighted values to the frames that rotate the characters to make them show different gestures depending on the level of emotion. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we use the Emotional Animation Tool (EATool), with which body-weighted values can be applied to the actual or virtual characters. After assigning different emotions to walking motions in the newly developed environment, we apply different body-weighted values depending on the level of each emotion. The results of a comparative test reveal that a given type of walking motion differs with the level of emotion.

  • This study attempted to understand the characteristics of images of scientific experiments represented and consumed on YouTube, a representative of today's new media. In particular, this paper analyzes the case studies of YouTube's hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiment based on Baudrillard's theory of Simulation and Simulacra, which discusses the strong status of images and the ambiguity of the boundary between virtual and reality. A total of 14 YouTube videos related to hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiments were analyzed. In those videos, hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiments were typically conducted with several signs representing scientific experiments, but the most important sign in the videos were bubbles produced through experiments. For more public consumption of the content, the bubbles resulted from hydrogen peroxide decomposition reproduced in YouTube have been transformed into a more spectacular image as 'super-huge' and 'explosive' bubble. Considering the influence of new media that can be accessed by students anytime and anywhere, it is positive that science experiments in new media enhance students' intimacy and access to science. At the same time, however, it is also important to note the danger that the purpose of scientific experiments will be limited to only 'showing specular images', due to the nature of new media, which mainly deals with immediate and superficial images. Furthermore, this study argues that improving students' science media literacy is required to critically examine the science-related images represented in the new media based on understanding the characteristics and limitations of new media that deeply affect daily life.

  • The carelessly and illegally copied contents are raising serious social problem as internet and multimedia technologies are advancing. Therefore, development of video copy detection system must be settled without delay. In this paper, we propose the hierarchical video copy detection method that estimates similarity using statistical characteristics between original video and manipulated(transformed) copy video. We rank according to luminance value of video to be robust to spacial transformation, and choose similar videos categorized as candidate segments in huge amount of database to reduce processing time and complexity. The copy videos generally insert black area in the edge of the image, so we remove rig black area and decide copy or not by using statistical characteristics of original video and copied video with center part of frame that contains important information of video. Experiment results show that the proposed method has similar keyframe accuracy to reference method, but we use less memory to save feature information than reference's, because the number of keyframes is less 61% than that of reference's. Also, the proposed method detects if the video is copied or not efficiently despite expansive spatial transformations such as blurring, contrast change, zoom in, zoom out, aspect ratio change, and caption insertion.

  • In this paper, we proposed fast and efficient algorithm for detecting near-duplication based on content based retrieval in large scale video database. For handling large amounts of video easily, we split the video into small segment using scene change detection. In case of video services and copyright related business models, it is need to technology that detect near-duplicates, that longer matched video than to search video containing short part or a frame of original. To detect near-duplicate video, we proposed motion distribution and frame descriptor in a video segment. The motion distribution descriptor is constructed by obtaining motion vector from macro blocks during the video decoding process. When matching between descriptors, we use the motion distribution descriptor as filtering to improving matching speed. However, motion distribution has low discriminability. To improve discrimination, we decide to identification using frame descriptor extracted from selected representative frames within a scene segmentation. The proposed algorithm shows high success rate and low false alarm rate. In addition, the matching speed of this descriptor is very fast, we confirm this algorithm can be useful to practical application.

  • As the visual fatigue induced by 3D visual stimulation has raised some safety concerns in the industry, this study aims to quantify the visual fatigue through the means of measuring the facial temperature changes. Facial temperature was measured for one minute before and after watching a visual stimulus. Whether the visual fatigue has occurred was measured through subjective evaluations and high cognitive tasks. The difference in the changes that occurred after watching a 2D stimulus and a 3D stimulus was computed in order to associate the facial temperature changes and the visual fatigue induced by watching 3D contents. The results showed significant differences in the subjective evaluations and in the high cognitive tasks. Also, the ERP latency increased after watching 3D stimuli. There were significant differences in the maximum value of the temperature at the forehead and at the tip of the nose. A previous study showed that 3D visual fatigue activates the sympathetic nervous system. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system is known to increase the heart rate as well as the blood flow into the face through the carotid arteries system. When watching 2D or 3D stimuli, the sympathetic nervous system activation dictates the blood flow, which then influences the facial temperature. This study is meaningful in that it is one of the first investigations that looks into the possibility to measure 3D visual fatigue with thermal images.
