Several masses of the alpine type ultramafic rocks are found within the Precambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex, western part of Chungnam province. They occur as discontinuous isolated lenticular bodies along the fault line(NNE direction), dominant tectonic directions of Kyeonggi gneiss complex. The ultramafic rocks occur as fault contacts with the adjacent Precambrian metamorphic and metasedimentary rocks. (omitted)
Based on mineral assemblages, field occurrences, the volcanic rocks distributed in the Geumdang Island area are divided into three types: rhyolite, porphyritic rhyolite and intermediated dyke rock. In a diagram of [TAS (total alkali-silica)], rhyolites and porphyritic rhyolites belong to the rhyolite-dacite field and rhyolite field, respectively. As to the times when the rhyolite and porphyritic rhyolite rocks were formed a whole rock K-Ar age was obtained. These absolute age determinations have revealed that the former (rhyolite) has an age of 76-78 Ma and belongs to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) and the latter (porphyritic rhyolite) is 71-72 Ma in age and thus belongs to the boundary between the Campanian and Maastrichtian. These geological ages are associated with the igneous activity of the Yuchon Group which occurred vigorously in the southern part of the Korean peninsula during the Late Cretaceous. The various geological ages of volcanic rocks distributed in the southwestern part of the peninsula and of igneous rocks found in the Cretaceous formation which contain a wide variety of minerals indicate that in this area, volcanic activities continued vigorously as a result of the collision of the Eurasian and Pacific Plates between 108-71 Ma.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alkali-silica reactivity for aggregates in Korea according to test methods: accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260; chemical test by KS F 2545 (ASTM C 289). The results are as follows: The AMBT (ASTM C 1260) results showed that two (2) igneous rocks (two mica granite and felsite), three (3) sedimentary rocks (arkose, red sandstone and shale), two (2) metamorphic rock (slate and vitric tuff), one (1) mineral (quartz) showed more expansion than 0.1% at 14 days. But, some sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks expanded more than 0.1% at 28 days even though they were less than 0.1% at 14 days. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the experimental dates more than 14 days to evaluate the possibility of alkali-aggregate reactivity. The chemical test (KS F 2545) results showed that five (5) igneous rocks (andesite, diabase, granite porphyry, muscovite granite and diorite) were indicative of potentially deleterious expansion, while two (2) igneous rocks (diorite porphyry and quartz porphyry) were possible indicative of expansion, and three (3) igneous rocks (biotite granite, two mica granite and felsite) were indicative of innocuous reactivity. The above results showed that the results from chemical method (KS F 2545) and AMBT (ASTM C 1260) had little relationship.
As an indirect method, Schmidt hammer test has been employed to investigate correlation between uniaxial compressive strengths and blow values. To conduct the experiment, researchers have examined 11 types (1,417 blocks) of rock, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea. Every kind of rocks shows different blow behaviors in which correlations of rocks have been analyzed, thus leading to results in new formulas for strength predictions. Cross-check for reliability demonstrates high confidence. Newly proposed test method is highly valued for future research on Korean rocks.
Schmidt hammer test as an indirect method has so far been widely applied for determining the physical properties of intact rock, and many researchers have developed procedures for its use on rock cores, blocks and in field. Though many methods have developed upto date for indirect using, the almost were single blow which has many errors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the established as for ASTM, ISRM, BSI, Poole & Farmer and Hucka method and to suggest a new optimum test method and statistical analysis on rocks. The finding has indicated that succeeding blow has served as an optimal to predict physical properties of rocks. To conduct the experiment, researchers have examined 150 rock blocks, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea nation wide.
Geochemical characteristics of groundwater, based on chemical analyses of 54 water samples, differ among main rocks of Haman formation, Panyawoel formation, andesite and granite in Daegu area in relation to mineralogical and chemical compositions of the rocks. Concentrations of most solutes are higher in groundwaters of Haman and Panyawoel formations than in those of andesite and granite. High concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ in groundwaters of the sedimentary rocks result mainly from reaction of $CO_2$-charged water with calcite and weathered feldspars. Average groundwaters in the sedimentary rocks are oversaturated with respect to calcite. Major types of groundwaters are hard $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ and $CaSO_2-CaCl_2$ with hardness of 442 mg/l for Haman formation and 275 mg/l for Panyawoel formation whereas they are soft $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ with hardness 35 mg/I for andesite and 39 mg/I for granite. $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ type results mainly from calcite-dissolution and $CaSO_4-CaCl_2$ from pyrite and partly from domestic pollutants. $CaSO_4-CaCl_2$ type may indicate that groundwaters in the sedimentary rocks are more evolved geochemically than those in the igneous rocks, but it is not obvious because the type might be affected by pyrie dissolution and domestic pollutions. Acid rain is buffered by active calcite in the sedimentary rocks. In the igneous rocks acid rain might react with gibbsite and other forms of $Al(OH)_3$ that might have accumulated as weathering products of primary silicates, and is buffered.

Petrochemical, K-Ar dating, Sand Rb/Sr isotopes, metallogenic zoning, paleomagnetic and geotectonic studies of the Gyongsang basin were carried out to examine applicability of plate tectonics to the post-late Cretaceous igneous activity and metallogeny in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Bulgugsa granitic rocks range from granite to adamellite, whose Q-Ab-Or triangular diagram indicates that the depth and pressure at which the magma consolidated increase from coast to inland varying from 6 km, 0.5-3.3 kb in the coastal area to 17 km, 0.5-10 kb in the inland area. 2. The volcanic rocks in Gyongsang basin range from andesitic to basaltic rocks, and the basaltic rocks are generally tholeiitic in the coastal area and alkali basalt in the inland area. 3. The volcanic rocks of the area have the initial ratio of Sr^{87}/Sr^{86} varying from 0.706 to 0.707 which suggests a continental origin; the ratio of Rb/Sr changing from 0.079-0.157 in the coastal area to 0.021-0.034 in the inland area suggests that the volcanism is getting younger toward coastal side, which may indicate a retreat in stage of differentiation if they were derived from a same magma. The K_2O/SiO_2 (60%) increases from about 1.0 in the coastal area to about 3.0 in the inland area, which may suggest an increase indepth of the Benioff zone, if existed, toward inland side. 4. The K-Ar ages of volcanic rocks were measured to be 79.4 m.y. near Daegu, and 61.7 m.y. near Busan indicating a southeastward decrease in age. The ages of plutonic rocks also decrease toward the same direction with 73 m.y. near Daegu, and 58 m.y. near Busan, so that the volcanism predated the plutonism by 6 m.y. in the continental interior and 4 m.y. along the coast. Such igneous activities provide a positive evidence for an applicability of plate tectonics to this area. 5. Sulfur isotope analyses of sulfide minerals from 8 mines revealed that these deposits were genetically connected with the spacially associated ingeous rocks showing relatively narrow range of ${\delta}^{34}S$ values (-0.9‰ to +7.5‰ except for +13.3 from Mulgum Mine). A sequence of metallogenic zones from the coast to the inland is delineated to be in the order of Fe-Cu zone, Cu-Pb-Zn zone, and W-Mo zone. A few porphyry type copper deposits are found in the Fe-Cu zone. These two facts enable the sequence to be comparable with that of Andean type in South America. 6. The VGP's of Cretaceous and post Cretaceous rocks from Korea are located near the ones($71^{\circ}N$, $180^{\circ}E$ and $90^{\circ}N$, $110^{\circ}E$) obtained from continents of northern hemisphere. This suggests that the Korean peninsula has been stable tectonically since Cretaceous, belonging to the Eurasian continent. 7. Different polar wandering path between Korean peninsula and Japanese islands delineates that there has been some relative movement between them. 8. The variational feature of declination of NRM toward northwestern inland side from southeastern extremity of Korean peninsula suggests that the age of rocks becomes older toward inland side. 9. The geological structure(mainly faults) and trends of lineaments interpreted from the Landsat imagery reveal that NNE-, NWW- and NEE-trends are predominant in the decreasing order of intensity. 10. The NNE-trending structures were originated by tensional and/or compressional forces, the directions of which were parallel and perpendicular respectively to the subduction boundary of the Kula plate during about 90 m.y. B.P. The NWW-trending structures were originated as shear fractures by the same compressional forces. The NEE-trending structures are considered to be priginated as tension fractures parallel to the subduction boundary of the Kula plate during about 70 m.y. B.P. when Japanese islands had drifted toward southeast leaving the Sea of Japan behind. It was clearly demonstrated by many authors that the drifting of Japanese islands was accompanied with a rotational movement of a clock-wise direction, so that it is inferred that subduction boundary had changed from NNE- to NEE-direction. A number of facts and features mentioned above provide a suite of positive evidences enabling application of plate tectonics to the late Cretaceous-early Tertiary igneous activity and metallogeny in the area. Synthesizing these facts, an arc-trench system of continental margin-type is adopted by reconstructing paleogeographic models for the evolution of Korean peninsula and Japan islands. The models involve an extention mechanism behind the are(proto-Japan), by which proto-Japan as of northeastern continuation of Gyongsang zone has been drifted rotationally toward southeast. The zone of igneous activity has also been migrated from the inland in late-Cretaceous to the peninsula margin and southwestern Japan in Tertiary.
Hydraulic fracturing is guaranteed to create or enlarge fracture, so the hydraulically created fracture acts as a conduit in the rock, allowing the groundwater to flow more freely through the fracture system. In a recent study, it showed that 12 wells where hydraulic fracturing was performed increased well production. However, it was estimated not to present representation by rock type due to not enough wells. Therefore, this study was performed to clarify the application of hydraulic fracturing at 19 water wells. Rocks were divided into igneous rocks (9 sites), metamorphic rocks (4 sites), and sedimentary rocks (6 sites) to evaluate representative features. As a result, the average of well yield increases $93.4\%$ in the igneous rocks, $103\%$ in the metamorphic rocks, and $42.2\%$ in the sedimentary rocks. Accordingly, hydraulic fracturing presented in this study provides an effective method for increasing well production

We made 2511 thermal property measurements on igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock samples from Korea. The average thermal conductivities of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are 3.10 W/m-K, 3.76 W/m-K, and 3.54 W/m-K, respectively. Igneous rock can be classified into pluton, hypabyssal rock, and volconic rock; the average thermal conductivities of those rock types are 3.16 W/m-K, 3.26 W/m-K, and 2.77 W/m-K, respectively. Nonclastic sedimentary rock has higher thermal conductivity than clastic sedimentary rock. Thermal conductivity of Palezoic era rock is higher than Mesozoic era rock, because dominant mineral contents play an important role in the determination of thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity of rocks is influenced by porosity. Therefore thermal conductivity of sedimentary rocks generally decreases with increasing porosity. Thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity show linear correlation, its correlation coefficient of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are 0.775, 0.855, and 0.876, respectively.

We made 980 thermal conductivity measurements on igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic rock samples from Korea. The average thermal conductivity of igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic rocks are 3.41 W/m-K, 3.98 W/m-K, 4.10 W/m-K, and 3.21 W/m-K, respectively. Thermal conductivity values of a rock type generally have a wide range because thermal conductivity depends on various factors such as dominant mineral phase, micro-structure, anisotoropy and so on. Thermal properties (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat) are important variables which are used to design a geothermal heat pump(GHP) system. Therefore, our thermal property data can contribute on a efficient design of a GHP system.
