State Estimation Technique for VRLA Batteries for Automotive Applications

  • The state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) estimation of batteries play important roles in managing batteries for automotive applications. However, an accurate state estimation of a battery is difficult to achieve because of certain factors, such as measurement noise, highly nonlinear characteristics, strong hysteresis phenomenon, and diffusion effect of batteries. In certain vehicular applications, such as idle stop-start systems (ISSs), significant errors in SOC/SOH estimation may lead to a failure in restarting a combustion engine after the shut-off period of the engine when the vehicle is at rest, such as at a traffic light. In this paper, a dual extended Kalman filter algorithm with a dynamic equivalent circuit model of a lead-acid battery is proposed to deal with this problem. The proposed algorithm adopts a battery model by taking into account the hysteresis phenomenon, diffusion effect, and parameter variations for accurate state estimations of the battery. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through experiments by using an absorbed glass mat valve-regulated lead-acid battery and a battery sensor cable for commercial ISS vehicles.

An Integer Programming Model and Heuristic Algorithm to Solve Batch Production Scheduling Problem Considering Idle State (대기 상태를 고려한 배치 단위 생산 공정에서 생산계획 수립을 위한 정수계획법 모형 및 휴리스틱 알고리즘 개발)

  • In this paper, we propose a lot-sizing and scheduling problem that seeks to minimize the sum of production cost and inventory cost over a given planning horizon while considering idle state of a machine in a batch production system. For this problem, we develop an integer programming model. And, we develop an efficient 2-phase heuristic algorithm to find a high quality feasible solution within reasonable time bounds. In the first phase, we seek to minimize the production cost by assigning batches to machines. Then, in the second phase, we find a production sequence of batches that reduces the inventory cost, while considering adding or deleting idle states between batches. Computational results show that the developed heuristic algorithm finds excellent feasible solutions within reasonable time bounds. Also, we could significantly reduce the total cost consisting of production cost and inventory cost by using the developed heuristic algorithm at a real manufacturing system that produces zinc alloys.

  • In this study, an automatic idle stop control system was developed, which automatically stops the idle state engine as it detects the stop state of the car for several seconds and restarts the stopped engine with the driver's electrical signal. It is composed of microprocessor and the related electronic circuits and communicates with ECU and TCU. With accurate and confirmed operating performance, the control system was equipped in the test car which was proceeded the ECE15+EUDC mode test. It is confirmed that the control system, ASG has much favourable effects on reducing the fuel consumption and harmful exhaust emissions.

  • This paper describes dynamic engine model that is appricable to idle speed control system development. A basic linear engine model responds to throttle and load torque Inputs to provide manifold pressure and speed outputs. Transfer functions are then derived for the modified linear engine model and significant dynamic characteristics are discussed. Lastly, the strategy for controlling idle speed uses the linear optimal control theory. The linear optimal regulator was designed using a state variable and the performance Index was minimized.

  • Volunteer Computing은 대규모 프로젝트를 많은 분산된 데스크탑, 랩탑 PC, 그리고 스마트 폰과 같은 모바일 디바이스의 idle(유휴 상태)인 컴퓨팅 자원을 기여(Volunteer)받아 수행하는 환경이다. 그러나 기여된 컴퓨팅 자원이 idle과 used(사용 상태) 간의 상태전이가 빈번히 일어나거나, idle로 지속되는 시간이 짧은 자원의 경우, 프로젝트를 수행하는데 비효율적이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 자원을 구분하고, 해당 자원의 다음 상태전이확률테이블을 계산하여 결과에 따라 해당 자원에 적합한 작업을 할당하는 방법을 제안한다.

On-Road Driving Performance Analysis of Diesel-Hybrid Bus in Daegu Metropolitan Area (대구지역 디젤하이브리드 버스의 실도로 주행 성능 분석)

  • In this study we analyzed the on-road driving performance of two parallel-type diesel-hybrid buses which have been driven in Daegu metropolitan area. A real-time on-board data logger was facilitated to measure the vehicle information such as vehicle speed, idle stop, state of charge of battery, and engine operating conditions. These diesel-hybrid buses ran as a commuter at Daegu Exco area and Dalsung industrial complex. The driving pattern in Exco area comprised more frequent idle stop and relatively lower speed than at Dalsung area, where comprised no idle stop. Due to those different driving patterns, the fuel economy at Dalsung showed $3.7\;km/{\ell}$, which is about 8% higher than that of Exco. The main causes of this come from the higher portion of regenerative braking and higher speed which moves to the operating points of diesel engine with a lower fuel consumption.

  • Self-sufficiency rate of food in South Korea is almost at the lowest level among OECD countries, and the decrease tend of farmland is expected to be continued. In this situation, the government has been revised the target self-sufficiency rate of food, and carried forward various policies in order to achieve it. One of those policies is the restoration business of idle farmland which is planned to carry forward after 2015. This study set up indicators evaluating effective use of idle farmland, and tried to apply in the field before carrying forward restoration business. The result of this study may be summarized as follows. First of all, it reset an evaluation indicator that was based on the evaluation indicator developed in order to set application directions of idle farmland. Next, it selected 30 idle farmlands with reset evaluation indicator among 11,635 which were inspected nationwide in 2012. Before applying indicator, it measured the condition of recycling such as accessibility of farmland, condition of irrigation and drainage system, land state, and surroundings by field investigation. Then, it calculated composite score in each target area through applying indicators, and verified the indicator by comparing calculated result with the one which was decided from field investigation. Finally, it carried out field investigation, correct and upgrade some problems of the standard of score calculation that was found during applying previously set evaluation indicator to target area, and established the final standard of calculation for evaluation indicator.

Performance of Backscatter Communications Using Two-Level Classification Algorithm Based on Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (인지무선통신 기반의 이중 분류법 알고리즘을 적용한 백스케터 통신의 성능)

  • The backscatter signals are very weak so they can be easily interfered by signal interferences and channels. In this paper, we propose a two-level classification algorithm for backscatter communications which chooses the idle frequency channel based on cognitive radio systems. The two-level classification algorithm provides an optimal idle frequency channel by obtaining informations about idle frequencies, fading of the channels, and the channels' usage state by primary users. Our simulation results show the improvement of BER and received power performance in backscatter communications by using the proposed algorithm, and the improvement of the algorithm's performance in backscatter communications.

  • Fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicles could be applied to internal combustion engine for the reduction of engine out emissions. Since syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component, it has abilities to enhance the combustion characteristics with wide flammability and high speed flame propagation. In this study, syngas was added to a gasoline engine to improve combustion stability and exhaust emissions of idle state. Syngas fraction is varied to 0%, 50%, 100% with various ignition timing and excess air ratio. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to widely extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions.

  • This study focuses on the state space model and the design of a state observer for the slip dynamics between rolls in STS cold cluster mills. First, a mathematical model of the roll slip is given as a nonlinear differential equation. Then, by using a Taylor series expansion, it is linearized as a state space model. Next, by using Gopinath's algorithm, a minimal-order state observer based on the state space model is designed to estimate the angular speed of all idle rolls except for an actuated roll that is measureable. Finally, a computer simulation is used to validate that the proposed state space model very well describes slip dynamics between, and moreover, the state observer very well estimates the angular speed of the idle roll.
