  • Objectives: This study was designed to develop a standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients. Methods: Korean and Chinese literature was selected that mentioned pattern identification of GERD. We gathered the pattern identification and their symptoms and a Chinese medical doctor proficient in Korean translated the Chinese characters into Korean. A Korean linguist then confirmed the translation results to develop a draft of the standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (PIGERD). The final PIGERD was developed after assessment by an expert committee composed of professors from the Korean Medicine University, using the following items: inclusion of the pattern identification and its symptoms, importance of items, and validity of translation. Results: Six pattern identifications and 94 symptoms were selected from 45 references and translated into Korean. Four pattern identifications [pattern/syndrome of liver qi invading the stomach (肝胃不和), spleen-stomach weakness (脾胃虛弱), spleen-stomach dampness-heat (脾胃濕熱), and stomach yin deficiency (胃陰不足)] and 49 symptoms were then selected through the Delphi method by the expert committee. The final standard PIGERD tool was completed after the assessment of translation validity and reflection of individual opinions by the expert committee. This tool consists of 40 items including tongue and pulse diagnosis. The weighted value was also computed from assessment of the importance of items. Conclusions: We developed a standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (PIGERD) to clarify the pattern identification of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease for standardized diagnosis.

  • A drama, generally composed of dozens of times, is one of the most popular broadcasting program genres, and it has the characteristics that the status and interrelationships of characters are changing as time goes on and important acts affecting the story occur sporadically. Therefore, when viewers missed some times in the middle of a drama, it is difficult to understand the drama without the changed information on the characters and notable actions. This paper proposes a data service which provides the updated information of the characters and important acts based on the drama scene. The data service has the characteristics that it provides the information on the characters shown in the current drama scene, and the information about the people mentioned in the dialogue in the scene. This paper includes a general introduction to the data services, the formal definition of the drama scene identification and character information, and an DVB-SI-based method for transmitting the information to the data service.

  • Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.

  • Two leptocephali [total length (TL) 68.2-80.5 mm] from the family Ophichthidae, collected from the waters south of Jeju Island, Korea, were identified using morphology. The two ophichthid leptocephali were identified as belonging to the genus Ophichthus based on morphological characters: 131-132 myomeres; nine gut swellings; dorsal fin origin above the middle of the body; five postanal pigments present from the anus to the caudal margin. Ultimately, both leptocephali were identified as Ophichthus asakusae, as the total number of myomeres was consistent with those of adult O. asakusae. Here, we first describe the morphological characteristics of the O. asakusae leptocephalus, and suggest diagnostic characters for leptocephali belonging to the genus Ophichthus.

  • Leucas aspera Link. (Lamiaceae) is an important medicinal plant in indigenous systems of medicine in India and commonly known as 'Thumbai'. It has various ethnomedicinal values as various traditional communities find diverse medicinal properties. It is used as antipyretic, stimulant, expectorant and diaphoretic drug. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of whole plant of L. aspera collected from five different geographical zones of the country-Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka, West Bengal and Gujarat. The botanical characters and TLC fingerprint profile of all the samples were quite similar but some variations were observed in physicochemical parameters. However, some microscopical characters and TLC profile can be used as diagnostic characters for identification of L. aspera, for example amphistomachic leaves and two types of trichomes-abundant, non glandular, uniseriate, 1-3 celled and few glandular, 2-5 celled stalk with rounded tip. Presence of some components at $R_fs-0.56$, 0.65 and 0.76 under UV 366 and at $R_fs-0.31$, 0.43, 0.60, 0.76 and 0.82 under visible light after derivetization in TLC profile may also be used as diagnostic character.

  • In this paper, we propose feature based character watermarking methods based on geometical features specific to characters of text in document image. The proposed methods can satisfy both data capacity and robustness simultaneously while none of the conventional methods can. According to the characteristics of characters, watermark can be embed or detected through changes of connectivity of the characters, differences of characteristics of edge pixels or changes of area of holes. Experimental results show that our identification techniques are very robust to distortion and have high data capacity.

  • The morphological characters and scientific names on 3 taxa of Korean Euphorbia were reviewed. Growing pattern of stems, arrangement of leaves, the presence of appendages, the presence of ovary's hairs, shape of seeds and the presence of caruncles were valuable characters in identifying the taxa. The correct scientifie names of Nang-dok, Keun-ttang-bin-dae and Ae-gi-ttang-bin-dae were E. fischeriana, E. hypericifolia and E. maculata respectively based on the morphological characters, the type specimens and the original descriptions. Keys to the species were provided for the accurate identification.

  • Leptochiton Gray, 1847 is one of the most ancient chiton groups which includes more than 130 species that occur in cold and deep waters worldwide. Due to their small-sized body, they are often confused as juveniles of other chiton species. Moreover, lack of morphological information makes species identification of this group very challenging. To date, only two Leptochiton species(L. fuliginatus and L. rugatus) have been reported from Korean waters. In this study, we found L. hakodatensis(Thiele, 1909) for the first time in Korea and described microscopic morphological characters of valves (tegmentum sculpture), girdle scale, and radula using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Leptochiton hakodatensis is morphologically similar to L. fuliginatus and L. rugatus, but differently characterized by having dorso-ventrally rounded (not carinated) intermediate valves, girdle (perinotum) scales sculptured with 4-7 longitudinal ribs, and bicuspid major lateral teeth of radula. In addition to morphological examination, we determined the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(cox1) as a DNA barcode sequence information. This is the first report that describes microscopic characters (tegmentum of valves, girdle structure, and radula) of L. hakodatensis using a SEM. This study provides a morphological basis for describing Leptochiton species and discovery of a "hidden" species of this genus.

  • In this paper, we propose a character-based summarization algorithm using speaker identification method from the dialog in video. First, we extract the dialog of shots containing characters' face and then, classify the scene according to actor/actress by performing speaker identification. The classifier is based on the GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) using the 24 values of MFCC(Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient). GMM is trained to recognize one actor/actress among four who are all trained by GMM. Our experiment result shows that GMM classifier obtains the error rate of 0.138 from our video data.
