  • The MeOH extract of seeds of Cerbera odollam Gaertn. (Apocynaceae) was screened for its antibacterial, cytotoxic and neuropharmacological activities. The extract showed moderate anti-bacterial activity against Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus saprophyticus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. It exhibited high level cytotoxicity against brine shrimp ($LC_{50}$: $3\;{\mu}g/ml$). The extract potentiated pentobarbital induced sleeping time in mice which was further supported by the exploratory behavior test at dose of 25 mg/kg. The overall results tend to suggest the antibacterial, cytotoxic and CNS depressant activities of the extract.

  • The crude ethanol extract of leaves of Sonneratia caseolaris Linn. (Sonneratiaceae) was screened for its antinociceptive and antidiarrhoeal activities. The extract produced significant writhing inhibition in acetic acid induced writhing in mice at dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (P<0.01) comparable to the standard drug diclofenac sodium at the dose of 25 mg/kg of body weight. When tested for its antidiarrhoeal effects on castor oil induced diarrhea in mice, it increased mean latent period and decreased the frequency of defecation significantly at the dose of 500 mg/kg body weight (P < 0.05) comparable to the standard drug loperamide at the dose of 50 mg/kg of body weight. The overall results tend to suggest the antinociceptive and antidiarrhoeal activities of the extract.

  • CQUEAN(Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) has been used at the 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope of the McDonald Observatory since 2010. This camera is optimized at 0.7 - 1.1 um for the survey of Lyman break of high redshift (z > 5) quasars in the early universe. The current system has a filter wheel consist of seven (g', r', I', z', Y, Iz and Is) broad-band filters. We are upgrading this filter wheel to have 20 narrow band filters, with which we can take spectral energy distributions of targets. The new filter wheel consists of interchangeable cartridges for 50 mm square filters, a speed reducer unit, and a step motor. This new design of the large size filter wheel can be applied to other large format CCD cameras.

  • A study was conducted to develop a better classification method of Consumer Attributes that can enhance user-centered product design process. A modified QFD(Quality Function Deployment) survey form based upon Fuzzy set theory was proposed which contains 9 steps of importance level, and Certainty and Necessity function to improve the reliability of extracted consumer attributes. To verify the betterment and advantage of proposed classification method, a series of questionnaire survey was performed. Thirty male and 30 female university students were participated in the survey using a VCR as a target product. The result of the study showed that 80% of subjects were preferred the proposed classification over existing method. A cluster analysis was performed to further verify the betterment of the proposed method. The result also supported that the proposed classification method is more reliable and enhanced method in extracting consumer attributes and can be applied in the product design.

  • By considering a bridge between Bram-Halmos and Embry characterizations for the subnormality of cyclic operators, we extend the Curto-Fialkow and Embry truncated complex moment problem, and solve the problem finding the finitely atomic representing measure ${\mu}$ such that ${\gamma}_{ij}={\int}\bar{z}^iz^jd{\mu},\;(0{\le}i+j{\le}2n,\;|i-j|{\le}n+s,\;0{\le}s{\le}n);$ the cases of s = n and s = 0 are induced by Bram-Halmos and Embry characterizations, respectively. The former is the Curto-Fialkow truncated complex moment problem and the latter is the Embry truncated complex moment problem.

  • The differential quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predictions for the $W^{\pm}$ boson and a single jet as functions of the lepton pseudorapidity in proton-proton collisions are presented up next-to-leading order correction in QCD. The predictions are done by using the most modern parton distribution functions (PDFs). To check the reliability of the PDFs, we compared 7 TeV predictions with the available experimental results at the corresponding energy. Finally, the differential QCD predictions and the asymmetry between the $W{^+}+1$ jet and $W{^-}+1$ jet events at $\sqrt{s}=7$, 8, 13, 14 and 100 TeV are discussed in detail.

  • The aim of this paper is to obtain the general solution of the 2-variable radical functional equations $f({\sqrt[k]{x^k+z^k}},\;{\sqrt[{\ell}]{y^{\ell}+w^{\ell}}})=f(x,y)+f(z,w)$, x, y, z, w ∈ ℝ, for f a mapping from the set of all real numbers ℝ into a vector space, where k and ℓ are fixed positive integers. Also using the fixed point result of Brzdęk and Ciepliński [11, Theorem 1] in (2, 𝛽)-Banach spaces, we prove the generalized hyperstability results of the 2-variable radical functional equations. In the end of this paper we derive some consequences from our main results.

  • The effect of fumed silica loading on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of fluorosilicone (FVMQ) rubber was investigated. The distribution of fumed silica inside FVMQ was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, and the thermal stability of composites was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and by the changes in mechanical performance during thermo-oxidative aging. The function mechanism of fumed silica was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that with increasing silica content, the crosslink density of composites, the modulus at 100%, and tensile strength also increased, whereas the elongation at break decreased. Furthermore, increasing the silica content of composites increased the initial decomposition temperature (Td) and residual weight of the composite after exposure to nitrogen. In addition, the thermal oxidative aging experiment demonstrated improved aging resistance of the FVMQ composites, including lower change in tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 100%.

  • Objective: The aim was to study the influence of cooling milk at 9℃ at the farm versus keeping it at 20℃ on Parmigiano Reggiano cheese lipolysis. Methods: A total of six cheesemaking trials (3 in winter and 3 in summer) were performed. In each trial, milk was divided continuously into two identical aliquots, one of which was kept at 9℃ (MC9) and the other at 20℃ (MC20). For each trial and milk temperature, vat milk (V-milk) and the resulting 21 month ripened cheese were analysed. Results: Fat and dry matter and fat/casein ratio were lower in MC9 V-milk (p≤0.05) than in MC20. Total bacteria, mesophilic lactic acid and psychrotrophic and lipolytic bacteria showed significant differences (p≤0.05) between the two V-milks. Regarding cheese, fat content resulted lower and crude protein higher (p≤0.05) both in outer (OZ) and in inner zone (IZ) of the MC9 cheese wheels. Concerning total fatty acids, the MC9 OZ had a lower concentration of butyric, capric (p≤0.05) and medium chain fatty acids (p≤0.05), while the MC9 IZ had lower content of butyric (p≤0.05), caproic (p≤0.01) and short chain fatty acids (p≤0.05). The levels of short chain and medium chain free fatty acids (p≤0.05) were lower and that of long chain fatty acids (p≤0.05) was higher in MC9 OZ cheese. The principal component analysis of total and free fatty acids resulted in a clear separation among samples by seasons, whereas slight differences were observed between the two different milk temperatures. Conclusion: Storing milk at 9℃ at the herd affects the chemical composition of Parmigiano Reggiano, with repercussion on lipolysis. However, the changes are not very relevant, and since the cheese can present a high variability among the different cheese factories, such changes should be considered within the "normal variations" of Parmigiano Reggiano chemical characteristics.
