The Influence of Optimism and Academic Resilience on the Major Satisfaction among Undergraduate Nursing Students (간호대학생의 낙관성과 학업탄력성이 전공만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of optimism, academic resilience, and major satisfaction of nursing students, and identify influencing factors of major satisfaction. The study was a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design. A convenience sample of 286 nursing students was conducted from a university in Busan. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierachical multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS version 23.0. The average score of optimism, academic resilience and major satisfaction in nursing students were 3.85±0.54, 3.87±0.52 and 3.75±0.63 respectively. The degree of major satisfaction was positively correlated with optimism and academic resilience. The significant predictors of major satisfaction were optimism(β=.385, p<.001) and academic resilience(β=.356, p<.001), explaining 49.2% of the independent variables. Accordingly, in order to increase the major satisfaction level of nursing college students, it is necessary to develop a program that can improve optimism and academic resilience, and apply it in the nursing curriculum.

  • The university bachelor's system is based on autonomy, but due to the rigid academic structure, it is not appropriate to respond to changes in social demand. Recently, universities are pursuing diversification of their bachelor's system. With the introduction of various majors (linkage major, convergence major, autonomic major, and self-design major), efforts are being made to nurture convergence talent based on mutual linkages between major and departments. This study introduces the design and operation process of 'Global Creative Convergence Major' which the four universities of Chungcheong region promoted as a union. In particular, it derives the key elements of each step and presents the operating model and implications based on the main features. Convergence major operation model constitutes educational system (talent award, educational goal, competency factor, curriculum) through linkage between specialization areas of universities. The competency elements contain creative competence, convergence competency, problem solving competency, and global competency.

Influencing Factors the Nurse Image Recognized by Nursing Students on Major Commitment (간호대학생이 인식하는 간호사 이미지가 전공몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • This study attempted to understand the nurse image and major commitment of nursing students, investigate their relationship, and prepare necessary measures to improve the major commitment of nursing students. The data were collected from 185 nursing students enrolled in seven nursing colleges and were analyzed statistically with the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. The research results are as follows. It was confirmed that the more positive the nurse image perceived by the subject, the higher the major commitment. In addition, influencing factors the major commitment of nursing students identified in the order of major satisfaction, perception of nursing, nurse image, and aptitude and interest among nursing selection motives, and total explanatory power was 42%. Based on the above results, it is necessary to develop and apply a program including a positive nurse image for nursing students.

NANOG expression in parthenogenetic porcine blastocysts is required for intact lineage specification and pluripotency

  • Objective: Nanog homeobox (NANOG) is a core transcription factor that contributes to pluripotency along with octamer binding transcription factor-4 (OCT4) and sex determining region-Y box-2 (SOX2). It is an epiblast lineage marker in mammalian pre-implantation embryos and exhibits a species-specific expression pattern. Therefore, it is important to understand the lineage of NANOG, the trophectoderm, and the primitive endoderm in the pig embryo. Methods: A loss- and gain-of-function analysis was done to determine the role of NANOG in lineage specification in parthenogenetic porcine blastocysts. We analyzed the relationship between NANOG and pluripotent core transcription factors and other lineage makers. Results: In NANOG-null late blastocysts, OCT4-, SOX2-, and SOX17-positive cells were decreased, whereas GATA binding protein 6 (GATA6)-positive cells were increased. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that the expression of SOX2 was decreased in NANOG-null blastocysts, whereas that of primitive endoderm makers, except SOX17, was increased. In NANOG-overexpressing blastocysts, caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX2-), SOX17-, and GATA6-positive cells were decreased. The results indicated that the expression of primitive endoderm markers and trophectoderm-related genes was decreased. Conclusion: Taken together, the results demonstrate that NANOG is involved in the epiblast and primitive endoderm differentiation and is essential for maintaining pluripotency within the epiblast.

Role for Epigenetic Mechanisms in Major Depression (우울증의 후생유전적 기전의 역할)

  • Major depression is a devastating disorder of which lifetime prevalence rate is as high as up to 25% in general population. Although the etiology of the disorder is still poorly understood, it is generally accepted that both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the precipitation of depression. Stressful lifetime events are potent precipitating environmental factors for major depression and early-life stress is in particular an important element that predisposes individuals to major depression later in life. How environmental factors such as stress can make our neural networks susceptible to depression and how those factors leave long-lasting influences have been among the major questions in the field of depression research. Epigenetic regulations can provide a bridging mechanism between environmental factors and genetic factors so that these two factors can additively determine individual predispositions to major depression. Here we introduce epigenetic regulations as candidate mechanisms that mediate the integration of environmental adversaries with genetic predispositions, which may lead to the development of major depression, and summarize basic molecular events that underlie epigenetic regulations as well as experimental evidences that support the active role of epigenetic regulation in major depression.

Ginsenoside Rg1 Improves In vitro-produced Embryo Quality by Increasing Glucose Uptake in Porcine Blastocysts

  • Ginsenoside Rg1 is a natural compound with various efficacies and functions. It has beneficial effects on aging, diabetes, and immunity, as well as antioxidant and proliferative functions. However, its effect on porcine embryo development remains unknown. We investigated the effect of ginsenoside Rg1 on the in vitro development of preimplantation porcine embryos after parthenogenetic activation in high-oxygen conditions. Ginsenoside treatment did not affect cleavage or blastocyst formation rates, but did increase the total cell number and reduced the rate of apoptosis. In addition, it had no effect on the expression of four apoptosis-related genes (Bcl-2 homologous antagonist/killer, B-cell lymphoma-extra large, Caspase 3, and tumor protein p53) or two metabolism-related genes (mechanistic target of rapamycin, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B), but increased the expression of Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), indicating that it may increase glucose uptake. In summary, treatment with the appropriate concentration of ginsenoside Rg1 ($20{\mu}g/mL$) can increase glucose uptake, thereby improving the quality of embryos grown in high-oxygen conditions.

Effect of Radiology Department Students' Motivation for Major Selection and Satisfaction on University Life Adjustment (방사선(학)과 학생들의 전공 선택 동기 및 전공 만족도가 대학생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to understand the motivation for major selection and degree of satisfaction with major for university students in the department of Radiology, and to analyze the effect university life adjustment in COVID-19. From Jung 20 to July 20, 2021, 308 students in grades 1~4 were enrolled at universities in Busan and Gyeongnam. Factors influencing university life adjustment were found to have a good adjustment when majoring was selected with personal motive rather than social motive. Among the sub-factors of major satisfaction, general satisfaction and satisfaction with surrounding relationships had a positive effect on university life adjustment. Therefore, in order to adapt to healthy university life, it is necessary to secure closeness between school, professor, and students, and it is desirable to provide students with opportunities to experience various education by recognizing the rapidly changing policy changes in education to increase major satisfaction. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for successful university life of students in the department of radiology.

Recommendation System of University Major Subject based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (심층 강화학습 기반의 대학 전공과목 추천 시스템)

  • Existing simple statistics-based recommendation systems rely solely on students' course enrollment history data, making it difficult to identify classes that match students' preferences. To address this issue, this study proposes a personalized major subject recommendation system based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). This system gauges the similarity between students based on structured data, such as the student's department, grade level, and course history. Based on this information, it recommends the most suitable major subjects by comprehensively considering information about each available major subject and evaluations of the student's courses. We confirmed that this DRL-based recommendation system provides useful insights for university students while selecting their major subjects, and our simulation results indicate that it outperforms conventional statistics-based recommendation systems by approximately 20%. In light of these results, we propose a new system that offers personalized subject recommendations by incorporating students' course evaluations. This system is expected to assist students significantly in finding major subjects that align with their preferences and academic goals.

A Study of the Acoustic Analysis in Japanese /t/ by Koreans (일본어 /t/의 음향음성학적 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the acoustic patterns of Japanese /t/ produced by 40 Korean speakers in order to find an effective method of teaching it to Koreans. The experimental data consisted of 400 /t/ phonemes in word initial or non-initial positions of 10 words. Informants were in their twenties and raised in Daejeon and the surrounding area. Results showed that there were distinctive trends in duration and intensity of the major and non-major groups productions. Both groups pronounced the phoneme longer than the native speakers with more open mouths but with less loudness. The formant analysis showed that F1 values of the Japanese /t/ pronounced by Japanese major group were lower than those of the non-major. Its F2 values by the major group were higher than those of the non-major, which would suggest that the Koreans produced the tongue blade in more frontal position than the native speakers.

Exploring Factors Affecting Major Persistence and Career Decision of Engineering Students through FGI Analysis (FGI 분석을 통한 공과대학생의 전공 유지와 진로 결정의 영향 요인 탐색)

  • This research aims to explore the factors affecting engineering students' major persistence and career decision. To achieve this goal, the experiences and perceptions of engineering students and other stakeholders regarding the factors influencing engineering students' major persistence and career decision were analyzed through online focus group interviews (FGI). The analysis of the interviews resulted in the identification of seven categories, which include meeting with older alumni, team project experiences, and internship experiences as factors influencing major persistence. Additionally, engineering interest, engineering self-efficacy, employment rates, economic factors, and limitations in women engineers' career development were identified as factors affecting career decision. Based on these findings, it is expected that engineering education will develop plans that focus on supporting the major persistence and career development of engineering students, thereby contributing to the future direction of engineering education.
