This study investigated the degrees of knowledge management processes according to the levels of social capital(i.e., inter-departmental communication, trust, cooperation and integration) as well as information technology(IT) infrastructure(i.e., knowledge storage and transfer IT, and knowledge search IT) in Korean manufacturing firms. We also demonstrated the differences in organizational performance under various degrees of knowledge management processes. Through cluster analysis with social capital variables, we classified sample firms into five groups; 'the highest firms', 'higher firms', 'middle firms', 'lower firms', and 'the lowest firms'. It was also observed that the degrees of knowledge management processes and organizational performance in 'the highest firms' is the highest. With a structural equation modeling technique, the causal relationships among social capital, IT infrastructure, knowledge management processes, and organizational performance were confirmed. Hence, it is concluded that social capital and IT infrastructure have direct effects on knowledge management processes, and indirectly influence organizational performance through the degrees of knowledge management processes.
This study empirically investigated the effects of both organizational culture(i.e., innovative, supportive and bureaucratic) and information technology(IT) infrastructure(i.e., knowledge storage, transfer and search IT) on the knowledge management(KM) activities(i.e., knowledge creation, sharing and application) in Korean manufacturing firms. We also partially demonstrated the impact of KM activities on the KM performance(i.e., KM satisfaction) of a firm. Through multiple regression analyses, it was found that innovative and supportive culture, and IT infrastructure have a positive impact on the activation of KM activities. The results of this study also showed that the innovative and supportive culture positively influence the adoption of IT infrastructure, and through the construction of IT, they have an indirect effect on KM activities. With a structural equation modeling technique, the causal relationships among organizational culture, IT infrastructure, knowledge management activities, and KM performance were confirmed. Hence, it is concluded that culture and IT infrastructure have direct effects on KM activities, and culture also indirectly influences KM activities through the adoption of IT infrastructure.
This study empirically investigated the effects of the target costing system as well as information technology(IT) infrastructure on the knowledge management processes(i.e., socialization, externalization, combination and internalization) and the performance of a firm. This study also examined an impact of the social capital(i.e., inter-departmental communication, trust, cooperation and integration) on the adoption and development of the target costing and the IT infrastructure. The results of this study showed that inter-departmental communication, trust and integration have a significant positive impact on the adoption of the target costing. It was also found that the effects of inter-departmental communication and integration on the development of storage and transfer infrastructure are significant and positive. However, in the adoption of search infrastructure, only the impact of inter-departmental integration was significant. The results of regression analyses presented that the target costing has significant influence on the four processes of knowledge management. It was also observed that the effects of storage and transfer infrastructure on combination are significant and positive. In search infrastructure, the impact on combination and internalization was significant. According to the results of this study, it was found that when the adoption level of the target costing is high, search infrastructure mainly affects the three processes(i.e., socialization, combination and internalization). However, under a low adoption level of the target costing, the impact of storage and transfer infrastructure on the whole processes was significant and positive. Thus, it is assumed that storage and transfer infrastructure complements a low level of the target costing adoption through the active transfer and sharing of explicit and tacit knowledge.

Recently, companies have adopted various types of smartwork. In this study, various factors were examined to identify the main factors that can increase smartwork satisfaction, individual performance, and organizational performance. As the main variables, individual adaptability, knowledge level for smartwork, IT infrastructure level, smartwork organizational culture, and investment level in IT were selected. As a result, first, it was found that individual adaptability did not affect smartwork satisfaction and corporate performance, unlike previous studies. Second, it was found that the knowledge level for smartwork affects individual performance and organizational performance mediating smartwork satisfaction. Third, the main path of 'investment level in IT → IT infrastructure level → smartwork organizational culture → organizational performance' was found. Therefore, companies need to raise the level of knowledge for smartwork among members of the organization and educate that smartwork contributes to improving the quality of life of members. In addition, efforts should be made to build an organizational culture suitable for smartwork through IT investment and establishment of IT infrastructure.
Purpose: This research investigates the impact of technology adoption on organisation productivity. The framework has three independent variables viz. technological change, information technology (IT) infrastructure, and IT knowledge management and one dependent variable as organisational productivity. Research design, data and methodology: An explanatory research design with a quantitative research method was employed, and data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire using online as well as an offline survey. The sample consisted of 300 IT managers and senior-level executives (production as well as service team) in leading IT companies in Malaysia selected using snowball sampling. Normality and reliability assessment was performed in the first stage utilising SPSS 22, and Confirmatory Factory Analysis (CFA) was performed with maximum likelihood estimation to assess the internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Finally, Structural Equation Model (SEM) and path analysis are conducted using AMOS 22. Results: The research findings demonstrated that technological change and IT infrastructure positively and significantly impact the organisation's productivity while IT knowledge management has significant but negative impact on organizational productivity of IT companies in Malaysia. Conclusion: The research concludes that all three factors plays important role in deciding organizational producvity. Recommendations, implications, limitations and future research avenues are discussed.
The influence factors on the development of information technology(IT) infrastructure for knowledge management(KM) were not empirically investigated and identified. This study empirically examines the relationships among strategic performance measurement systems(SPMS), organizational learning, the strategic alignment of business strategy with information systems(IS) strategy, which is the necessary condition to provide the kinds of knowledge required for the successful realization of business strategy, and the active construction of IT infrastructure for KM. This study demonstrates that SPMS directly affects the organizational learning, with which the members of an organization acquire the types of knowledge about strategic goals or objectives and the ways attaining these goals, and indirectly influences the IS strategic alignment through organizational learning. Thus, the alignment between business strategy and IS strategy can be facilitated and activated by the adoption and implementation of SPMS. According to the results of this study, it is observed that the IS strategic alignment and organizational learning positively affect the activation of the development of KM IT infrastructure in a firm. The results of this study also shows that the construction of KM IT infrastructure, which supports the realization of KM activities, such as knowledge creation, transfer and sharing, can enhance the strategic position of a firm, and the intensified competitiveness of a firm can lead to the improvement of performance.
This research reviewed previous research related to Performance Measurement Models of Knowledge Management (PMMKM) in order to integrate their findings with more recent research and construct a new PMMKM. This new hypothetical PMMKM consists of an input sector, a process sector, an outcome sector, and an infrastructure sector. Each sector has three measurement items with the exception of the infrastructure sector which has two. Empirical analyses testing the overall performance model validity of the hypothetical PMMKM were favorable. However, it show be noted that the "share process" and "utilization process" items in the process sector merged into one single item. The same is true with the "individual outcome" and "organization outcome" items in the outcome sector found one single item. The study's results reveal three implications with respect to performance. First, there are derived integrated performance measurement sectors and items based on overall management process of knowledge management, which can be practically applied to the government related research entities. This became apparent after extensive review or previous theoretical studies related to the public sector and private sector. Second, weighted performance measurement of knowledge management using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) Analysis makes it possible to propose PMMKM in government sponsored research institutes. Finally, measuring performance to management knowledge, as shown in this study, will prove useful for inside and outside experts who propose specific guidelines and methodologies for Knowledge management at government sponsored research institutes.
The success of new product development is a key factor for getting competitive advantages. Marketing research has been investigating marketing capability, manufacturing technical capability, cross-functional integration, market knowledge competence, market orientation, and competitive environment as the key success factors of new product development. Recently, the role of IT infrastructure in enhancing new product advantage is assumed in the literature. However, the empirical studies on the role of IT infrastructure are lacking. The purpose of this study is to empirically exam the impacts of IT infrastructure on new product competitive advantage. In this study, IT infrastructure is conceptualized as the flexibility of IT infrastructure. Based on previous research, a conceptual model is established by incorporating the direct impact of IT infrastructure flexibility and its indirect impact through the key success factors on new product development. To empirically test the research model, data are surveyed from a pair of IS department and Marketing department of 92 consumer goods manufacturers. By employing PLS technique, the measurement reliability and reliability of research variables are tested and the path analysis is conducted to do the hypothesis testing. The path analysis shows that IT infrastructure flexibility has no direct effect on new product advantage, However, the indirect effect of IT infrastructure is found, which is mediated by marketing capability, manufacturing technical capability, cross-functional integration, and market orientation respectively. Hence, The flexible IT infrastructure increases cross-functional integration (H1), market orientation (H3), marketing capability (H5), and manufacturing technical capability (H6). All success factors of new product development excepts for competitive environment have a positive association with new product competitive advantages (from H10 to H14). Finally, the path from IT infrastructure flexibility to cross-functional integration, to market orientation, to market knowledge capability, and to new product advantage is found as the strongest path. These results indicate that the flexible IT infrastructure enhances information sharing with multiple departments and collaboration within a distributed innovation environment. The collaboration among departments positively affects the level of customer and competitor intelligence. The ability to obtain knowledge about customers and competitors makes firms to adapt to a changing environment quickly and to respond to customers' demands adequately. The flexible IT infrastructure also enhances the capability of organization to more rapidly respond to the changes in product design resulting in faster product development and reduced costs. In addition to, it enhances marketing capability by the two-way communications with customers and the analyses of various kinds of customer data. In brief, the finding of this study suggests that the flexible IT infrastructure allows many firms to pursue sustained new product competitive advantages. This study advances research on IT infrastructure in two important aspects. First, by Integrating marketing research and IS research, this study develops a conceptual model on the role of IT infrastructure in enhancing new product advantage. Second, it empirically finds the indirect impacts of IT infrastructure on new product advantage, which confirms the potential for the IS field to contribute to new product development research. The limitations of this study are also discussed to provide research directions for future research.
Based on the usage levels of target costing systems(TCS) and information technology (IT) infrastructure, this study aims to develop a framework useful for classifying four types of knowledge management(KM) strategies in manufacturing firms: process-oriented, product-oriented, mixed and negative. We adopted a multi-methodological approach by mixing both qualitative and quantitative methods. Before developing a framework, through a case study of the H Motor Company in Korea, this paper investigated and showed the functions of TCS in the management of tacit knowledge. The results from the case study indicated that with the use of TCS, a firm can create, transfer, and share diverse kinds of tacit knowledge among employees for the facilitation of process innovation. We also empirically confirmed the four types of KM strategies, and demonstrated the characteristics(i.e., size, total sales, age, and knowledge intensity) of the organizations adopting each strategy.
While past knowledge management researches have focused on conceptualization and strategic implications, knowledge asset researches attempt to provide practical guidelines for companies. However, each research classifies knowledge asset from its own perspective, and thus it is not a trivial task to leverage consistent and inclusive criteria in managing corporate knowledge asset. The objective of this paper is to develop a knowledge asset classification schema on the basis of the three business functions: customer relationship management, product innovation, and infrastructure management. To demonstrate the feasibility of our schema, it has been applied to 9 Korean corporations. Knowledge assets are evaluated according to core capabilities, which are main drivers of sustainable competitive advantages. The results of case study show that the leveraged classification schema reflects current knowledge asset management and characteristics of corporations. Our finding is that most top-quality knowledge management corporations are likely to develop well-balanced knowledge asset.
