  • The IT services industry is considered as the leading industry of the ubiquitous age that raises a nation's overall productivity and efficiency. Therefore, it is receiving increasing attention as the industry that can bring about economic takeoff and successful overseas market entrance for the next generation. In order to achieve successful development, the industry should be competitive and armed with strategies that well demonstrate the characteristics of IT services. Therefore, it is important to explore the competitive factors of the industry for its qualitative development from the perspectives of IT services industry policies and as well as IT services companies. This study categorized IT services into three types-system integration, IT consulting, and IT outsourcing- and then examined the competitive factors of each service type and their relationships with financial and non-financial performances. In conclusion, the current competitiveness of domestic IT services industry is attributed to institutions environment rather than its competitive advantages in technology, quality, know-how, and highly qualified human resources. In order to facilitate the sound growth of the IT industry and seek reasonable market competition, the environment that puts its priority on the improvement of institutions environment and the ability to carry out a project needs to be established. In all, this study can be utilized as an important knowledge for the establishment of polices to foster IT services industry and of strategies that raise competitiveness to maximize the performances of companies.

  • Health industry, a knowledge based high value-added industry, is being considered as a strategic area for the 21C and many advanced countries are making every endeavors for the promotion of health industry along with information technology, new materials, and mechatronics. Korean health industry, however, has been excluded from the governmental supports as well as bound by strict regulation so far, and there is a significant gap in technology compared with advanced countries. In 21C, technology is the main factor of national competitiveness and that is why the role of R&D institutes are so important in the high level of competition to cope with the technology protection policies of advanced countries. In this article, with Directory of Korean R&D Institutes published by Korea Industry Technology Association, I reviewed the trends of R&D institute of health industry. Main findings of the research can be summarized as follows. The portion of health industry R&D institute is 3.6% of total R&D institute but the amount of R&D investment is over than 5% This means health industry are knowledge based and R&D intensified industry, meanwhile the variations of same industry R&D institutes of health industry is huge in R&D investments and other activities. Regional distributions of health industry institutes show some kind of different patterns in each industry areas. Medical devices and Medical informatics's preference of metropolitan region are distinguished with other industry areas. Many of the institutes are located in same site of it's company rather than operating separate building for R&D specific uses. It is better for transforming ideas to products and close cooperation of research body with product lines, but it is a handicap for networking and communicating with other research institutions too. It takes 18.4yrs for bearing R&D institute on the average. For a long times 'copy products' or 'me too products' policies were easy way to maintain business entities. But recently, it is recognized that research activities are essential component of sustaining it's own business firms. This means technology itself is leading power of corporation itself in the high level of competition.

  • This study proposes the accurate labor inducement coefficient (employment inducement coefficient/hiring inducement coefficient) of Korea software industry by analyzing the inter-industry relation using the modified inter-industry table. To rewrite the inter-industry table of Korea, some previous studies related to the inter-industry analysis were reviewed and the key problems were identified. First, in the current inter-industry table published by the Bank of Korea, the output of software industry includes not only the pure software related output but also the output of non-software section due to the misclassification of the industry. This causes the output to become bigger than the actual output of software industry. Therefore, if the inter-industry table is not modified, the labor inducement coefficient would be overestimated too much. Second, during rewriting the inter-industry table, the output is changing. The inter-industry table is the table in the form of rows and columns, which records the transactions of goods and services among industries which are required to continue the activities of each industry. Accordingly, if only an output of a specific industry is changed, the reliability of the table would be degraded because the table is prepared based on the relations with other industries. This possibly causes the labor inducement coefficient to be over or underestimated. This study tries to correct these problems to get the more accurate labor inducement coefficient of the software industry. First, to get the output of the pure software section only, the data from the Korea Electronics Association (KEA) was used in the inter-industry table. Second, to prevent the difference in the outputs during rewriting the inter-industry table, the difference between the output in the current inter-industry table and the output from KEA data was identified and then it was defined as the non-software section output for the analysis. The followings are the labor inducement coefficient obtained when the output is divided into the pure software section (package software, and IT service) and non-software section. As of 2011, the employment inducement coefficients of pure software section, package software section and IT service of Korea were 8.616, 13.998, and 7.773 respectively while the labor inducement coefficients of pure software section, package software section and IT service of Korea were 7.979, 13.332, and 7.083, respectively.

  • This paper investigates the impact of the government R&D expenditure on the IT industry in Korea. The analysis of such impact can be used to derive the policy implications for the IT industry. The contribution of government R&D to the IT industry was analyzed based on the input-output table of the year 1990-1995-2000. The results show that the amount of the government R&D expenditure induced the IT industry to book twice greater production than it would have been in the absence of such government R&D expenditure during the period under investigation. It is also shown that job creation was strongly encouraged in the broadcasting equipment, software and computer-related services. During the period under the study, the composition of the workers in the IT hardware industry remained unchanged while the production increased significantly, which confirms the jobless growth in the IT hardware industry. The results of this study suggest that the government R&D should focus on improving the competitiveness of the intermediate good and parts industry.

  • Competitiveness of service industry in Korea is relatively lower than OECD countries'. Korean government, therefore, has been trying to improve the competitiveness of service industry by accelerating information technology (IT) adoption. Even though most of factors of IT can be contributed to improve the financial performance, it may be affected differently among various industry types and life cycles of companies. Therefore, it is one of very important research issues to analyze the influential effect of IT considering industry types and organizational life cycles in service industries. The purpose of this study is to find out critical success factors of IT which influence financial performance considering different types and life cycles of service industries. We developed the model and identified key success factors of IT adoption as IT system quality, Information quality, IT maintenance, CEO support, IT education of organization, and IT competence of user. Additional analysis of moderating effect by organizational life-cycle and types of service industry are conducted. For data sampling 856 companies are participated and total 2,000 questionnaires are collected. Structural equation modeling method is conducted for statistical analysis. The results show that the model is valid and most of success factors of it are very useful for improving financial performance of service industries except organizational IT education. Moderating effect of industry types and organizational life cycles is valid but partially accepted. The results might be able to provide useful directions and guide lines of IT acceleration in service industries.

  • Demand for stone products used as building materials is increasing. The construction industry, the value of the stone industry is sufficient, but the domestic stone industry is very lag regarding IT utilization. However, the overseas stone industry produces high-quality products using IT. In this study, we want to offer an IT application technology priority fit for the stone industries. We identify the current status and production process of the stone industries, then set the priority of various IT, so that obtain competitiveness in the domestic stone industries, and minimize the gap between the overseas stone industries. Therefore, we used AHP method; stone industry production processes were selected as the Enterprise Operation Management, Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Maintenance of first-tier. The second-tier ones are consisted of 30 factors out of IT elements. Focus group interviews were conducted to confirm the validity of each factor. As a result, most important factors of first-tier was selected as the order of Manufacturing, Quarrying, Enterprise Operation Management, and Construction & Maintenance. The top 5 of 30 factors in the second-tier were selected Smart Sensor, Mobile Device, Robot of manufacturing, GIS of quarrying, and SCM of enterprise operation management. And the factor that relatively less important was GPS of construction and maintenance. If properly applied an IT application technology for stone industry, we expect to provide efficient production lines and increase customer satisfaction, which will ultimately expand the promotion for the industry and thus act as positive factor in promoting the stone industry.

  • This study examines whether expenditures in information technology (IT) are associated with increases in the Tobin's q ratios a measure of organizational performance. It uses two groups of sample, Korean and American firms that disclose IT expenditures. For the all-firms group of each country, the association between IT expenditures and Tobin's q ratios is positive and statistically significant. But the association varies among industries. For Korean firms, IT expenditures appear to increase Tobin's q ratios for the machine and equipment manufacturing industry group (SIC3-2). IT expenditure ratio of this group as a percent of total sales is highest among the industry groups. For all service industry groups(SIC4&5), the estimated coefficient of IT expenditures is positive but statistically insignificant. For American firms IT expenditures in most of the manufacturing industry groups appear to increase only a little, if at all, for the Tobin's q ratios. But IT expenditures appear to have a greater impact on Tobin's q ratios for all service industries (SIC4-7). For three service industries tested (transportation and telecommunication- SIC4, financial- SIC6, consulting and other service industry- SIC7), the estimated coefficient of IT expenditures is positive and statistically significant. The evidence from both Korean and American firms suggests that IT expenditures in service industries provide a greater impact on an organizational performance than ones in manufacturing industry. To test whether service industries use a competitive strategy utilizing IT as a core competence, the samples ore divided into two groups, service and manufacturing industry. For Korean firms, both IT and R&D expenditures in manufacturing industry are associated with increases in Tobin's q ratios. But for service industry, the estimated coefficient of only IT expenditure is positive. For American firms, the estimated coefficients of both IT and advertising and R&D (ARD) expenditures in manufacturing industry are positive but the coefficient of only ARD is statistically significant. For service industry, the estimated coefficient of only IT expenditure is positive and statistically significant. The evidence may suggest that manufacturing industry uses both R&D and IT strategies to increase a competitive advantage but uses R&D strategy as a core competence. However, service industry uses IT strategy as a core competence to increase a competitive advatage.

  • Based on reviewing the literature and statistical year books on current projects that are targeting Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory, this paper aims to show concepts of Industry 4.0, and Smart Factory. Also it shows 5 projects for Industry 4.0 led by governments that worry over their low employment and productivity in main industrialized countries: Germany, China, Japan, the USA, and Korea. In addition it presents some problems which are very important but easy to be overlooked, especially on employment, and it makes three suggestions to solve employment problems. First, government should tax the profit which a company makes on reducing workers in spite of a high rate of profit through technology innovation. Second, to help small businesses to last longer, government should link major companies and small companies. Third, government, academic circles and the industrial world should take part in configuring consortia like American "Industry talent Consortium" to cultivate IT Talent.

  • The digital industry area based on digital technology is specialized and rapidly changing. This kind of change lead to a gap of understanding arises between the digital industry and the public. The digital industry is a trend that cannot be reversed, thus efforts to reduce the gap in understanding are necessary for positive social development in the future. This study aimed to find clues to reduce the gap in understanding by measuring the difference in perception between the public and the digital industry. To measure the difference in perception, this study applied the mutual orientation model proposed by McLeod and Chaffee(1973), As a result of the study, both groups agreed that the digital industry would make a positive contribution to the Korean economy in the future. However, it was confirmed that there was a possibility of mutual misunderstanding due to different views on the digital industry.
