Prior to the 2000s, internal control had not been among the high priority issues in the management's agenda. Since then, however, it has become one of the hottest issues, and has received a significant attention as the means of improving the transparency, sustainability, and competitiveness of a company. The objectives of this paper are to examine if there has been any noticeable changes in the level of internal controls of Korean companies before and after the 2010, and to analyze the underlying drivers and issues thereto. Accounting manipulation and moral hazard were among the factors to cause the Korean financial crisis in 1997 and 2008. Since then, the capital market has had a strong pressure on Korean companies to enhance the transparency of management and accounting while the government has made the laws, requirements, and recommendations to alleviate the moral hazard problems of management and enhance the accounting transparency. Both market and government have driven companies to put more priority on the reliability of financial reporting and the compliance of applicable laws and regulations. Thereby, the market and governmental forces has led companies to enhance the level of internal controls which contribute to the reliability of financial reporting and the compliance The pressure on companies to enhance the level of internal controls may be different across industries. The capital market and government experiencing the severe financial crisis in 1997 and 2008 put even more pressure on financial companies such as banks to upgrade the reliability of financial reporting and the compliance of regulations to the global level than on non-financial companies. A survey is performed on the changes in the level of internal controls of 54 major companies consisting of 10 financial and 44 non-financial companies in Korea. The survey results show that the average level of internal controls of Korean companies has noticeably improved and that the change in the level of control environment factor is higher than that of IT control factor. The analysis on the industry differences shows that financial companies increased the level of control environment factor more than non-financial companies did while non-financial companies upgraded the level of IT control factor more than financial companies did relatively. Among internal control categories, the most improved area since the economic crisis is "Risk Assessment." The global best practices for risk management have been developed primarily in the financial industry and then spread to other industries. The general level of control practices of Korean companies has been improving significantly, but still appears below the global advanced practices.
Logistics companies distinguish between medium-sized business and small business according to the size of enterprises. Of course, conglomerates are called global corporations. In this study, mid-sized companies over a certain size or more and those below are classified and decide the priorities among important factors to secure competitiveness in logistics companies are determined through AHP technique. Mid-sized companies are companies that can provide more than two logistics services. For example, they provide warehousing and transportation services in the same time. small companies are companies that can mostly provide one functional service. Warehousing, transportation, manpower, and information are listed as factors in this study. As a result of the study, medium-sized companies emphasized on the importance of transportation. When it comes to small companies, warehousing was emphasized as an important factor. Due to the simultaneous and contemporary service of warehousing and transportation in small-sized company, the reliable image of the company will be underestimated in case of delays in transportation. Competitiveness will also be weakened. Global corporations or conglomerates will start to consider relocating warehousing areas to others except for the central storage hub. They won't plan to invest directly, either. Therefore, it will be possible to secure competitiveness by providing the function of warehousing and to signed easily partnership.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of advertising expenses of fashion companies on sales from a financial viewpoint. To do so, the advertising expenses and the sales of 194 manufacturing and distribution companies in the fashion industry, as per the income statements posted by the individual companies, were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant correlation between advertising expenses and sales. The higher the advertising expenses, the higher the sales. Second, there was no statistically significant differences between companies with different sizes of sales. Third, the effects of advertising expenses on sales of fashion companies were statistically significant. The higher the increase of the ratio of advertising expenses, the higher the increase of the ratio of sales, and vice versa. This study differs from others in that it uses financial data, which has been neglected in previous studies regarding the fashion industry, to analyze the relationship between advertisement and sales. It will lend help to fashion companies seeking to rationally manage advertising expenses and come up with effective advertising policies.
Information and communication industry, which shows rapid growth rate, is now leading the global economic growth, contributing a ripple effect on general business and economic structure. It is said that information and communication industry enables swift economic growth taking a role as a basic industry of information-oriented society. Especially, rapid technical innovation promotes mutual growth of other related industries and it is technology-intensive. The purpose of this research is to analyze the management efficiency of information and communication industry using DEA method, and finally suggest numerical value for inefficient organizations to improve their efficiency. CCR-I, BCC-I efficiency and RTS(Returns to scale) of 29 companies engaged in information and communication industry was evaluated. With the results, I suggested model companies for benchmarking in information and communication industry. To summarize, 7 companies were selected with CCR-I efficiency rate 1, and 12 companies with BCC-I efficiency rate 1. RTS was finalized with 8 IRS companies, 10 DRS companies, and 11 CRS companies.
In the surveying of small-medium companies, it is shown that understanding QC methods is onething and applying them is another. To the extent of QC activities in KS license companies and Non-KS license companies, there is considerable difference between them. As a result of surveying, some actions must be taken to make QC activities lively in small medium companies. At first QC education and training should be changed to workshop-like education. Also true positive assistance and practical help from large companies which have relations with then, it is needed to suggest directions which small medium companies promote QC activities of themselves.
Franchising is one of the fastest growing types of business. It is already popular and well-known in the U.S., and has been growing in many other countries including Korea. Furthermore, many Korean franchising companies have expanded their business overseas actively. According to the data by the Ministry of Industry and Resource, 82 companies out of a sample of 500 franchising companies are already operating in many foreign countries and 48% of them have started their foreign business since 2006. This clearly indicates the fast growing current trend of foreign operation by Korean franchising companies. In spite of the fast growing trend of foreign expansion in the industry, academic research on internationalization of franchising companies is extremely difficult to find. Accordingly, academic research on the issue is necessary and urgent in Korea. Among the various research questions on internationalization of franchising business, this study intends to investigate the difference in organizational factors between the franchising companies doing foreign operation and those doing business only domestically. More specifically, this research has the following purposes. First, considering the lack of theoretical basis of previous studies, resource-based theory and agency theory are employed as the theoretical bases. Second, this study explains the difference in internationalization based on organizational factors such as company size, history and growth rate. Third, the five hypotheses regarding the difference in organizational factors are presented and tested empirically, which is the first attempt in the area of this topic. Finally, the study attempts to clarify the conflicting implications among theories regarding some organizational factos such as growth rate. As the theoretical background, resource-based theory and agency theory are discussed. According to resource-based theory, a firm can grow continuously when it has competence and resource, and also the ability to develop them. The competence and resource can include capital, human resource, management skill, market information, ability to manage risk, etc. Meanwhile, agency theory views the relationship between franchisor and franchisee as an agency relationship. In agency theory, bonding capability and monitoring capability are the two key factors which promote internationalization of franchising companies. Based on the two theories, a conceptual model is designed. The model consists of two groups of variables. One is organizational factors including size, history, growth rate, price bonding and geographic dispersion. The other is whether a franchising company is operating overseas or not. We developed the following five research hypotheses basically describing the relationship between organizational factors and internationalization of franchising companies. H1: The size of franchising companies operating overseas is larger than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H2: The history of franchising companies operating overseas is longer than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H3: The growth rate of franchising companies operating overseas is higher than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H4: The price bonding of franchising companies operating overseas is higher than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H5: The geographic dispersion of franchising companies operating overseas is wider than that of franchising companies operating domestically. Data for the analyses are obtained from 2005 Korea Franchise Survey data co-generated by Ministry of Industry and Resource, GS1 Korea, and Korea Franchise Association. Out of 2,804 population companies, 2,489 companies are excluded for various reasons and 315 companies are selected as the final sample. Prior to hypotheses tests, validity and reliability of the measures of size, history, growth rate and price bonding are examined for further analyses. Geographic dispersion is not validated since it is measured using nominal data. A series of independent sample T-tests is used to find out whether there exists any significant difference between the companies internationalized and those operating only domestically for each organizational factor. Among the five factors, size and geographic dispersion show significant difference, growth rate and price bonding do not reveal any difference and, finally, history factor shows conflicting results in the difference depending on how to measure it.

In conclusion, the results show that the size and history, which are the key variables in resource-based theory, have a significant relationship with internationalization and that geographic area, which belongs to agency theory, also has a strong relationship with internationalization. The results support the findings of extant research and, therefore, prove the usefulness of resource-based theory and agency theory in explaining internationalization of franchising companies. However, growth rate and price-bonding do not show a clear difference between the two types of companies. Accordingly, these two factors need further attention in the future research. Although this study shows meaningful findings theoretically and practically, it has several limitations. First, only organizational factors are considered even if there are various environmental factors influencing franchising firm's internationalization. Second, only being internationalized or not is considered. That is, modes of entry and the size of foreign operations are not included in the study. Third, internationalization strategy is often determined based on the desire for business expansion and higher profitability and egoistical reasons of the CEOs. However, this type of factors belonging to behavioral science is not discussed in the study. Finally, organizational ecology perspective is usefully applicable in explaining the survival and performance of internationally operating companies. Accordingly, research propositions based on this perspective need to be developed and tested.
It is essential to perform the software process improvement activities to reinforce the software quality. Some companies are trying to improve the software process capability by establishing and implementing the software process improvement strategies voluntarily. But, the whole software industry is not active yet in terms of software process improvement. In this paper, we surveyed 'Software Process Capability Level' of software companies, analyzed the strength and weakness of the companies and provided with systematic approaches to improve Software Process capability. So, this paper contributes that software companies vigorously focus on the Software Process Improvement and eventually have the global competitiveness in terms of software quality.
This study investigated the initial capital trend of newly-established fisheries companies during the Japanese occupation period. The initial capital size of fisheries companies provides information about the viability of the fisheries companies as well as the utilization intensity of fisheries resources. According to the analysis results, the average initial capital size of fisheries companies was larger in the enforcement period of "Chosun Company Ordinance" than in its abolition period. The initial capital size of the Chosun-capital fisheries company was smaller than that of the Japanese-capital fisheries company during the Japanese occupation period. The number of new fisheries companies funded by Chosun capital was less than the number of new fisheries companies funded by Japanese capital. Therefore, it could be seen that the Japanese fisheries companies had stronger dominance in the fisheries sector than the Chosun fisheries companies during the Japanese occupation period, and that Japanese fisheries companies were more viable than Chosun fisheries companies.
Purpose ESG(Environment Social Governance) activities of IT companies are very important for organizational development in that they can motivate employees to engage in job crafting by giving them a sense of purpose and meaning. There have been many studies on the positive impact of company ESG(Environment Social Governance) activities on financial performance, but unlike the existing financial performance approach, this study suggested that IT companies ESG activities can affect job crafting and job satisfaction of employee, using non-financial organizational variables. Design/methodology/approach This study, based on the related theoretical background, showed the relationship between ESG, job crafting, and job satisfaction, and it was proposed as a research model. A measurement model was constructed, and it was estimated and evaluated with LISREL 9.30, using data from IT companies employees, and it showed satisfactory data-fit of proposed model. The empirical results indicated that ESG(Environment Social Governance) take effect on job crafting, and job crafting take effect on job satisfaction. Findings This study provided several important implications in relation to the ESG(Environment Social Governance) that contribute to job crafting and job satisfaction for IT companies employees. It was confirmed that job crafting variable is a effective mediator linking ESG(Environment Social Governance) and job satisfaction.
Russia has a huge amount of energy resources. It is an attractive factor to countries which spend loads of energy. Republic of Korea is also one of large energy consumption countries. Therefore, It will be needed to raise energy cooperation with Russia. It's companies will increase trade focusing on the energy industry in the long term. Recently, However, Foreign companies should be careful when they enter the rapidly changing Russia market. In other words, companies will need a strategic approach to prepare the early case assessment and how to solve a possible dispute as they analyze cost and profit in business. This study is analyzing several dispute cases related in Russia. It presents some strategies for Korean companies such as dispute resolution method, arbitration institution selection method and so on. In addition, it proposes the introduction of the early case assessment for reducing a waste of time and cost. Furthermore, according as the importance of OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises is highlighted in international community, companies should prepare practical division to establish a system of responsible business conduct. Finally, they will have to get an advice and counseling from the Russia legal experts in the early stages of the contract.
