국내 소재 주요 다국적 기업들의 연구개발 패턴 및 시사점: 내국인 주요 기업들과의 비교 (The Comparative Analysis of R&D Patterns between Multinational Enterprises and Domestically Owned Firms in Korea and Its Implications)

  • There may exist differences in R&D patterns between multinational enterprises and domestically owned firms located in catching-up countries. This paper examines the differences in R&D patterns between different ownership in Korea. In order to do this, the paper has conducted the in-depth interview of the major multinational and local firms. The interviewed firms has been selected mainly from the telecommunication, semiconductor and display industries. The paper reveals that multinational firms tend to focus on sales-oriented R& while domestically owned firms are likely to cover the range of development, applied and basic research. The most outstanding difference lies in the length of R&D period. The domestic firms apparently turn out to conduct longer period R&D projects than multinational firms. In addition it is revealed that local firms need to develop their own capability, whereas foreign companies in Korea can acquire advanced technology and scientific knowledge from the R&D centers in their home countries. On the basis of the research findings, this paper discusses some implications and recommendations for Korea and other catching-up countries.

가족기업과 주가급락위험 (Family Firms and Stock Price Crash Risk)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the characteristics of family firms affect stock price crash risk. Prior studies argued that the opacity of information due to agency problem causes a plunge in stock prices. The governance characteristics of family firms can increase information opacity which leads to crash risk. Therefore, this study verifies whether family firms have a high possibility of stock price crash risk. We use a logistic regression model to test the relationship between family firms and stock price crash risk using listed firms listed on the Korean Stock Exchange during the fiscal years 2011 through 2017. The family firm is defined as the case where the controlling shareholder is the chief executive officer or the registered executive. If the controlling shareholder's share is less than 5%, it is not considered a family business. We found that family firms are more likely to experience a plunge in stock prices. This supports the hypothesis of this study that passive information disclosure behavior and information opacity of family firms increase stock price crash risk.

The Effects of Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Firm Performance: Empirical Evidence from Vietnam

  • This paper investigated the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and firm performance in Vietnam. Based on a dataset of 101 HOSE-listed manufacturing firms, the results showed that CEOs' knowledge capability, gender diversity, and board size are positively associated with firm performance, whereas firm age is negatively associated. These findings suggested that firms should consider enlarging the boardrooms, but to a certain extent to avoid an inverse-U-shaped decline of performance; furthermore, firms should promote women executives' presence in a boardroom for it brings greater cultural-diversity benefits and inhibits information asymmetry. Contrary, the aging process impedes firms' growth. It depreciates their values in terms of total assets, so managers must review their assets' net value after each working year to avoid such a hardship. However, the thesis constrains itself since it did not treat the TMTs' knowledge capability equally as the CEOs' and completely excluded their treatment. Besides, it did not regard the effect of external governance mechanisms such as the supply-demand relationship, customer behavior, market imperfections, and market concentration due to data unavailability. Based on the main findings, several suggestions are set forth for firms and managers to enhance performance and minimize a poor governance mechanism's adverse consequence.

  • 이 연구는 코스닥증권시장 벤처기업과 유가증권시장 일반기업의 특허활동, 즉 특허활동량, 발명기술의 고급정도, 종업원1인당 특허지표 등 3가지 특허활동을 비교 분석하고 벤처기업과 일반기업의 특허활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그 결과 일반기업의 특허활동이 벤처기업의 특허활동보다 경영성과에 더 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치고 있음을 밝혔다. 이러한 결과는 규모가 큰 대기업이 R&D 투자를 통해 유효특허등록을 많이 하고 이를 기업가치의 제고 수단으로 활용함을 의미한다. 따라서 다수의 벤처기업이 대기업 수준 이상의 고급특허를 많이 등록할 수 있도록 정책적 대응이 필요함을 시사하고 있다.

벤처확인유형을 중심으로 한 벤처기업의 성장 분석 (An Analysis of Venture Firms' Growth in Korea: Focusing on the Differences between 'Venture Certification Types')

  • 우리나라의 '벤처기업'은 법적 용어로서 벤처캐피털 투자기업('벤처투자기업')뿐만 아니라 연구개발기업과 정책자금 지원기업('기술평가 보증 대출 기업')들을 포괄한다는 특징을 지닌다. 본 논문은 벤처확인유형에 따른 우리나라 벤처기업의 성장에서의 차이를 분석하였다. 실증분석을 위해서 중소기업청의 1998~2010년 벤처확인기업 명단을 '한국기업데이터'(KED) 재무 데이터와 연계하여 사용하였다. 실증분석 결과, 벤처투자기업은 기업공개 확률이나 최초 벤처확인 이후 3년 및 5년이 경과한 시점에서의 매출 고용 성장률 모두에서 기술평가 보증 대출 기업에 비해 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 2003년 이후 신규 인증된 연구개발기업 역시 기술평가 보증 대출 기업에 비해 우수한 성장성을 보이고 있다. 이 결과는 '벤처기업'이라는 단일한 명칭에도 불구하고 이들 기업군은 상이한 속성을 지닌 기업들로 구성되어 있으며, 기업 성장 면에서 정책적 선별이 시장에 의한 선별에 상응하는 효과를 도출하지 못하고 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다. 이를 감안할 때 벤처지원정책은 벤처확인유형별로 상이한 기업군의 지원수요를 적극적으로 고려할 필요가 있으며, 명목상의 벤처기업 수 증가보다는 벤처캐피털 시장의 활성화에 정책의 초점을 맞추는 것이 바람직하다.

  • 중소규모업체가 한 나라의 경제에서 차지하고 있는 비중과 영향력은 매우 크다. 지금까지 경제시장에서 과소평가되어 온 많은 중소규모업체들이 제조업을 중심으로 한 해외시장에서 큰 두각을 나타내면서 기존의 이러한 시각에 큰 변화를 주고 있다. 특히, 국내시장의 한계를 벗어나려는 중소규모 건설업체 입장에서 급속도로 글로벌화 되고 있는 해외건설시장에서의 발전 가능성은 매우 잠재력이 크다. 그러나 아직까지 해외건설시장에 중소규모업체의 역할은 매우 미미한 수준이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 중소규모 건설업체의 해외진출을 활성화하기 위해 가능성과 의지가 있는 중소규모 건설업체를 그룹 별로 분류하여 해외진출 활성화 방안을 각 그룹 별로 제시하고자 한다. 1996년부터 2005년까지 ENR(Engineering News Record)지에 등록된 해외 선진건설업체의 해외공사 비중을 분석하고 해외건설시장에 기 진출한 국내 건설업체의 해외공사 비중과 법적 근거를 반영하여 국내 중소규모 건설업체의 분류 기준을 새롭게 제시하였다. 마지막으로 전문가 인터뷰 방식을 실시하여 새롭게 정의된 국내 중소규모 건설업체들의 각 그룹 별 해외진출 활성화 방안을 제시하였다.

A Test on the Pecking Order Theory of Financing : Considering Chaebol Affiliation

  • This paper tests the validity of pecking order theory by Myers(1977) and Myers and Majluf(1984) on Korean manufacturing firms listed in the KRX for the years of 1994 to 2003. We also want to see if there is any difference in financing behavior between chaebol affiliated firms and non-chaebol affiliated firms. We develop testable hypotheses from the idea that established relationship between bank and firm mitigates the problem of information asymmetry (Kang and Lim, 2001), and thus makes it easier for firms to raise funds through banks. The test result of the first stage shows that firms prefer cash reserves to debt financing, and prefer debt to equity. Chaebol affiliated firms are found to behave as if they already exploit internal capital markets. The second stage of the test carried out by dividing debt capital into bank loans and corporate bonds also shows a consistent pattern of financing behavior. Firms are testified to prefer cash to bank loans, bank loans to corporate bonds, and corporate bonds to equity. In this case chaebol affiliation seems to make firms behave as if they already establish internal capital markets. Further analysis shows that some, though not in every case, difference of ordering around the occasion of Korean financial crisis exists. It may be from the change of attitude of Korean firms to risk, or from weakened influence of internal capital market along with strengthened market power in the post-crisis period.

Stock Excess Return, R&D intensity and Market Concentration: A Study of IT Firms in India

  • This paper empirically investigates the role of R&D intensity on market concentration of firms using four key market valuation variables, namely (1) market share, (2) labor intensity, (3) firm age and, (4) firm's market value. The empirical tests use database at firm level for the Indian IT sector from 1999 to 2013 from the CMIE Prowess database. The results of the regression analyses partially support our hypothesis that R&D intensity positively influences firm's market value measure by the H-index. The test results are consistent with the hypotheses that R&D spending is more valuable for firms with larger market shares, higher labor intensity, and firms that are diversified.

  • In recent business environments, the competition among firms is shifting from the competition based on individual firm only to the competition based on alliance of firms. This is because it is not easy for a firm to perform all functions which consumers want. Thus, it is more effective to combine core competencies of different firms based on a strategic partnership. It is essential to establish a strategic partnership and this strategic partnership is a key success factor in PSS(Product-Service System) which combines products and services. In this paper, we propose a profit sharing model for PSS partnership. We first analyze customer's utility using Cobb-Douglas utility function and then propose the PSS profit sharing ratio considering functionalities and cost structures based on the combination ratio of PSS. This paper helps firms to develop partnership strategies for PSS.
