Characteristics of Infrared Blocking, Stealth and Color Difference of Aluminum Sputtered Fabrics

  • This study examines the stealth function of sputtered fabric with an infrared thermal imaging camera in terms of the thermal and infrared (IR) transmittance characteristics. Various base fabrics were selected, infrared imaging was performed, and infrared transmittance was measured. By infrared camera experiment it was found that the sample was concealed because it had a similar color to the surroundings when the aluminum layer was directed toward the outside. In addition, a comparison of the infrared thermographic image of the untreated sample and the sputtered sample in the laboratory showed that the difference in ${\Delta}E$ value ranged from 31 to 90.4 and demonstrated effective concealment. However, concealment was not observed in the case of the 3-layer (Nylon-Al-Nylon) model when a sputtered aluminum layer existed between two nylon layers. The direction of the sputtering layer did not affect the infrared transmittance in the infrared transmittance experiment. Therefore, it seems better to interpret the concealing effect in the infrared thermographic images by using thermal transfer theory rather than infrared transmittance theory. We believe that the results of this study will be applicable to developing high performance smart clothing and military uniforms.

  • 스텔스 기술은 레이더 및 적외선 시커와 같은 탐지기로부터의 탐지를 피하는 기술이다. 특히 IR 미사일은 항공기 자체의 열을 감지하기 때문에 적외선 신호에 의한 탐지는 더욱 위협적이며 적외선 스텔스 기술은 항공기 및 UCAV(Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle)의 생존을 보장하는데 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 UCAV 노즐 설계에 따른 공력 및 적외선 스텔스 성능 분석이 수행되었다. 수치해석 결과에 따르면 Double S형 노즐은 엔진의 고온부를 차폐할 수 있기 때문에 적외선 신호를 줄이는 데 효과적이다. 또한, Double S형 노즐에서 회전부 위치가 뒤쪽에 위치할수록 적외선 신호가 감소함을 확인하였다.

  • 현대 항공전에서 적외선 신호는 상대방 탐지에 있어 중요한 역할을 하며, 생존성 및 스텔스성 향상을 위해 저감되어야 한다. 특히 항공기 엔진 후류에서 발생하는 적외선 신호는 높은 강도를 가지며 파장이 짧아 대부분의 열 추적 미사일이 이러한 신호를 따라 탐지하게 된다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 엔진 후류에서 발생하는 Gas radiation 신호 측정 및 특성 분석을 수행하였다. 실제 항공기 터보팬 엔진을 모사하기 위해 마이크로 터보제트 엔진을 구성하였으며, 바이패스 비 조절을 통한 적외선 신호 저감 특성을 파악하였다. 이를 통해 각 파장 별 적외선 신호 특성을 분석하고 신호 저감 기술들에 대한 검증을 수행한다.

비음향 탐지억제를 위한 잠수함의 스텔스 적용 (Application of Submarine Stealth for Non-acoustic Detecting)

  • 잠수함이 가장 취약한 시기는 잠수함이 스노클이나 잠망경 운용을 위하여 잠망경 심도로 항해할 경우이며, 이때에는 비음향 탐지센서인 레이더와 광학, 사람에 의한 시각에 탐지될 확률이 매우 높다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 상황에서 탐지되는 취약성을 극복하고자 잠수함 마스트 및 잠망경 부분에 비음향 스텔스를 적용하고자 한다. 먼저 비음향 탐지센서에 대해서 조사하고, 그에 따른 스텔스 기법을 분야별 분석하여 최적화한 결과 다층형 구조로 선체표면부터 RAM layer, IR layer, Camouflage layer 구조로 각각 RAM layer는 자성재료인 페라이트계열로 3~5mm, IR layer는 Ceramic 또는 Nickel 계열로 1~2mm, Camouflage layer는 군청색 계열 페인팅을 제시하였다.

함정 적외선신호 민감도 해석을 통한 기상변수 영향에 관한 연구 (Study on Effectiveness of Ocean Meteorological Variables through Sensitivity Analysis of Ship Infrared Signature)

  • According to a study on improving ship survivability, an IR signature represents the contrast radiance intensity between the radiation signature from a ship and the background signature. It was found from applying stealth techniques to the process of ship development that the IR signature is remarkably sensitive and dependent on the environment. In this study, marine climate data for the sea near the Korean Peninsula were collected, and the marine meteorological environment in Korean waters was defined. Based on this data, a study on the sensitivity of the IR signature of target objects was performed using analytical methods. The results of the research indicated that clouds have important effects on the infrared signature, but the velocity of the wind and the humidity have only slight effects on the IR signature. In addition, the air and seawater temperatures had hardly any effect on the IR signature, but it is judged that additional study is needed.

거제도 인근해상에서 운용되는 함정의 적외선 신호 변화 특성에 대한 연구 (Study on Infrared Signature Variations of a Naval Ship Operated at sea Near Geoje-do Island)

  • It is essential to understand the infrared signature of a naval ship to survive against various missile attacks under variable environmental conditions. As guided missiles are developing to equip more accurate IR seekers, research works for countermeasure and IR stealth technology are strongly required. But challenging works are continuously suggested for predicting and analyzing IR signal status of naval ships to achieve low observable performance under various weather conditions, variable missions and developing threats. In this study, overall guidelines of setting design criteria for low observable ships are proposed by considering varying environmental conditions including daily and seasonal variations. Test and evaluation criteria for newly constructed ships for target and background temperature difference is proposed as a design criteria which can be predicted by change of condition and ship's speed. Through the proposed techniques and procedures, it is expected to establish the measurement and evaluation criteria by using temperature, IR Signal differences between the ship and the background.

함정 표면 적외선 신호에 대한 해양기상 영향분석 (A Study on the Infrared Signature of a Naval Ship under the Marine Climate)

  • A study on the IR(InfraRed) signature of a naval ship has been performed using well known IR signature analysis software, ShipIR/NTCS. Variations of the IR signature radiated from skins of a naval ship have been investigated according to the monthly averaged marine climate conditions. An unclassified destroyer model with and without applying the washdown system was applied to compare the influence on the signature under the background changes. The marine background models were created from the observed data by a buoy of Korea Meterological Administration(KMA). The sensitivity of the ship signature against the climate variables such as air temperature, sea temperature, relative humidity has been studied as well. The seasons which show extreme(max, min) skin signature change by whether the washdown is applied or not. The sensitivities of the air temperature and the sea temperature for a dry-ship reversed by applying the washdown on the ship surfaces.

공대공 적외선 미사일의 항력을 고려한 초음속 항공기의 피격성 분석 (Susceptibility Analysis of Supersonic Aircraft Considering Drag Force of Infrared Guided Missile)

  • An infrared-guided missile has been emerging as a major threat against combat aircraft due to its passive guidance characteristics and with recent advances in stealth technology. Hence, the infrared stealth technology and its effectiveness-evaluation technique become more significant than ever before. In this study, we applied missile aerodynamics to lethal range calculation which allowed more precise prediction. CFD analyses were newly involved in estimating drag force characteristics of an infrared-guided missile. Velocity profiles during flight period of the missile were constructed utilizing these drag characteristics and then incorporated into our in-house code to predict corresponding lethal ranges. The results showed that the present method can predict lethal range more appropriately than the previous one with constant velocity profile. As one of the results, if a fighter gains altitude more which reduces less drag of the attacking missile, then the lethal envelope increases significantly more compared to the lock-on envelope.

전자파/적외선 다중파장 흡수체의 설계와 초고주파 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Design and Microwave Characteristics of a RF/IR Multispectral Absorber)

  • In this paper, a design for a radio frequency(RF) and infrared(IR) absorber with metasurfaces is discussed in microwave frequency bands. The RF absorber includes double layers of metasurfaces to operate in S- and X-bands. Effects of sheet resistance of the metasurfaces and thicknesses of dielectric supporting layers on reflection responses are investigated. An IR stealth layer incorporates an array of conductive grids with slits to reflect IR signals but to transmit RF signals and visible rays. Periodicity of the grids and slits is studied for transmission responses in the X-band and a surface area ratio. Reflection responses of the RF/IR multispectral absorber are found to be lower than -10 dB and -16 dB in the S- and X-bands, respectively, from full-wave simulation. Finally, the RF/IR multispectral absorber is fabricated and its reflection responses are measured to verify designed performance.

IR 저감 설계가 무인전투기의 RCS에 미치는 영향 (Effects of IR Reduction Design on RCS of UCAV)

  • UCAV는 적진 중심으로의 침투, 공격 등 적대적 상황에서 임무를 수행하는 것을 목표로 한다. 일차적으로 적의 레이더에 포착되지 않아야 하므로 RF 스텔스 기술의 적용이 필수적이다. 최신 RCS 저감 기술이 적용된 대표적인 비행체로는 Blended Wing Body 형태의 X-47B UCAV이다. 본 연구에서는 X-47B와 유사한 모델 UCAV 형상을 설계한 다음, Ray Launching Geometrical Optics(RL-GO) 기법을 활용하여 모델 UCAV의 고주파수 영역에서의 RCS 특성을 분석하였다. 특히 IR 저감이 고려된 UCAV 형상이 RCS에 미치는 영향성을 조사하였다. 마지막으로 모델 UCAV의 공기 흡입구에 최적화된 RAM을 적용하였을 때의 RCS 변화를 분석하였다.
