  • We here outlined our study on the variations in intake of nutrients based on four season 7 consecutive day weighed diet records (WDRs) from 80 Japanese female dietitians in 1996 - 1997. Furthermore, we reviewed Japanese, Korean and international articles investigating variability in consumption of foods as well as nutrients. The relative contributions of variation for all nutrients by person were greater than those by day, week and season. Within individual variances were greater than that between individual variances, being generally observed in Korea and in the world. The ratios of within- vs. between-individual variations ranged from 1.3-26.9 in our study, the ratios being greatest in Korean, followed by Japanese and western people. Based on within individual coefficients of variation, minimal days necessary for estimating nutrient consumption per person within 10% (20%) of the true mean with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. They ranged from 10-35 (3-9) days for energy and major nutrients and 15-640(4-160) days for micro-nutrients. Two Japanese studies reported that the ratios for foods were as a whole greater than those for nutrients, except for cereals, rice and milk. (J community Nutrition 5(2) : 72-82,2003).

  • This study was performed as a basic research for establishing an objective quality evaluation method on whole bulbs of garlic. The size of a whole bulb of garlic, the number and the uniformity of complete individual garlics, and the existence of bad individual garlics in the whole bulb of garlic were selected as quality grading factors. Quality discrimination algorithms with machine vision techniques were developed and verified for the four factors based on morphological and physical features of whole bulbs of garlic. Based on the results, the size discrimination by the projected area of a whole bulbs of garlic suggested four grading levels and the algorithm for predicting the number of complete individual garlics based on the peaks on its projected boundary showed ${\pm}$0.78 prediction error. In addition, the uniformity represented by coefficient of variation could be divided into four levels, but the algorithm for discriminating the existence of bad individual garlics in a whole bulb of garlic was not effective.

  • Simulation technique for the fish behavior was applied to estimate fish school movement in the cage net. Individual-based fish behavior model (Huth and Wessel, 1991) was evaluated in a free area to understand the characteristics for the model, and the movement in the cage net was simulated by defining the fish reaction against the displacement of cage net. As a result, the distance to the net was not considerably changed and the space among fishes in cage net was slightly decreased by reducing the net space. Swimming area was, however, significantly affected by changing the net space and the relationship between swimming area and net displacement was theoretically estimated as y=-0.21x+1.02 ($R^2$=0.96). these results leads the conclusion that individual-based model was appropriated to describe the fish school reaction in the cage net and be able to use for evaluating the influence on cultured fish.

  • By the application of novel double detector system of micro-PIXE that can detect light elements (Z<14), we made an attempt to provide a thorough discussion on the aging processes of Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particle by reaction with sea-slat. The elemental spectra and maps obtained from the microbeam radiation of micro-PIXE to individual AD particles were useful for fractionating AD particles into both internally and externally mixed particles. A spatial distribution of elements in a minute domain of single particle obtained by scanning the microbeam irradiation enabled us not only to estimate the chemical mixing state of individual AD particles but also to presume their aging processes in both ambient air and cloud. By calculating the normalized micro-PIXE net count of elements, it was possible to classify individual AD particles into three distinct groups (i.e., (1) Aging type 1: AD particle coated by the gaseous Cl evaporated by the reaction between artificial acids and sea salt; (2) Aging type 2: AD particle mixed with sea salt but no additional reaction with artificial acids; and (3) Non-aged type) A relatively high transformation rate (63.3-75.9%) was shown in large particles (greater than $5.1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter).

  • Pulmonary hypertension may be associated with variable conditions such as the hyperkinetic state or pulmonary vascular obstruction. In these, stenosis of the individual pulmonary veins without any cardiac or vascular malformation is very rare. We experienced stenosis of individual pulmonary veins in a 10 months old boy who was admitted with recurrent dyspnea and cyanosis and then underwent angiogram and a lung perfusion scan.

  • Employee's agility is becoming a primary factor of improving individual work performance. Employee's agility refers to responsiveness or behavior of employees in the context of work environment change. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between employee's agility and work performance in the perspective of agility's influence factors(absorptive capacity, IT resource use, readiness to change) and knowledge-oriented leadership, A survey was conducted for gathering data (a total of 262 employees from 35 industrial organizations) to test the relationships. The results of analysis show that employee's agility is a driving force leading to individual work performance, that employee's absorptive capacity, IT resource use, readiness to change, and knowledge-oriented leadership are the significant influential factors of employee's agility, and that knowledge-oriented leadership strengthens the link between employee's absorptive capacity and agility. For theoretical and practical contributions, the research presents the grounds for arguments that employee's agility is employee's dynamic capability for individual work performance under work environment change, and that organizations trying to improve employee's agility need to explore employee's behavioral attitudes under individual, leader, and organizational dimensions. Limitations arisen in the course of the research and suggestions for future research directions are also discussed.

  • Purpose: This study examines the impact of individual reciprocal preferences on coalition formation. The reciprocal model considers a player's own payoff, the player's perception of others' payoffs, and others' perceptions of the player's payoff. Research design, data and methodology: A reciprocal model is built to illustrate how reciprocity influences individual decisions in a coalition game and its formation. The prediction is examined with experimental evidences from a dictator game and a membership game. Results: The theoretical result suggests that the coalition formation could be unstable due to negative reciprocal kindness. The experimental findings support that negative reciprocal kindness could lead players participating in a coalition, no matter their dominant strategies are. When subjects were essential to make contributions to a coalition, they were more likely to cooperate if they were treated badly. In contrast, when subjects were unnecessary, the reciprocal kindness could enhance cooperative tendencies. Conclusions: This study reveals that the reciprocal behavior could influence individual decisions and reshape the coalition formation. In terms of policy implications, this study has shown that coalition formation could be reshaped by reciprocal prefe rences. Due to the strategic and complicated decision process in an interactive environment, a comprehensive investigation of factors would be required in a climate coalition in practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of person-organization fit(PO fit) and person-job fit(PJ fit) on positive psychological capital at both team-level and individual-level. Present study intends to confirm the effectiveness through theoretical considerations and empirical analysis of positive organizational behaviors. This is expected to strengthen the basis of positive organizational behavior studies and provide the foundation to integrate positive organizational behavior to the actual organization. In order to test the hypotheses, the data were collected from multiple domestic organizations and composed 47 team-level and 244 individual-level data. For the analysis, hierarchical linear modelling(HLM) were conducted. The results of this study are as follows. PO fit and PJ fit had significant relationships with positive psychological capital at both team-level and individual-level. Also, in the relationship between the attitudes and behaviors of the members and positive psychological capital, the positive psychological capital was found to have significant effect on affective commitment and organizational citizen behaviors. The implications of this study according to the results as follows. Positive relationships of psychological capital with the antecedents and consequences variables, it is necessary for the management to magnify the strength of members in the actual operation at the organization level. Such the management of positive psychological capital can be suggested as a new approach method for achievement of the organization's goals and visions.

  • This paper proposes an individual charge equalization converter using selective two current paths for series connected lithium-ion battery strings. In the proposed equalizer, a central equalization converter acting as a controllable current source is sequentially connected in parallel with individual batteries through an array of cell selection switches. A flyback converter with a modified rectifier realizes a controllable current source. A central equalization converter is shared by every battery cells through the cell selection switch, instead of a dedicated charge equalizer for each cell. With this configuration, although the proposed equalizer has one dc-dc converter, individual charge equalization can be effectively achieved for the each cell in the strings. Furthermore, since the proposed equalizer would not allocate the separated dc-dc converter to each cell, such that the implementation of great size reduction and low cost can be allowed. In this paper, an optimal power rating design guide is also employed to obtain a minimal balancing size while satisfying equalization requirements. A prototype for eight lithium-ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented. Experimental results verify that the proposed equalization method has good cell balancing performance showing small size, and low cost.
