MPEG-4 Audio Decoding Technique using Integer Operations for Real-time Playback on Embedded Processor (휴대용 임베디드 프로세서에서의 MPEG-4 오디오의 실시간 재생을 위한 정수 디코딩 기법)

  • Some embedded microprocessors do not have an FPU(Floating Point Unit) due to a circuit complexity and power consumption. The performance speed of MPEG-4 AAC decoder on this hardware environment would be slower than corresponding speed for playing back of the decoded results. Therefore, irritating and high-pitched noises are interleaved in the original the audio data. So, in order to play MPEG-4 AAC file on such PDA, a new algorithm that transforms floating-point arithmetic to one with integers, is needed. We have developed a transformation algorithm from floating-point operation to integer operation and implemented the PDA's AAC Player. We also show the efficiency of our proposed method with the experimental results.

Design and Fabrication of High Energy Efficient Reconfigurable Processor for Mobile Multimedia Applications (모바일 멀티미디어 응용을 위한 고에너지효율 재구성형 프로세서의 설계 및 제작)

  • Applications for mobile multimedia are testing the performance limits of present day CPUs with variety. However, hardwired solutions are inflexible and expensive to develop. CPUs with flexibility have limitation of performance. So, the requirement for both ASIC-like performance and CPU-like flexibility has led to reconfigurable processor. Mobile systems require low power and high performance concurrently. In this paper, we propose reconfigurable processor for mobile multimedia with high energy efficiency. Reconfigurable processor with 121MOPS/mW is developed by 130nm CMOS technology. And the processor was simulated for energy efficiency with 539MOPS/mW by 90nm CMOS technology and effective use of instructions. And we tested its applications for multimedia field. We tested the case of inverse MDCT for MP3 and DF for MPEG4 and ME for H.264.

Implementation of MP3 decoder with TMS320C541 DSP (TMS320C541 DSP를 이용한 MP3 디코더 구현)

  • MPEG-1 audio standard is the algorithm for the compression of high-qualify digital audio signals. The standard dictates the functions of encoder and decoder pair, and includes three different layers as the complexity and the performance of the encoder and decoder. In this paper, we implemented the real-time system of MPEG-1 audio layer III decoder(MP3) with the TMS320C541 fixed point DSP chip. MP3 algorithm uses psycho-acoustic characteristic of human hearing system, and it reduces the amount of data with eliminating the signals hard to be heard to the hearing system of human being. It is difficult to implement MP3 decoder with fixed Point DSP because of it's broad dynamic range. We implemented realtime system with fixed DSP chip by using weighted look-up tables to reduce the amount of calculation and solve the problem of broad dynamic range.
