  • The MgO protective layer plays an important role in plasma display panels (PDPs). Our previous work demonstrated that the properties of MgO thin film could be improved, which were deposited by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). However arc discharge always occurs during the IBAD process. To avoid this problem, oxygen neutral beam assisted deposition (NBAD) is used to deposit MgO thin films in this paper. The energy of the oxygen neutral beam was used as the parameter to control the deposition. The experimental results showed that the oxygen neutral beam energy was effective in determining in F/$F^+$ centers, crystal orientation, surface morphology of the MgO thin film, and the discharge characteristics of AC PDP. The lowest firing voltage $(V_f)$ and the highest secondary electron emission coefficient $(\gamma)$ were obtained when the neutral beam energy was 300 eV.

  • Anti-Reflective (AR) thin film coatings of $SiO_2$ (n= 1.48) and $TiO_2$ (n=2.17) were deposited by ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) with End-Hall ion source and conventional electron beam (e-beam) evaporation to investigate the effect of deposition method on the refractive indicies (n) of the fIlms. Green-light generation using a GaAs laser diode was achieved via excitation of the second harmonic. The latter resulted from the transmission of the fundamental guided-mode wave of 1064 nm through periodically poled $LiNbO_3$. Large differences in the refractive indicies of each of the layers in the multilayer coating may improve AR performance. IBAD of $SiO_2$ reduced its refractive index from 1.45 to 1.34 at 1064 nm. Conversely, e-beam evaporation of $TiO_2$ increased its refractive index from 1.80 to 2.11. In addition, no fluctuations in absorption at the wavelength of 1064 nm were found. The results suggest that films prepared by different deposition methods can increase the effectiveness of multilayer AR coatings.

  • Optical properties of $TiO_2$ thin films prepared by ion-beam assisted deposition(1BAD) were investigated. The result shows that the refractive index of IBAD TiOL thin films measured by an envelope method is closer to that of the corresponding bulk than that of conventionally deposited $TiO_2$ thin films and the packing density of IBAD $TiO_2$ thin films measured by a vacuum-to-air spectral shift of films increases drastically. The vacuum-to-air spectral shift of an IBAD $(TiO_2/SiO_2)$ multilayer interference filter was negligible as compared to that of a conventional interference filter and so the IBAD filter is denser and more stable optically than the conventional filter. Also it is observed that the IBAD and conventional $TiO_2$ thin films are stoichiometric and amorphous.

  • Dental restorative materials must have the physical properties to withstand wear and corrosion. Base metal alloys possess better mechanical properties and lower price than the gold alloys. For these reasons such alloys have largely replaced the precious metal alloys. One aspect to con-sider is the release of metal substances to oral environment. The release of elements from dental alloys is a continuing concern because the elements may have the potentially harmful biological effects on local tissues. The purpose of this study was to minimize metal release on the nonprecious metal surfaces by ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) of titanium nitride (TiN) Ni-Cr-Be alloys with and without TiN coatings were secured in an wear test machine opposing ruby ball to determine their relative resistance to wear with loom, 200m, 300m and 400m sliding distance. And the corrosion behavior of the Ni-Cr-Be alloys with and without TiN coatings and 3 dental noble alloys have been studied. Potentiodynamic curves were used to analyse the corrosion characteristics of the alloys. The measurement of the released Ni and Cr ions was conducted by analysis of the electrolyte solution with atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results were as follows : 1. The critical sliding distance that wore down TiN coatings of $2.5{\mu}m$ thickness in this study condition was 300m. 2. Ion beam assisted deposition of TiN showed a good surface modification with respect to the properties of wear and corrosion resistance. 3. X-ray diffraction showed that the strongest peak of TiN is TiN(111) in the coatings. 4. The release of Ni and Cr ions from alloys measured by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy was reduced by ion beam assisted deposition of TiN.

  • Highly textured MgO template by ion-beam-assisted deposition(IBAD) was successfully fabricated using a continuous reel-to-reel(R2R) mode. To enlarge the deposition area, the previous IBAD system was modified into the system with 14-pass and five heating zone. Every processing step was carried out using this multi-turn IBAD system. The overall process consists of R2R electropolishing of a hastelloy C276 tape, deposition of $Al_2O_3$ diffusion barrier, $Y_2O_3$ seed layer, IBAD-MgO and homoepi-MgO layer. The IBAD-MgO templates were fabricated using the IBAD system with 216 cm-length deposition zone and 32 cm diameter ion source. The texture of MgO films developed during the IBAD process was monitored by in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction(RHEED) to optimize the IBAD process. Recently, 100 m long IBAD-MgO tape with in-plane texture of $\Delta{\phi}<10^{\circ}$ was successfully fabricated using the modified IBAD system. In this report, the detailed deposition condition of getting a long length IBAD-MgO template with a good epitaxy is described.

  • Statement of problem. Nano-scale calcium-phosphate coating on the anodizing titanium surface using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been recently introduced to improve the early osseointegration. However, not much is known about their surface characteristics that have influence on tissue-implant interaction. Purpose. This study was aimed to investigate microtopography, surface roughness, surface composition, and wettability of the titanium surface modified by the anodic oxidation and calcium phosphate coating using IBAD. Material and methods. Commercially pure titanium disks were used as substrates. The experiment was composed of four groups. Group MA surfaces represented machined surface. Group AN was anodized surface. Group CaP/AN was anodic oxidized and calcium phosphate coated surfaces. Group SLA surfaces were sandblasted and acid etched surfaces. The prepared titanium discs were examined as follows. The surface morphology of the discs was examined using SEM. The surface roughness was measured by a confocal laser scanning microscope. Phase components were analyzed using thin-film x-ray diffraction. Wettability analyses were performed by contact angle measurement with distilled water, formamide, bromonaphtalene and surface free energy calculation. Results. (1) The four groups showed specific microtopography respectively. Anodized and calcium phosphate coated specimens showed multiple micropores and tiny homogeneously distributed crystalline particles. (2) The order of surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, machined group, anodized group, anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group, and sandblasted and acid etched group. (3) Anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group was found to have titanium and titanium anatase oxides and exhibited calcium phosphorous crystalline structures. (4) Surface wettability was increased in the order of calcium phosphate deposited group, machined group, anodized group, sandblasted and acid etched group. Conclusion. After ion beam-assisted deposition on anodized titanium, the microporous structure remained on the surface and many small calcium phosphorous crystals were formed on the porous surface. Nanoscale calcium phosphorous deposition induced roughness on the microporous surface but hydrophobicity was increased.

  • Purpose: This study compared the effects of coating implants with hydroxyapatite (HA) using an ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) method prepared with machined, anodized, sandblasted and large-grit acid etched (SLA) surfaces in minipigs, and verified the excellency of coating method with HA using IBAD. Material and Methods: 4 male Minipigs(Prestige World Genetics, Korea), 18 to 24 months old and weighing approximately 35 to 40 kg, were chosen. All premolars and first molars of the maxilla were carefully extracted on each side. The implants were placed on the right side after an 8 week healing period. The implant stability was assessed by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) at the time of placement. 40 implants were divided into 5 groups; machined, anodized, anodized plus IBAD, SLA, and SLA plus IBAD surface implants. 4 weeks after implantation on the right side, the same surface implants were placed on the left side. After 4 weeks of healing, the minipigs were sacrificed and the implants were analyzed by RFA, histology and histometric. Results: RFA showed a mean implant stability quotient (ISQ) of $75.625{\pm}5.021$, $76.125{\pm}3.739$ ISQ and $77.941{\pm}2.947$ at placement, after 4 weeks healing and after 8 weeks, respectively. Histological analysis of the implants demonstrated newly formed, compact, mature cortical bone with a nearby marrow spaces. HA coating was not separated from the HA coated implant surfaces using IBAD. In particular, the SLA implants coated with HA using IBAD showed better contact osteogenesis. Statistical and histometric analysis showed no significant differences in the bone to implant contact and bone density among 5 tested surfaces. Conclusion: We can conclude that rough surface implants coated with HA by IBAD are more biocompatible, and clinical, histological, and histometric analysis showed no differences when compared with the other established implant surfaces in normal bone.

  • The magnesium oxide (MgO) protective layer plays an important role in plasma display panels (PDPs). In this paper, we describe the structural and discharge properties of MgO thin films, which were prepared by the ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) of oxygen as the protective layer of PDPs. The energy of the oxygen ion beam was used as the parameter to control the deposition. We found that the oxygen ion beam energy was effective in determining in structural and discharge characteristics. The lowest firing inception voltage, the highest brightness and the highest luminous efficiency were obtained when the MgO thin film was deposited with an oxygen ion beam energy of 300 eV. The crystallization of the MgO thin film was also measured by X-ray diffraction analysis, and the surface quality was measured by atomic force microscopy.
