Simplified finite element model of spark ignition (SI) engine to analyse combustion heat transfer is presented. The model was discredited with 3D thermal elements of global length 5 mm. The fuel type is petrol. Internal nodal temperature of cylinder body is defined as 21000C to represent occurrence of gasoline combustion. Material information and isotropic material properties are taken from published report. The heat transfer analysis is done for the instant of combustion. The model is validated by comparing the computed maximum temperature at the piston surface with the published result. The computed temperature gradient at the crucial parts are plotted and discussed. It has been found that the critical top surface suffered from thermal and the materials used to construct the engine parts strongly influenced the temperature distribution in the engine. The model is capable to analyze heat transfer in the engine reasonably and efficiently.
This is an experimental study on characteristics of engine performance and discharged materials in common-rail type diesel engine. The bio-diesel fuel is mixed with the diesel fuel in common use at the ratio of 20% or 100%. The diesel fuel and blended fuel is irradiated by ultrasonic wave energy. The diese1 fuel, blended fuel, reformed diesel fuel and reformed blended fuel by ultrasonic wave energy are applied to the experimental engine individually. The results are compared with one of the diesel fuel in common use and analyzed.
The goals of this research are to understand the regeneration characteristics in diesel particulate filter(DPF) using the cerium additive and throttling. The effects of throttling duration and spring tension of throttling valve were studied. Measurements were made on a 6 cylinder direct injection diesel engine and included pressure drop, filter inlet temperature, oxygen concentrations, and torque. The major conclusions of this work include; (i) the pressure drop is increased with increase of the engine load and the engine speed; (ii) the inlet temperature of the filter is reached $350^{\circ}C$ with certain engine operating condition which leads to sufficient temperature to regenerate with additive; and (iii) oxygen concentrations in the filter and engine torque during throttling operation are decreased by 2 percent and 36 percent, respectively, which are not critical about regeneration and vehicle operation.
Biodiesel is technically competitive with it and offers technical advantages over conventional petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel is an environment friendly alternative liquid fuel that can be used in any diesel engine without modification. In this study, (dP/dCA)max and heat release, emission characteristics with different fuel injection timings are compared between diesel fuel and biodiesel in the D.I. diesel engine with T/C. The engine was operated at five different fuel injection timings from BTDC 6deg to 14deg at 2deg intervals and with four different loads at engine speed of 1800rpm. The experiments in a test engine showed that ranges between low and high of (dP/dCA)max got narrower, as the engine load increased, BD blend rate increased, and fuel injection timing was delayed. Cumulative heat release increased with the advanced fuel injection timing. NOX emissions decreased with the delays of fuel injection timing.
This paper presents the spray atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector for the direct-injection gasoline engine. The gasoline sprays of the injector were minted into a pressurized spray chamber with a optical access at various ambient pressures. The atomization characteristics of fuel spray such as mean diameter, mean velocity of droplet were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. In order to investigate the effect of fuel injection pressure on the quantitative characteristics of spray, the global visualization and experiment of particle measurement in the fuel spray were investigated at 3, 5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different ambient pressure in the spray chamber. Based on the results of this work, the fuel injection pressure of fuel injector in gasoline direct-injection engine have influence upon distribution of the mean velocity and droplet size of fuel spray. Also, the influence of injection pressure on the velocity distribution at various measuring location were investigated.

Development of modern internal combustion engine requires more precise indicator. In the case of strain gage-strain tube type indicator, thermal expansion of the indicator's fixed part makes zero-shift in spite of water cooling. Therefore, the authors analyzed the cause of zero-shift phenomenon on strain gage-strain tube type indicator and proposed a new device to compensate the zero-shift of indicator by electrical method without detoriorating the dynamic charcteristic. As the results, we found that the zero-shift is varied linearlly according to temperature variation of the indicator's fixed part and appling a new device, we can improve the zero-shift of indicator about 0.63% (0.63 kg/$cm^2$) of full scale, though we got 10% of it without the device at the cylinder head operating temperature (c.a. $200^{\circ}C$).
Recently, the HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a HSDI diesel engine with a 4-valve type cylinder head. The four kinds of cylinder head were manufactured to elucidate the effect of intake port geometry on the in-cylinder flow characteristics. The steady flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate $(C_{f})$, swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (m,) were measured by the steady flow test rig and the unsteady flow velocity within a cylinder was measured by PIV. In addition, the in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized by the visualization experiment and these results were compared with simulation results calculated by the commercial CFD code. The steady flow test results indicated that the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is $13\%$ more than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased by approximately $15\%$. As a result of in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the position of swirl center was changed with crank angle. As the piston moves to near the TDC, the swirl center corresponded to the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform. In addition, the results of the calculation are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from diesel engines in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of agricultural diesel engines are recognized main cause which influenced environment strongly. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated agricultural D.I. diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel was reduced remarkably in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 50% at 2500 rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with biodiesel fuel (20vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}15%$) in an agricultural D.I. diesel engine.
Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine is of great economic importance. A motor-driven cylinder lubricator for Sulzer RT-flex large two-stroke diesel engines developed by authors is in need of improving the lubricating system to lubricate cylinder parts optimally by an electronically controlled quill device according to changes of engine load and revolution speed. In order to apply the developed accumulating distributor to an integrated cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled system as the third research stage, the lubricating system is improved in the electronically controlled quill device with a solenoid valve. In this study, the effects of lubricator revolution speed, driving pressure(or plunger stroke) and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate are investigated by using the integrated cylinder lubricator system with an accumulated distribution by the electronic control(I.C.S.), and the oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate of I.C.S. are compared with those of the motor-driven cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled quill system equipped with an accumulating distributor(E.D.S.). It is found that the oil feed rate of I.C.S. is smaller than that of E.D.S. due to the reduction of delivery velocity by the higher delivery pressure, and the variances of lubrication inequality rate for I.C.S. have become smaller than those of E.D.S. as the driving pressure in all experimental conditions increases, except for the driving pressure of 26 bar(plunger stroke 2 mm) at the cylinder lubricator speed of 120 rpm.
