  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) has excellent properties such as high thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity, whereas it has some disadvantages such as low sinterability and tendency to be hydrolyzed by moisture at room temperature. In the present work, the relative density, modulus of rupture and microhardness were examined for pressure-less-sintered AlN (synthetic and commercial) bodies which were prepared under the conditions of various sintering temperatures, holding times and additions of CaCO3 which showed the best effect on sinterability among the various sintering aids. As a result, the AlN bodies with 1.0 wt% CaCO3 (0.56wt% CaO) which were sintered at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 20 min showed good densification. In this case, the relative densities were 95.9% and 95.2%, and microhardnesses were 10.3 GPa and 9.8 GPa for synthetic and commercial AlN respectively. And as the holding time at 1800$^{\circ}C$ was increased from 10 min to 60 min, the relative density was increased from 91.9% to 96.5%. It was considered that impurities of metals and oxygen promoted the densification of AlN at low temperature (1600$^{\circ}C$).

  • In this study, materials for spectacle lens cutting were fabricated by hot-pressing and annealing SiC powders with $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$. A microstructure that consisted of uniformly distributed, large SiC grains and elongated SiC grains was developed by using ${\alpha}$-SiC powders. The microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). By hot-pressing and subsequent annealing, elongated ${\beta}$-SiC grains were grown via ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$ phase. This is caused the crack deflection as toughening mechanism. Typical hardness and fracture toughness of materials for spectacle lens cutting were 13.3 GPa and $4.8MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shock absorbing effect of 4 restorative materials and intramobile connector. The damping effect of four restorative materials used to veneer test crown rigidly connected to IMZ implant and subjected to an impact force was measured. These materials included a gold alloy(stabilor G) : a noble metal ceramic alloy(Degudent H) : porcelain(Duceram) : composite resin(Dentacolor). In addition, this study compared damping effect of same restoretive materials after using polyoxymethylene intramobile connector(POM IMC). The result of this study suggest that : In case of using metal IMC 1. Veneered composite resin(group IV) reduced the impact force by 75%, when compared to an equivalent thickness of porcelain(group III). Group IV reduced the impact force by 87% and 89%, respectively, when compared to Stabilor G(group I) and Degudent H(group II). 2. The impact force recorded was higher for the alloy with the higher elastic modulus.(Stabilor G, group I, Young's modulus 107 Gpa, versus Degudent H, Group II, Young's modulus 95 Gpa) 3. It took the longest time for composite resin veneered group(IV) to reach to peak force when compared group I, II, III. In case of using POM IMC 4. The mean impact force recorded were reduced by 79%(group I), 78%(group II), 69%(group III), 84%(group IV), respectively, when compared to using metal IMC. 5. The time required to reach the peak force were increased by 78%(group I, II) 87%(group III), 34%(group IV), respectively, when compared to using metal IMC>.

  • Effects at thermal treatment on the structural and electrical properties at DLC films have been studied. The DLC films were deposited by using a modified FCVA system as a function at negative substrate bias voltage, deposition time, and nitrogen flow rate. The thermal treatment on DLC films could be achieved by performing the RTA process at $600^{\circ}C$, 2min. Structural investigation on the thermal treatment effect was evaluated by inspecting the Raman spectroscopy, XPS, AFM, and internal compressive stress. In addition, the electrical properties of DLC films were evaluated by using the high current source and Lab-View data acquisition system. As the result at RTA treatment, $sp^3/sp^2$ ratio and internal compressive stress of the DLC films were decreased tram 5% to 22% and from 1GPa to 3GPa, and the $I_D/I_G$ intensity ratios was increased from 0.19 to 0.35. It was also found that the variation of internal stress of DLC films strongly agree with the variation of $sp^3/sp^2$ fraction and $I_D/I_G$ intensity ratio.

  • This paper describes a new carbon film that afford superlubricity (i.e, friction coefficients of 0.001- 0.005) and superlow wear rates (i.e., $10^{-11}-10^{-10}mm^3/N.m$) to sliding metallic and ceramic surfaces, when tested in inert test environments. The wear life of these films are more than 1000 km even under very high contact pressures (i.e., 1-3 GPa) and at a wide range of sliding velocities (i.e., 0.1 to 2 m/s). They are produced in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system at room temperature using highly hydrogenated gas discharge plasmas. Extensive research has shown that films grown in highly hydrogenated gas discharge plasmas (i.e., hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of 6 and above) provide superlow friction and wear coefficients. In full paper, specific conditions under which superlubricity can be achieved in carbon films will be discussed.and a mechanistic model will be proposed to explain the superlubricity of new carbon films.

  • In this study, a wet cleaning process, P II, using aqua-regia and sulfuric acid mixture with oxidant agent ($K_2S_2O_8$, $P_2O_5$, $KMnO_4$, $H_2O_2$ etc) is proposed to remove the metastable phase of graphite such as graphene and DLC for high quality synthetic diamonds. The process employed the conventional acid cleaning process (P I) as well as P I+P II to remove the graphite related impurities from the 200um-diamond powders synthesized at 7GPa-$1500^{\circ}C$-5minutes. The degree of cleaning after P I and P I+P II has been observed by naked-eye, optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and TGA-DTA. After P I+P II, the color of diamond became more vividly yellow with enhanced saturation with naked eye and optical microscopy analysis. Moreover, the disappearance of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) peak ($1440cm^{-1}$) observed by Raman spectroscopy confirmed the decrease in amount of remaining impurities. TGA-DTA results showed that the graphite impurities first started to dissolve at $770.91^{\circ}C$ after PI process. However, the pyrolysis started at $892.18^{\circ}C$ after P I+P II process because of the dissolution of pure diamonds. This result proved the effective dissolution of the metastable phase of graphite. We expect that the proposed P II process may enhance the quality of diamonds through effective removal of surface impurities.

  • TiAlCN coatings with various C contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The characteristics, the crystalline structure, surface morphology, hardness, and friction coefficient of the coatings as a function of the C content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), a microhardness tester, and a wear test. In addition, their corrosion behaviors in a deaerated 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at $40^{\circ}C$ were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results indicated that the $Ti_{14.9}Al_{15.5}C_{30.7}N_{38.9}$ coating had the highest hardness, elastic modulus, and a plastic deformation resistance of 39 GPa, 359 GPa, and 0.55, respectively, and it also had the lowest friction coefficient of approximately 0.26. Comparative evaluation of the TiAlCN coatings indicated that a wide range of coating properties, especially coating hardness, could be obtained by the synthesis methods and processing variables. The microhardness of the coatings was much higher than that from previously reported coating using similar magnetron sputtering processes. It was almost as high as the microhardness measured from the TiAlCN coatings (~41 GPa) synthesized using an arc ion plating process. The potentiodynamic test showed that the corrosion resistance of the TiAlCN coatings was significantly better than the TiAlN coatings, and their corrosion current density ($i_{corr}$), corrosion potentials ($E_{corr}$) and corrosion rate decreased with an increasing C content in the coatings. The much denser microstructure of the coatings due to the increased amount of amorphous phase with increasing C contents in the coatings could result in the the improved corrosion resistance of the coatings.

  • Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).

  • Detailed knowledge on maskelynite, a glassy phase of plagioclase found in shocked meteorites and impact craters, is essential to understand a shock metamorphism. Here, we explore an inhomogeneous shock metamorphism in the lunar meteorite Mount DeWitt (DEW) 12007 with an aim to understand the formation mechanism of maskelynite. Most plagioclase grains in the DEW 12007 partially amorphized into maskelynite with a unidirectional orientation. Back-scattered electron (BSE) images of maskelynite show a remnant of planar deformation fracture possibly indicating that the maskelynite would be formed by solid-state transformation(i.e., diaplectic glass). Plagioclase with flow texture is also observed along the rim of maskelynite, which would be a result of recrystallization of melted plagioclase. Results of Raman experiments suggest that shock pressure for plagioclase and maskelynite in the DEW 12007 is approximately 5-32 GPa and 26-45 GPa, respectively. The difference in shock pressures between plagioclase and maskelynite can be originated from 1) external factors such as inhomogeneous shock pressure and/or 2) internal factors such as chemical composition and porosity of rock. Unfortunately, Raman spectroscopy has a limitation in revealing the detailed atomic structure of maskelynite such as development of six- or five-coordinated aluminum atom upon various shock pressure. Further studies using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are necessary to understand the formation mechanism of maskelynite under high pressure.

  • Direct use of negative ions for modification of materials has opened new research such as charging-free ion implantation and new materials syntheses by pure kinetic bonding reactions. For these purposes, a new solid-state ce-sium ion source has been developed in the laboratory scale. In this paper, diamond like carbon(DLC) films were prepared on silicon wafer by a negative cesium ion gun. This system does not need any gas in the chamber; deposition occurs under high vacuum. The ion source has good control of the C- beam energy(from 80 to 150eV). The result of Raman spectrophotometer shows that the degree of diamond-like character in the films, $sp^3$ fraction, increased as ion beam energy increases. The nanoindentation hardness of the films also increases from 7 to 14 GPa as a function of beam energy. DLC films showed ultra-smooth surface(Ra~1$\AA$)and an impurity-free quality.
