The study examined the electrogeneration of hypochlorite ions (ClO-) via electrolysis of aqueous NaCl solutions using a dimensionally stable anode-type (DSA-type) electrode based on platinum and palladium oxides supported on titanium mesh (Ti/PtPd(10%)Ox). The electrogenerated ClO- was quantified on the basis of the absorption band at 292 nm (Aλ = 292) of the UV-Vis spectrum. The effect of initial pH, concentration of NaCl, cell potential difference and electrolysis time were investigated in this study. The results showed that the electrolysis of aqueous NaCl solutions increases the solution pH up to high values (≥ 8.0) that favor the formation of ClO- over chlorine or hypochlorous acid. The hypochlorite concentration increases significantly at pH values > 7.0 and shows a linear trend with increasing NaCl concentration and with increasing cell potential difference. When the cell potential and NaCl concentration are held constant, the maximum hypochlorite value during electrolysis depends on both the cell potential and NaCl concentration. The Ti/PtPd(10%)Ox anode favors the production of hypochlorite ions, making this anode a promising material for use in electrochemical oxidation of wastewater via an indirect mechanism.
The electrolyzed sterilizing water is useful functional aqueous solution, which is produced by electrolyzing aqueous solution. Electrolytic supplement such as salt or hydrochloric acid is added into tap water. Electrolyzed sterilizing water is classified as three types; strongly acidic electrolyzed water, weakly acidic electrolyzed water, and sodium hypochlorite water. In this study, preparation principles, advantages, and disadvantages of electrolyzed sterilizing water were analyzed. The technology trend in electrolyzed sterilizing water was analyzed based on patent application year, countries, main applicants, and each technologies.

Of all toxic inhalant exposures, chlorine is one of the most common toxic chemical inhalants. When acutely inhaled, it can be responsible for symptoms ranging from upper air way irritation to more serious respiratory effects. It can also deteriorate lung function and lead to death. Chlorine and its compounds such as chlorinated cyanurates and hypochlorites are commonly used in water disinfection. The chemical agents discussed in this article are sodium dichloroiso cyanurate and calcium hypochlorite which are the two most popular products for swimming pool chlorination. They are both strong oxidizing agents which are soluble in water. Between the above two alkali agents, acid-base interaction occurred and generated heat. And the acid drove the combination of hypochlorous and chloride ions to form chlorine gas. We have experienced, two boys who had inhalation injuries caused by an accidental explosion which occurred in a swimming pool by mixing two different chlorinating agents : sodium dichloroiso cyanurate and calcium hypochlorite. The children suffered from respiratory difficulties after the exposure. They both required intensive care management and one needed the support of mechanical ventilation.

The history of studies in biology regarding reactive oxygen species (ROS) is approximately 40 years. During the initial 30 years, it appeared that these studies were mainly focused on the toxicity of ROS. However, recent studies have identified another action regarding oxidative signaling, other than toxicity of ROS. Basically, it is suggested that ROS are reactive, and degenerate to biomolecules such as DNA and proteins, leading to deterioration of cellular functions as an oxidative stress. On the other hand, recent studies have shown that ROS act as oxidative signaling in cells, resulting in various gene expressions. Recently ROS emerged as critical signaling molecules in cardiovascular research. Several studies over the past decade have shown that physiological effects of vasoactive factors are mediated by these reactive species and, conversely, that altered redox mechanisms are implicated in the occurrence of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases ROS is a collective term often used by scientist to include not only the oxygen radicals($O2^{-{\cdot}},\;{^{\cdot}}OH$), but also some non-radical derivatives of oxygen. These include hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and ozone (O3). The superoxide anion ($O2^{-{\cdot}}$) is formed by the univalent reduction of triplet-state molecular oxygen ($^3O_2$). Superoxide dismutase (SOD)s convert superoxide enzymically into hydrogen peroxide. In biological tissues superoxide can also be converted nonenzymically into the nonradical species hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$). In the presence of reduced transition metals (e.g., ferrous or cuprous ions), hydrogen peroxide can be converted into the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (${^{\cdot}}OH$). Alternatively, hydrogen peroxide may be converted into water by the enzymes catalase or glutathione peroxidase. In the glutathione peroxidase reaction glutathione is oxidized to glutathione disulfide, which can be converted back to glutathione by glutathione reductase in an NADPH-consuming process.

This study has made the electrode that is coated zirconium oxide on the titanium by ESD(Electrostatic spray deposition) coating methode. It has investigated the effects of the etching method of a Ti substrate as the preparation, making of zirconium oxide film and electrochemical characteristics of the electrode that is etched on the titanium. The HCl etching develops a fine and homogeneous roughness on the Ti substrate. Fabrication and material properties of the metal oxide electrode, which is known to be so effective to generate ozone and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as power oxidant, were studied. A proper metal oxide material is focus zirconium oxide through reference. A coating method to enhance the fabrication reproducibility of the zirconium oxide electrode was used ESD coating method by zirconium oxychloride. Zirconium oxide films on the Ti substrate were tested using SEM, XRD, Cyclic voltammetry.
This study was conducted to propose measures of water quality management as the water criteria for waterscape facilities which have been highlighted as alternatives to wading pools in summer season was legislated. The number of public waterscape facilities has reached 290 sites in Gyeounggi province and 971 sites in South Korea in 2017. The water tank capacity of 80.3 % public waterscape facilities was less than $100m^3$. Facilities with disinfection system were only 6.5 % and facilities with filtration function were also very low at 6.9 %. Most of the waterscape facilities, about 93%, are expected to be vulnerable to complying with revised water quality criteria because they have to be disinfected by handling. Chlorine disinfectants, which are more persistent than ozone or ultraviolet sterilization methods, are more preferred. However, care should be taken when adding disinfectans because hypochlorous acid, which is an effective component of chlorine disinfectant, remains after the disinfection, but it is easily decomposed with time. For this study, ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ park floor fountain with a capacity of $63m^3$ was selected and the amount of free residual chlorine concentration was measured by injecting a certain amount of chlorine bleach. As a result, it took 5 hours to decrease from the water quality standard of 4 mg/L to 0.04 mg/L. If the waterscape facility is operated for 7 to 8 hours, the chlorine bleach should be re-injected after 5 hours. In addition, the problem of pH increase due to the input of chlorine disinfectant is expected, and the neutralization method using vinegar was proposed.

In this study, we investigated the effect of sterilization and the neutralization of treated ballast water using seawater electrolysis. The electrolysis apparatus has a cation-selective membrane for passing the cation and a titanium electrode in each cell. We examined the sterilization effect after an incubation period of 24 hr. The oxidation reaction during electrolysis caused, the solution to become strongly acidic due to the generation of a hydroxyl group, and the oxidation reduction potentials(ORP) was increased to 800 - 1200mV. After the reduction reaction, the solution became alkaline(pH 9 - 12), and ORP was decreased to - 900 - - 750 mV. It might be possible to control the pH of ballast water through electrolysis. In addition, we demonstrated the effects of sterilization of ballast water containing generated hypochlorous acid using electrolysis under high ORP condition.
The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant profiles of genistein and other isoflavonoids. The reactivity of genistein towards stable radical and reactive oxygen species including ${\bullet}\;ABTS^+$, ${\bullet}{O_2}^-$, $H_2O_2$ and HOCl has been investigated, and the effects were compared with other isoflavonoids and antioxidants. All the tested isoflavonoids showed remarkable ${\bullet}\;ABTS^+$ scavenging activity and genistein was more potent than BHT and ascorbic acid. Genistein was more effective in scavenging hypochlorous acid than superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. At $10\;{\mu}M$ concentrations of genistein and genistin showed about 90% inhibitory effect on HOCl, while BHT and ascorbic acid showed lower than 50% inhibitory effect. Moreover, genistein could inhibit plasmid DNA cleavage, protein degradation and cell death from HOCl attack, while daidzein, BHT and ascorbic acid could not protect them effectively. These results suggest that genistein is a more potent radical scavenger than other isoflavonoids, and it can remarkably reduce cellular damage induced by HOCl.
Background: Disinfection is essential to provide drinking water from a water source. The disinfection process mainly consists of the use of chlorine and ozone, but when chlorine is used as a disinfectant, the problem of disinfection by-products arises. In order to resolve the issue of disinfection by-products, electro-chlorination technology that produces chlorine-based disinfectants from salt water through electrochemical principles should be applied. Objectives: This study surveys the possibility of optimally producing active chlorine from synthetic NaCl solutions using an electro-chlorination system through RSM. Methods: Response surface methodology (RSM) has been used for modeling and optimizing a variety of water and wastewater treatment processes. This study surveys the possibility of optimally producing active chlorine from synthetic saline solutions using electrolysis through RSM. Various operating parameters, such as distance of electrodes, sodium chloride concentration, electrical potential, and electrolysis time were evaluated. Results: Various operating parameters, such as distance of electrodes, sodium chloride concentration, electrical potential, and electrolysis time were evaluated. A central composite design (CCD) was applied to determine the optimal experimental factors for chlorine production. Conclusions: The concentration of the synthetic NaCl solution and the distance between electrodes had the greatest influence on the generation of hypochlorite disinfectant. The closer the distance between the electrodes and the higher the concentration of the synthetic NaCl solution, the more hypochlorous acid disinfectant was produced.
This study was performed to develop treatment method for reducing microbial contamination on Daruma (a semi-processed product of seasoned and dried squid) by combination of strong acidic hypochlorous water (SAHW) and ultrasonic waves (UW). The available chlorine concentration, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and pH of SAHW were $69.67{\pm}0.58ppm$, $1071.33{\pm}4.16mV$ and 2.79, respectively. The 1.49 log CFU/g of viable cell count and 1.32 log CFU/g of Staphylococcus aureus was reduced, and Escherichia coli was reduced below detection limit when the Daruma was treated with 20 times (w/v) of sodium hypochlorite solution (SHS) for 120 min. The 3.62 log CFU/g of viable cell count and 3.22 log CFU/g of Staphylococcus aureus was reduced, and Escherichia coli was reduced below detection limit when the Daruma was treated with 20 times (w/v) of SAHW for 120 min. The antibacterial effects of SAHW were stronger than those of SHS at same available chroline concentration. SAHW treatment after washing strongly alkalic electrolyzed water (SAEW) showed better bactericidal effects than SAHW treatment only. The 4.0 log CFU/g of viable cell count was reduced, S. aureus was reduced below regulation limit (Log 2.0 CFU/g), and E. coli was reduced below detection limit when the Daruma was treated with 20 times (w/v) of SAHW for 90 min after washing with 20 times (w/v) of SAEW for 60 min. The viable cell number was reduced below detection limit and S. aureus was reduced below regulation limit when the Daruma was treated with 20 times (w/v) of SAHW for 60 min in ultrasonic washer. E. coli was reduced below detection limit when the Daruma was treated with 20 times (w/v) of SAHW for 10 min in ultrasonic washer. These results suggest that combination of SAHW and UW may be a good technique to reduce the microbial contamination in daruma.
