  • Pharmacological effects of water extracts of Lycii Fructus, Lycii Folium and Lycii Cortex Radicis from Lycium chinensis were investigated. Lycii Folium significantly protected the hepatic function from damages orally caused by $CCl_4 $administration in mice and had a strong hypoglycemic effect in hyperglycemic mice induced by streptozotocin. Lycii Fructus decreased the blood pressure rise associated with the growth of normal rats. Lycii Cortex Radicis had a strong hypoglycemic effect in hyrerglycemic mice induced by streptozotocin. Also, hypolipidemic effects in hyperlipidemic rats induced by 1% cholesterol fed-diet and 75% fructose were significantly observed by oral administration of water extracts of Lycii Fructus, Lycii Folium and Lycii Cortex Radicis.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate lipid-lowering and antioxidant effects of Artemisia capillaris(A. capillaris) using a model of hyperlipidemic rats induced by poloxamer-407. Methods: Rats were previously treated by A. capillaris water extract, and intraperitoneally injected by poloxamer-407 to induce hyperlipidemia. Parameters of serum lipid and oxidative stress biomarkers were determined. Results: 1. A. capillaris ameliorated the elevation of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and MDA level. 2. A. capillaris ameliorated the reduction of serum TAC and SOD activities. 3. A. capillaris ameliorated the reduction of serum GSH and GSH-reductase level. Conclusions: According to these results, A. capillaris can be used to treat hyperlipidemia or as basis for making new drugs for treating hyperlipidemia in the future.

  • The hypolipidemic effect of exe-polymer produced in submerged mycelial culture of Hericium erinaceus (HE), Auricularia auricula-judue (AA), Flammulina veluripes (FV), Phellinus pini (PP), and Grifola frondosa (GF) was investigated in dietary-induced hyperlipidemic rats. The animals were administered with exe-polymers at the level of 100 mg/kg body weight daily for four weeks. Hypolipidemic effect was achieved in all the experimental groups, however, HE exo-polymer proved to be the most potent one, which significantly reduced the plasma triglyceride ($28.9\%$), total cholesterol ($29.7\%$), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ($39.6\%$), phospholipid ($16.0\%$), and liver total cholesterol ($28.9\%$) level, when compared to the saline administered (control) group. The results of the present investigation strongly demonstrate the potential of HE exe-polymer in combating hyperlipidemia in the experimental animals.

  • The hypolipidemic effect of the exe-biopolymer (EXBP) and endo-biopolymer (ENBP) produced from a submerged mycelial culture of Ganoderma lucidum was investigated in dietary-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Hypolipidemic effects were achieved in both the EXBP- and ENBP-treated groups, however, the former proved to be more potent than the latter. The administration of the EXBP (100 mg/kg body weight) substantially reduced the plasma total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid levels, and atherogenic index by 31.0, 39.0, 35.4, 28.1, and 53.5%, respectively, when compared to the control group. The EXBP also lowered the liver total cholesterol, triglyceride, and phospholipid levels by 22.4, 23.1, and 12.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and ratio of HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol were significantly increased by as much as 24.2% and 47.6%, respectively.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Korea leek on plasm lipids and platelet aggregation in hypercholesterolemic rats fed different dietary fat. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with hyperlipidemic diet for 4 weeks in order to induce hyperlipidemia, followed by the feeding of experimental diets for additonal 4 weeks. We used three kinds of lipid(perilla oil, corn oil and lard). Korean leek of experimental diets was prepared by drying and milling. Powdered Cellulose and powdered Korean leek were added to experimental diets at the level of 5% (w/w). Serum concentrations of total lipid, total triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol decreased in the order of perilla oil, corn oil and lard. Korean leek significantly decreased total lipid, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, platelet count, prothrombin time, and platelet aggregation in rats fed a lard diet. The present observation indicates that Korean leek might be helpful for the prevention and threapy of hyperlipidemia and platelet aggregation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Meristotheca papulosa on lipid concentration of serum and liver in rats fed high fat diet for 4 weeks. Experimental groups ere divided into normal group (5% corn oil), high fat diet group (5% corn oil+20% lard), high fat diet and 5% or 10% Meristotheca papulosa treated group. The weights of kidney, heart and tests were not significantly different among the group, but weight of liver was significantly decreased by supplement of Meristotheca papulosa (10%). The contents of serum total lipid, trigly-ceride, total cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesterol ester and atherogenic index were decreased, while HDL-cholesterol was increased by Meristotheca papulosa supplementation compared to high fat diet group. Meristotheca papulosa supplement has obvious effects on lowering hepatic total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol. Our findings suggest that Meristotheca papulosa supplement can improve lipid metabolism in high fat fed rats.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of dietary crab shell powder on lipid metabolism in diet induced hyperlippidemic rats. Sixteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups and fed 20% (w/w) carb shell powder supplemented diet for 4 weeks. Energy intake and weight gain were lower in experimental group than in control group. Concentrations of plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and atherogenic index (AI) were decreased and concentration of HDL-cholesterol was increased by crab shell powder supplementation. Concentrations of liver total cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly lower in experimental group. The crab shell decreased triglyceride and cholesterol concentration in plasma and liver, and increased bile acid excretion in feces. Therefore, the crab shell powder is assumed to exhibit function of chitin or chitosan that effects on lipid metabolism and cholesterol reabsorption.

  • This study was designed to investigate the hyperlipidemia-healing effect of aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang(麻黃二門湯) and it was performed on the hyperlipidemia of rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. We prepared two types of hyperlipidemia model in rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. The amount of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL -cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, free fatty acid, the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione were measured. The aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang showed significant decreasing effects on total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, triglyceride in the both model. And it showed significant increasing effects on HDL-cholesterol, the activity of SOD in both model. These results suggest that aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang has healing efficacy on hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339.
