Objectives: This study aimed to provide the measures for improving the self-directed learning ability and the reference data for substantializing the educational programs by verifying the main factors affecting the self-directed learning ability of dental hygiene students in reality when the learners' autonomy is emphasized than ever. Methods: From June 20 to July 4, 2022, an online survey was conducted targeting total 218 dental hygiene students. The collected data was analyzed by using the SPSS Program Version 22.0. Results: First, in the results of analyzing differences in detailed items of self-directed learning ability according to the general characteristics, the 'students who entered the department of dental hygiene by considering their aptitude and interest' showed higher results than the 'students who entered the department by considering their high school record'. Second, when the academic efficacy, study immersion, and problem-solving ability of dental hygiene students were higher, their self-directed learning ability was also high. Third, the factor that had the greatest effect on self-directed learning ability of dental hygiene students was problem-solving ability, which was followed by academic efficacy and study immersion. Conclusion: Putting together the results above, in order to cultivate the problem-solving ability of dental hygiene students, it would be necessary to operate the problem-solving-centered simulation course that could foster critical thinking, interactions with others, and creative approach and solution to problems in dental medical site. It would be also possible to improve their academic efficacy by applying the learning mentoring & one-to-one learning counseling program, and also strengthening proper feedbacks for learners. Moreover, the study immersion could be strengthened by developing and operating the emotion-based learning motivation program & learning coaching program through the process of verifying the potential and growth needs of learners, exploring one's own resources through learning diagnosis/introspection, and exploring the career-related vision for strengthening the learning motivation, which could have positive effects on the improvement of self-directed learning ability.
Background: This study was aimed at investigating factors influencing the selection of dental institutions for implant surgery among young adults (age: 20-64 years) and identifying differences in these factors according to general characteristics. Methods: We conducted an internet survey for approximately 2 months, from April to July 2022, and analyzed data from a total of 128 people. Dental institution selection factors included three items of convenience of transportation, five items of physical environment, three items of image of institution, five items of image of dental staff, five items of dental service, and four items of basic dental elements. The importance score for each item was investigated on a five-point scale. Results: The importance score for each dental institution selection factor was the highest for dental service (4.42 points), followed by basic dental element (4.00 points), physical environment (3.89 points), image of institution (3.81 points), convenience of transportation (3.76 points), and image of dental staff (2.78 points). The importance score for each item was the highest for dentists' technique, followed by cleanliness, reliability, and dentists' attitude. Women had higher average scores for all factors compared to men, with statistical significance in scores for convenience of transportation, physical environment, image of institution, dental service, and basic dental elements (p< 0.05). Conclusion: To attract patients seeking implants to a dental institution, attention should be paid to the patients' institution selection factors. In addition, the environment of a dental institution should be created in such a way that it favors patients' selection factors.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to confirm whether there is a factor to affect the evaluation of fit test of a 2nd class half masks using a OPC test method. Methods: Total 34 adults including Males and Females were tested using OPC-based fit testing equipment while wearing a 2nd class half filtered mask. Results: 1. The result of measuring face dimensions using different tools such as a 3D scanner and digital calipers revealed that the variation of lip width was not statistically significant because there was only a difference of about 4 mm. However, it showed that a difference in face length was statistically significant enough with 10 mm(p<0.000). 2. The fit factor for each exercise stage according to gender was the highest at 124.54(p<0.001) in Step 3, and the fit factor was the lowest at 73.75 in Step 1. 3. In the evaluation of the degree of fit factor according to gender, female passed 67.44%, which was higher than the value in male(p<0.038). 4. The acceptance rate of the group having a face length of shorter than 110 mm was 91.67%. On the other hand, the acceptance rate of the group with a face length of longer than 110 mm was 47.27%(p<0.000). 5. The fit test was possible because the fit factor with 2nd class half masks corresponding to FFP1(Filtering Face Piece 1) was passed 55% or more. Conclusions: The test results showed that using a 2nd class half filtered mask, it is important to wear a properly designed mask so that face size does not affect the fit factor.

This study is conducted with the aim of providing basic data for oral health improvement of pregnant woman and development of oral health education program by analyzing factors influencing the oral health related behavior of pregnant woman applying health belief model which is theoretical model of explaining individual's behavior change. For 217 expectant mothers who visited 8 obstetrics and 1 maternity class located in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon from August 1 to 31, 2014, data analysis was implemented using self-administered questionnaire. Before the completion of self-administered questionnaire, the subjects were fully informed of explanatory note and consented on taking part in the research for the consideration of ethical aspect. Collected materials were treated by PASW Statistics ver. 18.0 program and following results were acquired. Health belief factor which infuences oral health related behavior of pregnant woman resulted that perceived severity influences on oral examination during pregnancy and dental treatment during pregnancy, and perceived benefits influences on oral examination during pregnancy, and perceived barriers on toothbrushing after having a snack, toothbrush with rotation method and oral examination during pregnancy, and self-efficacy influences on use of oral hygiene products after toothbrushing and oral examination during pregnancy. With these research results, I suggest that perceived severity of health belief factor, perceived benefits, perceived barrier and self-efficacy influence oral health related behavior of pregnant woman. And specific oral health education program for pregnant woman is necessary to increase perceived severity of pregnant woman, perceived benefits and self-efficacy and to reduce perceived barriers.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of social characteristics and self leadership on stress coping method in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 436 dental hygiene students in J area from November 10 to December 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted ofsocial characteristics of the subjects, self leadership, and stress coping method. The reliability was evaluated by Cronbach alpha. Data were analyzed by frequency, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 12.0 statistical package program. The self leadership was developed by Mans and adapted and modified by Kim and Park. The leadership included 18 questions of self expectation, rehearsal, goal setting, self reward, self criticism, and constructive area. The stress coping method was developed by Folkman and Lazarus, and adapted and modified by Park. The stress coping method included 24 questions of problem focused coping, seeking social support, emotion focused coping, and wishful thinking. Results: The best stress coping method was wishful thinking and the score was 2.81. The priority order of stress coping method included social support, problem focused coping, and emotion focused coping. The self-expectation, goal setting, self-criticism proved to be highly relevant factors. The explanation power of stress coping method was 29.1 percent. The self expectation, rehearsal, self reward, and self criticism were passive coping methods and the explanation power was 15.4 percent. Conclusions: The self leadership is the most important factor to fulfill the interpersonal relationship abilities, major satisfaction, and satisfaction with clinical practice. The self leadership leads to stress coping ability.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of music intervention on the patient's fear and anxiety during scaling. Methods: 360 patients who had visited W University dental hygiene laboratory were selected as study subjects and divided into experiment group and control group. Results: Study results showed that the control group (71.9%) and the experimental group (75.1%) had experiences avoiding dental treatment due to fear. In the control group (37.6%) and experimental group (40.6%), the highest influencing factor was the sound of machine and followed by pain. The experimental group preferred classical music, followed by pop songs, trot music and instrumental music. In the experimental group (83.3%), fear and anxiety were alleviated by music, and 77.9% of the patients mentioned they would recommend music for scaling to other patients. There was an interaction effect (p=0.014) between the groups before and after the measurement of the lowest blood pressure. There was a significant difference in pulse before and after pulse measurement (p=0.000). There was a significant difference in respiration between groups (p=0.042) and before and after respiration (p=0.030). Conclusions: Study results showed that music intervention that utilizes music during scaling showed significant effects on the alleviation of fear and anxiety, affecting Pulse number among vital signs. Therefore, more systematic program is to be required to alleviate dental fear and anxiety with music therapy not only for scaling, but also for dental clinic in the future.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the professors, who teach the dental hygiene program in Korea, on the awareness of the research ethics education check. And attempt to provide and promote a basic foundation for future research ethics education Methods : Questionnaire survey was carried out targeting 119, who teach the dental hygiene program. The collected data was performed frequency & percentage, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results : 1. As recognition about research ethics education needs, they expressed the biggest recognition that research ethics education is required($3.66{\pm}0.57$) 2. Regarding the correlation between students needs research ethics education and interested research ethics education had a statistically significant correlation of r=0.381 which was the highest correlation factor. 3. Research ethics education taking institutions, 39.4% respondents experienced the biggest national research institutes. 4. Between general characteristics and research ethics education recognition level, they were statistically significantly different with age and major course(p<0.05). 5. The affecting factors on the research ethics education were teaching career and number of articles published as the first author, explained 12.8%(p<0.001). Conclusions : Research ethics education is desperately needed. Therefore I will insist the case based approach in the research ethics education program with the format of a stand course.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the related factors to dental fear in some adults. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 320 adults in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from April to June, 2013. Except 14 incomplete answers, data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 questions), dental fear related factor(18 questions), distrust for dentist(15 questions), and distrust for dental hygienist(11 questions). The instrument for dental treatment fear was Dental fear Survey(DFS) adapted from Kleinknecht and partly modified by Choi. Out of 20 questions, 18 questions were reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher dental fear. Cronbach alpha was 0.959 in the study. The distrust for dentist and dental hygienist was adapted from Choi and reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher distrust for dentist and dental hygienist. Cronbach alpha was 0.937 in distrust for dentist and 0.874 in distrust for dental hygienist in the study. Results: Those who experienced dental pain tended to have dental fear. The reasons for dental fear were as follows; bad breath(2.96 out of 5 points, hereafter represented as of 2.96/5), dental caries(2.88/5), missing teeth(2.87/5) and tooth pain(2.77/5). The distrust for the dentist was the main dental fear in the adults. Conclusions: The dental fear was closely related to gender, experience of dental pain, oral symptoms and distrust for the dentist. As the psychological pain in the patients was mainly influenced by the trustful atmosphere, it is necessary to make the patient easy before treatment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-efficacy and occupational value in major satisfaction in dental hygiene students. The subjects were 236 dental hygiene students in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do. They filled out self-reported questionnaires that consisted of general characteristics of subject, self-efficacy, occupational value, and major satisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0 and Amos. V18. Sophomore's curriculum satisfaction and perceive satisfaction were higher than freshman's. Group of high self-efficacy was higher than average and low groups in major satisfaction. Group of internal occupational value was higher than group of external and neutral occupational value in curriculum satisfaction, perception satisfaction, and total major satisfaction. The most effective factor on major satisfaction of dental hygiene students was self-efficacy.

Objectives : The purpose of this research was to investigate the awareness of an adult on implants and the relevant factors which affect the satisfaction of a patient after an implant treatment. Methods : This study was conducted to 407 adult subjects in Seoul and Gyeonggi. A total of 384 data were analyzed except the questionnaires having poor responses or errors. Results : The acquaintance route of implant was TV advertisements, self-knowledge, internet, news, and newspapers. Dentist's ability to practice implant was the most important factor in patient's choice. The responents answered the expected lifespan of an implant was more than 5 years to 10 years. In terms of dental health management behavior on implants, the average response of the highest 4.07 points of 5 Likert scale. Generally women are more concerned with implant than men(p<0.01). The highly educated and elderly patients had tendency to receive more treatment(p<0.0001). Patients were more satisfactory after receiving regular checkups after treatment(p<0.05). The low expenses of implant satisfied the patients(p<0.05). Conclusions : As implant technology advances, the concern of patients on implants also increase. So reduction of cost can make the patients have access to the dentist and the patients' oral health must be improved through continuous dental care.
