  • Two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin molybdenum dichalcogenides $MoS_2$ has gained a great deal of attention in energy conversion and storage applications because of its unique morphology and property. The 2D $MoS_2$ nanosheets provide a high specific surface area, 2D charge channel, sub-nanometer thickness, and high conductivity, which lead to high electrochemical performances for energy storage devices. In this paper, an overview of properties and synthetic methods of $MoS_2$ nanosheets for applications of supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries is introduced. Different phases triangle prismatic 2H and metallic octahedral 1T structured $MoS_2$ were characterized using various analytical techniques. Preparation methods were focused on top-down and bottom-up approaches, including mechanical exfoliation, chemical intercalation and exfoliation, liquid phase exfoliation by the direct sonication, electrochemical intercalation exfoliation, microwave-assisted exfoliation, mechanical ball-milling, and hydrothermal synthesis. In addition, recent applications of supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries using $MoS_2$ electrode materials are discussed.

  • In this study, zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal, fusion, and fusion/hydrothermal methods with fly ash, coal fly ash, and a waste catalyst discharged from thermal power plants and incinerator in Ulsan area. Coal fly ashes (CFAs) and a waste catalyst containing amounts of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ ranging from 60.29 to 89.62 wt%. CFAs were mainly composed of quartz and mullite which were assayed by a XRD pattern. Zeolite could be synthesized by CFAs and the waste catalyst when all methods were used. Na-A zeolite (Z-C1, Z-C2, and Z-W5) are mainly synthesized by the fusion method from CFAs and the waste catalyst. Z-C1 and Z-C2 formed by-products, calcite peaks, which is caused by the content of CaO in CFAs and the addition of $Na_2CO_3$ for a synthetic process.

  • Transition-metal-oxide-incorporated hydrotalcites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of their synthetic mixtures containing precursors of transition metal oxides and their properties of nitrogen dioxide adsorption was investigated. The dispersion of transition metal oxides on the hydrotalcites and the amount and the state of nitrogen dioxide adsorbed on them were examined by using XRD, SEM, XPS, nitrogen adsorption, a gravimetric adsorption system, FT-IR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption techniques. Transition metal oxides were mainly incorporated on their surface and the incorporation of iron and nickel oxides to the hydrotalcites increased their adsorption amounts of nitrogen dioxide. The dispersion of iron oxide on the hydrotalcites was effective in increasing the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption, while too much amount of iron oxide incorporation reduced the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption due to masking of surface basic sites by agglomerated iron oxide. Although the incorporation of iron oxide to the hydrotalcites lowered the adsorption strength of nitrogen dioxide, the incorporation of it with a proper amount enhanced the amount of nitrogen dioxide adsorption and the stability against the hydrothermal treatment.

  • Siliceous mudstones are embedded on a large scale in the Tertiary formations of Pohang area. Some useful zeolites such as NsP, (Na, TMA)P, analcime and hydroxysodalite were synthesized from the siliceous mudstones by treating with the variety of solution, i.e ., NaOH, NaOH+NaCl, NaOH, NaOH+$NaAlO_2$and NaOH+TMAOH at the low-temperature hydrothermal system ranging 60~12$0^{\circ}C$. Major precursor of zeolites is found as opal-CT in the zeolite-forming reaction. Smectite, which is included in considerable amounts in the mudstone, appears to play a major role of Al-source in the zeolite synthesis. In comparison, chalcedonic quartz and mica are rather insoluble in alkaline solution, and thus, these are observed as major impurities in the reaction products. An addition of $NaAlO_2$to NaOH solution is effective for eliminating these impurities in the reaction procedure, through these are partly dissolved when elevating the reaction temperature, concentration, and time. Phase change from NaP to hydroxysodalite takes place at the NaOH concentrations of 3.0~4.0 M, and the reaction is not sensitive to the temperature shift. NaP is more stable at lower NaOH concentration and higher activity of $Na_{+}$ whereas analcime is sensitive to the temperature change and stable at higher than $100^{\circ}C$ and 2.0~4.0 M in NaOH concentration. For the pure NaP synthesis without any other products, the treatment of mudstones with 1:1 solution of NaOH and $NaAlO _2$ turns out to be quite effective. NaP was successfully synthesized together with analcime at $100^{\circ}C$ as well as lower concentrations of NaOH+NaCl solution. In addition, the organic type, (Na, TMA)P was formed together with smectite in the 1:1 solution of NaOH and TMAOH.

  • Reducing CO2 into high value fuels and chemicals is considered a great challenge in the 21st century. Efficiently activating CO2 will lead to an important way to utilize it as a resource. This article reviews the latest progress of g-C3N4 based catalysts for CO2 reduction. The different synthetic methods of g-C3N4 are briefly discussed. Article mainly introduces methods of g-C3N4 shape control, element doping, and use of oxide compounds to modify g-C3N4. Modified g-C3N4 has more reactive sites, which can significantly reduce the probability of photogenerated electron hole recombination and improve the performance of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Considering the literature, the hydrothermal method is widely used because of its simple equipment and process and easy control of reaction conditions. It is foreseeable that hydrothermal technology will continue to innovate and usher in a new period of development. Finally, the prospect of a future reduction of CO2 by g-C3N4-based catalysts is predicted.

  • Through the low-temperature(60-150${\circ}C$) hydrothermal treatment of perlite with the alkaline solution at various NaOH concentrations, the mode of volcanic glass alteration and resultant zeolite formation were investigated in a closed system. At a temperature of 80${\circ}C$ and alkalinities of pH range 8 to 12, corresponding to the natural environments of diagenetic zeolite formation, only weak dissolution of perlitic glass occurs without zeolite formation despite the residence time of 100 days. Activities of Si and Al increase progressively, as a consequence of increasing pH, whereas activity ratios of Si/Al decrease. Zeolites were synthesized from perlite in the alkaline solution at above 0.1M NaOH concentrations. Below the temperature of 100${\circ}C$ Na-P was mainly formed, whereas analcime was the dominant zeolite at the temperature range of 100-150${\circ}C$. During Na-P synthesis chabazite and Na-X were also formed as by-products in case of lower proportion of solution/sample(<10ml/g) and higher NaOH concentraion (>3M), respectively. The alteration modes of perlite in the zeolite synthesis reflect that the formation of synthetic zeolites occurs as an incongruent dissolution likely with the diagenetic formation of natural zeolites from volcanic glass. Considering much difference in reaction kinetics between natural and synthetic systems, however, the evaluated synthetic conditions in these experiments were not directly applicable to the natural diagenetic system.

  • The effects of $Na_2O$, $SiO_2$ and $H_2O$ contents of the synthetic mixtures prepared from water glass on the crystallinity and crystallite size of sodalite were studied. The composition of the synthetic mixtures described by $x\;Na_2O{\cdot}y\;SiO_2{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}z\;H_2O$ was varied within x=2.5~7.5, y=1.4~3.0, z=140~400. The hydrothermal reaction was carried out at $140^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. High content of $Na_2O$ resulted in the high crystallinity and small crystallite of sodalite. The $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratios of around 2 were suitable for the synthesis of sodalite, and produced zeolite species were varied by the $H_2O$ content. Sodalite was mainly obtained with a high crystallinity from the synthetic mixtures with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratio of around 2 and high content of $Na_2O$. The high content of sodium ions caused a decrease in the particle sizes because of their role of structure directing agent.

  • Advanced argillic, argillic, and phyllic zones are the most important alteration patterns to predict the hidden ore body during exploration of hydrothermal deposits. We examined the quantitative relationship between the spectral absorption characteristics and the mineral content of the synthetic mixtures such as alunite-kaolinite and illite-kaolinite using short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy. In the alunite-kaolinite mixtures, the spectral absorption characteristics of the alunite was highly correlated with the Hull quotient reflectance(0.99) and the kaolinite had the highest correlation with the Gaussian peak(0.92). Illite-kaolinite mixtures are essential for Gaussian deconvolution because of the overlap of absorption region. Illite and kaolinite mixtures indicate the high correlation of 0.93 and 0.98, respectively. The error ranges in the alunite-kaolinite(8%) and illite-kaolinite mixtures(5%) derived from SWIR were smaller than the ones(29% and 26%) obtained from X-ray diffraction(Rietveld) analysis. These results show that SWIR spectroscopic analysis is more reliable than XRD Rietveld analysis in terms of quantification of allowed minerals.

  • In this work, we developed a synthetic method for preparing one-dimensional $MnO_2$ nanowires through a hydrothermal method using a mixture of $KMnO_4$ and $MnSO_4$ precursors. As-prepared $MnO_2$ nanowires had a high surface area and porous structure, which are beneficial to the fast electron and ion transfer during electrochemical reaction. The microstructure and chemical structure of $MnO_2$ nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The electrochemical properties of $MnO_2$ nanowire electrodes were also investigated using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge with a three-electrode system. $MnO_2$ nanowire electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 129 F/g, a high rate capability of 61% retention, and an excellent cycle life of 100% during 1000 cycles.

  • In this study, iron nanoparticles impregnated hydrochar (FeNPs@HC) was synthesized using lignocellulosic waste and simple one-pot synthetic method. During hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, the mixture of lignocellulosic waste and ferric nitrate (0.1~0.5 M) as a precursor of iron nanoparticles was added and heated to 220℃ for 3 h in a teflon sealed autoclave, followed by calcination at 600℃ in N2 atmosphere for 1 h. For the characterization of the as-prepared materials, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were used. The change of Fe(III) concentration in the feedstock influenced characteristics of produced FeNPs@HC and removal efficiency towards As(V) and Pb(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm test, maximum As(V) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of Fe0.25NPs@HC were found to be 11.81 and 116.28 mg/g respectively. The results of this study suggest that FeNPs@HC can be potentially used as an adsorbent or soil amendment for remediation of groundwater or soil contaminated with arsenic and cation heavy metals.
