This study is to examine how well the hydrologic model reproduces the dam collapse. To do this, A hydrologic model FLO-2D is being operated to reproduce dam collapse with rainfall data and surface data in a small dam. In order to examine the performance of the model, the simulation was compared and reviewed with the data collected through the field survey. The results show that it takes about 2 hours to reach 1 km downstream. Inundation areas are about 188,640 m2 by the simulation and the difference from the field investigation is about 6.1%. Ten representative points were selected from the areas where the simulation and the field survey did not match. The discrepancy is less than about 0.08 m and does not appear to be significant. This study will present basic information on disaster preparedness operation and planning to minimize damage caused by sudden collapse of agricultural soil dams in the future.

The objectives of this study were to develop a system linking hydrologic and water quality models considering the mechanisms of agricultural reservoir and paddy cultivation and to evaluate whether the developed system simulates hydrologic and water quality processes better than a hydrologic model that do not consider the mechanisms. The system consisted of Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) as a watershed model, Module-based hydrologic Analysis System for Agricultural watersheds (MASA) as reservoir water balance model, and Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management System-Paddy (CREAMS-PADDY) as a hydrologic and water quality model for paddy fields. This study carried out on the Seolseong-Cheon watershed in Icheon, and the water level and water quality had been monitored for two years at the outlet of the watershed. According to the results of this study, the performance of the simulation using HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system was better than others, but they did not show a statistically significant difference. This seemed to be due to the uncertainty of the farming data and the water quality data of the reservoir. Therefore, if accurate input data for the system is obtained, HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system could be used to model an agricultural watershed to obtain more realistic results. The results of this study could be utilized to the modeling of agricultural watersheds in Korea where paddy rice cultivation is dominant.
The purpose of this research is to apply the neural networks models for the hydrologic disaggregation of the yearly pan evaporation(PE) data in Republic of Korea. The neural networks models consist of multilayer perceptron neural networks model(MLP-NNM) and support vector machine neural networks model(SVM-NNM), respectively. And, for the evaluation of the neural networks models, they are composed of training and test performances, respectively. The three types of data such as the historic, the generated, and the mixed data are used for the training performance. The only historic data, however, is used for the testing performance. The application of MLP-NNM and SVM-NNM for the hydrologic disaggregation of nonlinear time series data is evaluated from results of this research. Four kinds of the statistical index for the evaluation are suggested; CC, RMSE, E, and AARE, respectively. Homogeneity test using ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U test, furthermore, is carried out for the observed and calculated monthly PE data. We can construct the credible monthly PE data from the hydrologic disaggregation of the yearly PE data, and the available data for the evaluation of irrigation and drainage networks system can be suggested.
This paper proposes an extended model evaluation method that considers not only the model performance but also the model structure and parameter uncertainties in hydrologic modeling. A simple reservoir model (SFM) and distributed kinematic wave models (KWMSS1 and KWMSS2 using topography from 250-m, 500-m, and 1-km digital elevation models) were developed and assessed by three evaluative criteria for model performance, model structural stability, and parameter identifiability. All the models provided acceptable performance in terms of a global response, but the simpler SFM and KWMSS1 could not accurately represent the local behaviors of hydrographs. Moreover, SFM and KWMSS1 were structurally unstable; their performance was sensitive to the applied objective functions. On the other hand, the most sophisticated model, KWMSS2, performed well, satisfying both global and local behaviors. KMSS2 also showed good structural stability, reproducing hydrographs regardless of the applied objective functions; however, superior parameter identifiability was not guaranteed. A number of parameter sets could result in indistinguishable hydrographs. This result indicates that while making hydrologic models complex increases its performance accuracy and reduces its structural uncertainty, the model is likely to suffer from parameter uncertainty.

A physically-based, distributed hydrologic model ANSWERS is described and its test results with two small watersheds near the Banweol reservoir are presented. The sizes of the watersheds are 270 ha and 477 ha, respectively. The smaller one has a mild topography with 40 percent forest area. The other has a steeper slope and 87 percent forest area. The model parameters were calibrated using observed runoff data and used for storm runoff simulation. The simulated peak discharges were in good agreement with the data. The model underestimated the recession parts of hydrographa as compared to the observed ones.

Watershed topographical information is required in hydrologic analysis, supporting efficient hydrologic model operation and managing water resources. Watershed topographical data extraction systems based on desktop GIS are abundant these days placing burdens for spatial data processing on users. This paper describes development of a Web-based Geographic Information Systems that can delineate the Geum River sub-basins and extract watershed topographical data in real time. Through this system, users can obtain a watershed boundary by selecting outlet location and then extracting topographical data including watershed area, boundary length, average altitude, slope distribution about the elevation range with Web browsers. Moreover, the system provides watershed hydrological data including land use, soil types, soil drainage conditions, and NRCS(Natural Resources Conservation Service) curve number for hydrologic model operation through grid overlay technique. The system operability was evaluated with the hydrological data of WAMIS(Water Management Information System) with the government operation Web site as reference data.
Nowadays, the discharges of urban streams during dry season are depleted because the hydrologic cycle in the watershed has been destroyed due to the expansion of the impermeable area, the excessive groundwater pumping, climate change, and so forth. The streamflow depletion may bring out severe water quality problems. This research are to investigate the hydrologic characteristics and to develop a technology to restore sound hydrologic cycle of Anyangcheon watershed. For the hydrological cycle analysis of the Anyangcheon watershed, continuous simulations of urban runoff were performed for the upstream basin of Gocheok bridge whose basin area covered 4/5 of the whole catchment area. The increase of impervious area by urbanization was analysed and its effect on urban runoff was evaluated. The SWMM 5 (Storm Water Management Model 5) was used for the continuous simulation of urban runoff. The analysis results of urbanization effect on runoff are as follows: the surface runoff in 2000 increases to 65% of the whole precipitation whereas the surface runoff in 1975 amounts to 50% of the precipitation; the groundwater runoff in 2000 amounts to 7% and shows 6% decrease during the period from 1975 to 2000.
The correlation between hydrologic performance design parameters of small hydro power(SHP) sites and rainfall condition have been analyzed for major river systems. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to estimate the inflow caused from rainfall. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for SHP plants is established. Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance characteristics for SHP sites have been analyzed. The results show that the hydrologic performance characteristics of SHP sites have some difference between the river systems. Especially, the specific design flowrate and specific output of SHP sites located on North Han river and Nakdong river systems have large difference compared with other river systems. It was found that the hydrologic performance design parameters such as specific design flowrate and specific output were affected by rainfall condition in basin area of SHP sites.

Climate models, both global and regional, have increased in sophistication and are being run at increasingly higher resolutions. The Land Surface Models (LSMs) coupled to these climate models have evolved from simple bucket models to sophisticated Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) schemes needed to support complex linkages and processes. However, some underpinnings of terrestrial hydrologic parameterizations so crucial in the predictions of surface water and energy fluxes cause model errors that often manifest as non-linear drifts in the dynamic response of land surface processes. This requires the improved parameterizations of key processes for the terrestrial hydrologic scheme to improve the model predictability in surface water and energy fluxes. The Common Land Model (CLM), one of state-of-the-art LSMs, is the land component of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). However, CLM also has energy and water biases resulting from deficiencies in some parameterizations related to hydrological processes. This research presents the implementation of a selected set of parameterizations and their effects on the runoff prediction. The modifications consist of new parameterizations for soil hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, frozen soil, soil water availability, and topographically controlled baseflow. The results from a set of offline simulations are compared with observed data to assess the performance of the new model. It is expected that the advanced terrestrial hydrologic scheme coupled to the current CLM can improve model predictability for better prediction of runoff that has a large impact on the surface water and energy balance crucial to climate variability and change studies.

This study is to analyse the hydrological behavior of agricultural reservoir using CAT (Catchment hydrologic cycle Assessment Tool). The CAT is a water cycle analysis model in order to quantitatively assess the characteristics of the short/long-term changes in watershed. It supports the effective design of water cycle improvement facilities by supplementing the strengths and weaknesses of existing conceptual parameter-based lumped hydrologic models and physical parameter-based distributed hydrologic models. The CAT especially supports the analysis of runoff processes in paddy fields and reservoirs. To evaluate the impact of agricultural reservoir operation and irrigation water supply on long-term rainfall-runoff process, the CAT was applied to Idong experimental catchment, operated for research on the rural catchment characteristics and accumulated long term data by hydrological observation equipments since 2000. From the results of the main control points, Idong, Yongdeok and Misan reservoirs, the daily water levels of those points are consistent well with observed water levels, and the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiencies were 0.32~0.89 (2001~2007) and correlation coefficients were 0.73~0.98.
