Electrocatalytic activity of palladium for hydrogen oxidation and reduction was studied using AC impedance method. The system under study was arranged in electrolytic mode consisting of Pd electrode under study, Pt counter electrode and Nafion electrolyte between them. Two types of Pd electrodes were used - carbon-supported Pd (Pd/C) and Pd foil electrode. Pd/C anode contacting pure hydrogen showed a steady decrease of charge transfer resistance with the increase of anodic overpotential, which is an opposite trend to that found with Pd foil anode. But Pd foil cathode also exhibited a decrease of the resistance with the increase of cathodic overpotential. The relationship between imposition of overpotential and subsequent change of the charge transfer resistance is determined by the ratio of the rate of faradaic process to the rate of mass transportation; if mass transfer limitation holds, increase of overpotential accompanies the increase of charge transfer resistance. Regardless of the physical type of Pd electrode, the anode contacting hydrogen/oxygen gas mixture did not reveal any independent arc originated from local anodic oxygen reduction.
The effect of hydrogen and oxygen plasma treatments on the structural properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been systematically investigated. The plasma treatment resulted in the removal of the amorphous carbon particles. As the plasma treatment time was longer, the CNT diameter was reduced, regardless of gas types. Especially, for the sample treated in hydrogen plasma, the catalyst metal on the tip of CNTs was eliminated.
The effect of hydrogen and oxygen plasma treatments on the structural properties of carbon nanotube(CNT) has been systematically investigated. As the plasma power was increased, nano particles were appeared at the surface of CNTs. At high plasma power(300 Watt), the structure of CNT was changed from nanotube type to nano particles. However, in case of hydrogen plasma treatment, there was no change in microstructure of CNT. From the Raman analysis, the crystallinity of CNT was deteriorated by the plasma treatment, regardless of gas types.
We have investigated the effect of the hydrogen flow rate on the characteristics of IZO thin films for the TCO (transparent conducting oxide). For this purpose, IZO thin films are deposited by RF magnetron sputtering at 300℃ with various H2 flow rate. To investigate the influences of the ambient gases, the flow rate of hydrogen in argon was varied from 0.1 sccm to 1 sccm. The IZO thin films deposited at 300℃ show crystalline structure having an (222) preferential orientation. The electrical resistivity of the crystalline-IZO films deposited at 300℃ and hydrogen gas of 0.8sccm was 3.192×10-4Ω cm, the lowest value. As the hydrogen gas flow rate increased, the resistivity tended to decrease. The XPS profiles showed that the number of oxygen vacancy decreased as the hydrogen flow rate increased. The transmittance of the IZO films deposited at 300℃ were showed more than 80%.
$MgB_2$ bulk samples were sintered at different ambient. In this work, high purity Ar gas was added with oxygen and hydrogen gas, which can be regarded as impurity in a sense, as a possible dopant in the $MgB_2$. It was found that oxygen in the sintering ambient leads to a decrease in the critical current density $J_c$ at self field and lower fields. However, we can obtained higher $J_c$ at higher fields. It was also noted that $MgB_2$ samples sintered with 5% hydrogen in Ar revealed the increased $J_c$ at all fields compared to those processed in pure Ar ambient. From the XRD and FESEM analysis, the impurity gas in Ar can refine the $MgB_2$ grain size and result in increased grain. boundary, which can act as a strong flux pinning sites in $MgB_2$ samples. Also discussed are the effects of sintering ambient on irreversibility field, $H_{irr}$ and the upper critical field, $H_{C2}$.
To develop a pressurized chemical looping combustor, effect of pressure on minimum fluidization velocity and transition velocity to fast fluidization was investigated in a two-interconnected pressurized fluidized bed system using oxygen carrier particle. The minimum fluidization velocity was measured by bed pressure drop measurement with variation of gas velocity. The measured minimum fluidization velocity decreased as the pressure increased. The transition velocity to fast fluidization was measured by emptying time method and decreased as the pressure increased. Gas velocity in the fuel reactor should be greater than the minimum fluidization velocity and gas velocity in the air reactor should be greater than the transition velocity to fast fluidization to ensure proper operation of two interconnected fluidized bed system.
Effects of reactant gas flow rates and starvation on phosphoric acid fuel cell performance were studied. As the reactant gas flow rates increased, the cell performance increased and then the cell maintained constant performance. The optimum flow rates of hydrogen, oxygen and air under galvanostatic condition of 150 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ are found to be 3cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, 4cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, and 15cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Hydrogen and oxygen starvation resulted in voltage loss of about 5mV and 0-2mV, respectively. The voltage loss was independent of starvation time. These results were discussed from the point of view of electrochemical reaction of the cell.
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) is very interesting power source due to high power density, simple construction and operation at low temperature. But it has problems such as high cost, improvement of performance and effect of temperature. These problems can be approached to be solved by using mathematical models which are useful tools for analysis and optimization of fuel cell performance and for heat and water management. In this paper, the present work is to develop an electrochemical model to examine the electrochemical process inside PEM fuel cell. A complete set of considerations of mass, momentum, species and charge is developed and solved numerically with proper account of electrochemical kinetics. When depth of gas channel becomes thinner, diffusion of reactant makes well into gas diffusion layer(GDL) and the performance increases. Although at low current region there is little voltage difference between experimental data of PEM fuel cell and numerical data. When the porosity size of gas diffusion layer for PEM fuel cell is bigger, oxygen diffusion occurs well and oxygen mass fraction appears high in catalyst layer.
The recent rise in applications of thermoelectric materials has attracted interest in studies toward the fabrication of thermoelectric materials using mass production techniques. In this study, we successfully fabricate n-type $Bi_2Te_{2.7}Se_{0.3}$ material by a combination of mass production powder metallurgy techniques, gas atomization, and spark plasma sintering. In addition, to examine the effects of hydrogen reduction in the microstructure, the thermoelectric and mechanical properties are measured and analyzed. Here, almost 60% of the oxygen content of the powder are eliminated after hydrogen reduction for 4 h at $360^{\circ}C$. Micrographs of the powder show that the reduced powder had a comparatively clean surface and larger grain sizes than unreduced powder. The density of the consolidated bulk using as-atomized powder and reduced atomized powder exceeds 99%. The thermoelectric power factor of the sample prepared by reduction of powder is 20% better than that of the sample prepared using unreduced powder.
