In this study, Anaerobic sewage sludge in a batch reactor operation at $35^\circ{C}$ was used as the seed to investigate the effect of pretreatments of waste activated sludge and to evaluate its hydrogen production potential by anaerobic fermentation. Various pretreatments including physical, chemical and biological means were conducted to utilize for substrate. As a result, SCODcr of alkali and mechanical treatment was 15 and 12 times enhanced, compared with a supernatant of activated sludge. And SCODcr was 2 time increase after re-treatment with biological hydrolysis. Those were shown that sequential hybridized treatment of sludge by chemical & biological methods to conform hydrogen production potential in bath experiments. When buffer solution was added to the activated sludge, hydrogen production potential increased as compare with no addition. Combination of alkali and mechanical treatment was higher in hydrogen production potential than other treatments.
The study was based on a three-stage, non-repetitive factorial experiment in which chemical-rotted kenaf fibers were treated separately with hydrogen peroxide concentrations of $0.5\%,\;1\%\;and\;2\%$, with pH solutions of 7, 9 and 11, and treatment times of 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Under optimal conditions, the study was conducted to determine the strength and elongation of kenaf fibers by the addition of chelators, penetrants and surfactants. The hydrogen peroxide concentration, solution pH and treatment time directly affected the strength of kenaf fibers. The hydrogen peroxide concentration, solution pH affected the elongation of kenaf fibers. It was found, however, that the interaction between pH and treatment time, concentration and treatment time, concentration and treatment time and pH affected the strength of kenaf fibers. Also, It was found that the interaction between pH and concentration, concentration and treatment time, concentration and treatment time and pH affected the elongation of kenaf fibers. Under the hydrogen peroxide conditions of $2\%$ concentration, pH 11 and a treatment time of 60 minutes, there were no effects on the strength and elongation of kenaf fibers with the addition of chelator SP, CA.
A palladium-nikel(Pd-Ni) alloy composite membrane has been fabricated on microporous nickel support formed with nickel powder. Plasma surface treatment process is introduced as pre-treatment process instead of HCI activation. Pd coating layer was prepared by dc magnetron sputtering deposition after $H_2$ plasma surface treatment. Palladium-nickel alloy composite layer had a fairly uniform and dense surface morphology. The membrane was characterized by permeation experiments with hydrogen and nitrogen gases at temperature of 773 K and pressure of 2.2psi. The hydrogen permeance was 6 ml/minㆍ$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍatm and the selectivity was 120 for hydrogen/nitrogen($H_2$/$N_2$) mixing gases at 773 K.
The advanced oxidation process (AOP) using ozone combined with hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet treatment were evaluated for biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (EDOC) formation and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. Oxidation treatment were conducted alone or combination with ozone, hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet processes. Ozone dosage of ozone process was varied from $0.5mg/l{\ell}\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$. Ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was done using $20mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ of hydrogen peroxide concentration. Ozone/ultraviolet process was irradiated with $12mW/cm^2$ of density and 254nm. Ozone dosage was varied from $0.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ at the ozone/hydrogen peroxide and ozone/ultraviolet processes too. Contact time of all the process was 20 minutes. Oxidation treatment were performed on microfiltration effluent samples. BDOC formation was reached to an optimum at ozone dosage of $1.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in the ozone/hydrogen peroxide process and $1mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in ozone/ultraviolet process, after which BDOC formation was decreased at higher ozone dosages. But BDOC formation was increased with ozone dosages increasing in ozone process. The efficiency of DOC removal was higher AOPs than ozone process. Ozone/ultraviolet proces was the highest for DOC removal efficiency in each process. THMFP. removal efficiency by ozone/ultraviolet process was higher than that by each of ozone process and ozone/hydrogen peroxide process.
In this study, We had surface-treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for improving hydrogen storage capacity. The SWNTs were treated by heat treatment, acid treatment and fluorinated at various temperatures. The SWNTs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and TEM and estimated hydrogen storage capacities at 303K. As shown Raman spectra and TEM images, the structure of fluorinated SWNTs were stable at 423K but changed to the MWNTs-like structure or onion structure over 523K. Hydrogen storage capacity of SWNTs fluorinated at 423K was remarkably increased 2.6 times than that of pristine SWNTs. For SWNTs fluorinated at 573K, the amount of hydrogen adsorbed wasn't increased compared with SWNTs fluorinated at 423K. Therefore, high hydrogen storage capacity of SWNTs could be archived by fluorinated condition at 423K, which was not changed SWNT structure.
In the present work, a new hydrogen added argon heat treatment process that prevents the formation of hydrides and eliminates the dehydrogenation step, is developed. Dissolved hydrogen has a good effect on sintering properties such as oxidation resistance and density of greens. This process can also reduce costs and processing time. In the experiment, commercially available Ti-6Al-4V powders are used. The powders are annealed using tube furnace in an argon atmosphere at $700^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ for 120 min. Hydrogen was injected temporarily during argon annealing to dissolve hydrogen, and a dehydrogenation process was performed simultaneously under an argon-only atmosphere. Without hydride formation, hydrogen was dissolved in the Ti-6Al-4V powder by X-ray diffraction and gas analysis. Hydrogen is first solubilized on the beta phase and expanded the beta phases' cell volume. TGA analysis was carried out to evaluate the oxidation resistance, and it is confirmed that hydrogen-dissolved Ti-6Al-4V powders improves oxidation resistance more than raw materials.
This study was carried out for the purpose of developing environmental friendly and effective chemical treatment method for the disease control in the land-based flounder culture which is industrially popular in the coastal area in Korean. The chemicals such as flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus and their effects on the fish based on the 24hr-$LC_{50}$, $LT_{50}$, 24-hour survival rate at each experimental concentration, recovery rate of the survived individual from chemical treatment, and the histological change of the gill after chemical treatment were investigated and analyzed. The 24hr-$LC_{50}$ was 321.65 ppm for formalin, 419.62 ppm for chlorine dioxide, and 395.97 ppm for hydrogen peroxide, respectively. The $LT_{50}$ was 15-hour for formalin, 17-hour for chlorine dioxide and 24-hour for hydrogen peroxide, respectively. Fishes exposed to the experimental concentration of three chemicals were quickly susceptible in the order of formalin, chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide with a trend of shorter half lethal time at higher concentration. Initial survival rate of the flounder soon after chemical treatment was the highest in the hydrogen peroxide treatment compared with the other two chemicals. The histological damage by the hydrogen peroxide treatment was negligible compared with the other two chemicals. Accordingly, hydrogen peroxide treatment showed the lowest toxicity compared with the other two chemicals to the experimental fishes.
The present study aims to investigate the impact of hydrogen-rich water on the lactic acid level in metformin-treated diabetic rats under hypoxia. Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups, including normal diet group, and diabetes model (DM) group, DM + metformin treatment (DMM) group, DMM + hypoxia treatment (DMMH) group and DMMH + hydrogen-rich water (DMMHR) group. We found that the levels of lactic acid, pyruvate and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly lower in the blood of DMMHR group than DMMH group. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels in liver and heart were significantly higher in DMMH group after hydrogen-rich water treatment, while malondialdehyde and oxidized glutathione levels were decreased in DMMHR group when compared with DMMH group, which indicates that hydrogen-rich water could reduce oxidative stress. qPCR analysis demonstrated that that pro-apoptotic genes Bax/Caspase-3 were upregulated in DM group and metformin treatment suppressed their upregulation (DMM group). However, hypoxic condition reversed the effect of metformin on apoptotic gene expression, and hydrogen-rich water showed little effect on these genes under hypoxia. HE staining showed that hydrogen-rich water prevented myocardial fiber damages under hypoxia. In summary, we conclude that hydrogen-rich water could prevent lactate accumulation and reduce oxidant stress in diabetic rat model to prevent hypoxia-induced damages. It could be served as a potential agent for diabetes patients with metformin treatment to prevent lactic acidosis and reduce myocardial damages under hypoxic conditions.
Hydrogen ($H_2$) treatment using a two-step $TiO_2$ nanotube (TONT) film was performed under various annealing temperatures from $350^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ and significantly influenced the extent of hydrogen treatment in the film. Compared with pure TONT films, the hydrogen-treated TONT (H:TONT) film showed substantial improvement of material features from structural, optical and electronic aspects. In particular, the extent of enhancement was remarkable with increasing annealing temperature. Light absorption by the H:TONT film extended toward the visible region, which was attributable to the formation of sub-band-gap states between the conduction and valence bands, resulting from oxygen vacancies due to the $H_2$ treatment. This increased donor concentration about 1.5 times higher and improved electrical conductivity of the TONT films. Based on these analyses and results, photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance was evaluated and showed that the H:TONT film prepared at $550^{\circ}C$ exhibited optimal PEC performance. Approximately twice higher photocurrent density of 0.967 $mA/cm^2$ at 0.32 V vs. NHE was achieved for the H:TONT film ($550^{\circ}C$) versus 0.43 $mA/cm^2$ for the pure TONT film. Moreover, the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH, ${\eta}$) of the H:TONT film was 0.95%, whereas a 0.52% STH efficiency was acquired for the TONT film. These results demonstrate that hydrogen treatment of TONT film is a simple and effective tool to enhance PEC performance with modifying the properties of the original material.
MOCVD is one of the major deposition techniques for Cu thin films and Ta-Si-N is one of promising barrier metal candidates for Cu with high thermal stability. Effects of hydrogen plasma pretreatment of the underlying Ta-Si-N film surface on the Cu nucleation in Cu MOCVD were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron emission spectrometry analyses. Cu nucleation in MOCVD is enhanced as the rf-power and the plasma exposure time are increased in the hydrogen plasma pretreatment. The optimal plasma treatment process condition is the rf-power of 40 Wand the plasma exposure time of 2 min. The hydrogen gas flow rate in the hydrogen plasma pretreatment process does not affect Cu nucleation much. The mechanism through which Cu nucleation is enhanced by the hydrogen plasma pretreatment of the Ta-Si-N film surface is that the nitrogen and oxygen atoms at the Ta-Si-N film surface are effectively removed by the plasma treatment. Consequently the chemical composition was changed from Ta-Si-N(O) into Ta-Si at the Ta-Si-N film surface, which is favorable for Cu nucleation.
