A membrane reactor concept, which combines the typical characteristics of chemical reaction with separation process, has been analyzed and simulated in this study. The advantages of the use of a membrane reactor include chemical equilibrium shift towards higher reactant conversion and purer product than the traditional reactors. A membrane reactor model which incorporates a catalytic reaction zone and a separation membrane is proposed. The water-gas shift reaction to produce hydrogen was chosen as a model reaction to be investigated. The membrane reactor is divided into smaller parts by number of n and each part (named cell), which contains both reaction and product separation function is modeled. One of the membrane outlet streams is connected to the next cell, which is repeated up to the last cell. The simulation results can be used for various purposes including decision of optimum operating condition and membrane reactor design.
The poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) and silica-filled PTMSP membranes were prepared by casting from a toluene solution on porous polyetherimide (PEI). FT-IR spectrum, GPC and SEM pictures have been taken to characterize the membranes. The particle size of membrane decreases as silica content of the membrane increases from 23 to 60 wt%, and a uniform distribution of the silica is observed. The separation properties of the gas mixture (32 mol% $H_2$/ 68 mol% $N_2$) through the composite membranes were studies as a function of pressure and percentage of silica. Selectivity values of $H_2$/$N_2$ increased as the pressure of permeation cell and silica content of the membrane increased. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$), and tail separation factor((equation omitted)) of PTMSP-PEI composite membrane were 2.28, 1.58, and 1.44 respectively at $\Delta$P 30 psi and $25^{\circ}C$. $\alpha$, $\beta$, and (equation omitted) of PTMSP-Silica-PEI composite membrane for 60 wt% silica were 3.34, 1.95, 1.72 at $\Delta$P 30 psi and $25^{\circ}C$.

Polygeneration process is widely used to pursuit high efficiency by sharing electricity, utility, refrigeration and the utilization of product chemicals. In this paper, performance analysis of the 450 MW Class polygeneration process was conducted with various syngas generated from coal and biomass gasifier. WGSR and PSA process were employed for hydrogen production and separation. Process modeling and dynamic simulation was carried out, and the results were compared with NETL report. Net power of the polygeneration process was 439 MW considering power consumption. More than 90% of CO was converted at WGSR and the hydrogen purity of PSA was more than 99.99%.

Pd-ceramic composite membranes and catalytic membrane reactors(CMR) have been studied for hydrogen purification and recovery in th fusion reactor fuel cycle. The development of techniques for coating microporous ceramic tubes with Pd and Pd/Ag layers is described: composite membranes have been produced by electroless deposition (Pd/Ag film of 10-20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and rolling of thin metal sheet (Pd and Pd/ Ag membranes of 50-70 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Experimental results on electroless membranes showed that the metallic film presented some defects and the membranes had not complete hydrogen selectivity . Then the catalytic membrane reactors with electroless membranes can be applied for some industrial processes that do not require a complete separation of the hydrogen (i.e. in the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons). The rolled thin Pd/Ag membranes separated the hydrogen from the other gas with a complete selectivity and exhibited a slightly larger (about a factor 1.7) mass transfer resistance with respect to the electroless membranes. Experimental tests confirmed the good performances in terms of durability.
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted considerable attention since its discovery for its catalysis of water splitting to hydrogen and oxygen under visible light irradiation. However, pristine g-C3N4 confers only low photocatalytic efficiency and requires surface cocatalysts to reach moderate activity due to a lack of accessible surface active sites. Inspired by the high specific surface area and superior electron transfer of graphene, we developed a strongly coupled binary structure of graphene and g-C3N4 aerogel with 3D porous skeleton. The as-prepared 3D structure photocatalysts achieve a high surface area that favors efficient photogenerated charge separation and transfer, enhances the light-harvesting efficiency, and significantly improves the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate as well. The photocatalyst performance is observed to be optimized at the ratio 3:7 (g-C3N4:GO), leading to photocatalytic H2 evolution of 16125.1 mmol. g-1. h-1 under visible light irradiation, more than 161 times higher than the rate achieved by bulk g-C3N4.

The characteristics of flame shape, laminar burning velocity, emissions and heat flux of stagnation point in premixed impinging jet flame of syngas fuel with 10% hydrogen content were experimentally investigated. Also, the adiabatic temperature and burning velocity are calculated by Chemkin package with USC-II mechanism. The equivalence ratios(0.8~5.0) and dimensionless separation distance(2.0~5.0) with fixed Reynolds number(1800) are main parameters in this work. Different flame shapes and colors were observed for different impingement conditions. The experimental results of burning velocity by flame surface area have a consistent with previous works and numerical simulation of this work. The inner flame length could be predicted with the ratio of mixture velocity and burning velocity from a simple formulation by the laminar burning velocity definition. It has been observed that the heat fluxes at stagnation point are directly affected by the flame shape including the separation distance. The emission results in impinging flame of syngas fuel show that the characteristics of $NO_x$ emission traced well with adiabatic temperature trend and CO emission due to fuel rich condition increased continuously with respect to the equivalence ratio.
Palladium membranes, which are permselective to hydrogen separation, were used for the hydrogen purification and in membrane reactors for improving conversions by shifting the reaction equilibrium. Palladium/ceramic composite membranes were prepared by electroless plating technique and then etched in titanium chloride ($TiCl_4$) as a post treatment to enhance the membrane's durability. These membranes were used for membrane reactors in water gas shift (WGS) reaction. CO conversions for the membrane reactor were obtained according to experimental parameters and compared to the traditional reactor without a palladium/ceramic membrane. As a result, CO conversion using palladium membrane reactor at an appropriate condition was over 20~25% greater than that without the membrane reactor. The stability in the long-term test of up to 120 h for WGS reaction with the membrane reactor was good without the degredation of CO conversion.

The membrane separation process for carbon dioxide capture from hydrogen reformer exhaust gas has been developed. Using a commercial membrane module, a multi-stage process was developed to achieve 90% of carbon dioxide purity and 90% of recovery rate for ternary mixed gas. Even if a membrane module with being well-known properties such as material selectivity and permeability, the process performance of purity and recovery widely varies depending on the stage-cut, the pressure at feed and permeate side. In this study, we verify the limits of capture efficiency at single-stage membrane process under various operating conditions and optimized the two-stage recovery process to simultaneously achieve high purity and recovery rate.

A Pd-based hydrogen membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need high hydrogen perm-selectivity. The surface roughness of the support is important to coat the pinholes free and thin-film membrane over it. Also, The pinholes drastically decreased the hydrogen perm-selectivity of the Pd-based composite membrane. In order to remove the pinholes, we introduced various surface pre-treatment such as alumina powder packing, nickel electro-plating and micro-polishing pre-treatment. Especially, the micro-polishing pretreatment was very effective in roughness leveling off the surface of the porous nickel support, and it almost completely plugged the pores. Fine Ni particles filled surface pinholes with could form open structure at the interface of Pd alloy coating and Ni support by their diffusion to the membrane and resintering. In this study, a $4{\mu}m$ surface pore-free Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy membrane on a porous nickel substrate was successfully prepared by micro-polishing, high temperature sputtering and Cu-reflow process. And $H_2$ permeation and $N_2$ leak tests showed that the Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy hydrogen membrane achieved both high permeability of $13.2ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}atm^{-1}$ permation flux and infinite selectivity.

A nuclear fusion fuel cycle plant is composed of various subsystems such as a hydrogen isotope storage and delivery system, a tokamak exhaust processing system, and a hydrogen isotope separation system. Korea shares in the construction of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor fuel cycle plant with the EU, Japan and US, and is responsible for the development and supply of the storage and delivery system. We thus present details on the hydrogen isotope process safety. The main safety analysis procedure is to use a hazard and operability study. Nine segments were studied how the plant might deviate from its design purpose. We present a detailed description of the process, examine every part of it to determine how deviations from the design intent can occur and decide whether these deviations can give rise to hazards. We determine possible causes and note protective systems, evaluate the consequences of the deviation, and recommend actions to achieve our safety goal.
