  • According to the Off-Gas Generation and Use Status Report (2015), Off-gas from the steel industry is estimated to be 80 million tons per year in Korea. If this is purified, large amounts of hydrogen can be produced, so active research and development related to hydrogen purification facilities is underway. In this study, a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was conducted by analyzing the components of a off-gas based hydrogen purification facility and investigating risk factors. The risk analysis results were determined to be at an acceptable level and will be used as basic data to improve the safety of facilities considering the risks of hydrogen.

  • Hydrogen gas is a green energy sources because it features no emission of pollutants during combustion. But hydrogen gas is very dangerous, being flammable and very explosive. Hydrogen gas detection is very important for the safety of a nuclear power plant. Hydrogen gas is generated by oxidation of nuclear fuel cladding during a critical accident, and leads to serious secondary damage in the containment building. This paper discusses the development of a Raman lidar system for remote detection and measurement of hydrogen gas. A small, portable Raman lidar system was designed, and a measurement algorithm was developed to quantitatively measure hydrogen gas concentration. To verify the capability of measuring hydrogen gas with the developed Raman lidar system, experiments were carried out under daytime outdoor conditions by using a gas chamber that can adjust the hydrogen gas density. As results, our Raman lidar system is able to measure a minimum density of 0.67 vol. % hydrogen gas at a distance of 20 m.

  • In this study, a theoretical study was conducted on the pre-cooling temperature of hydrogen gas and the heat exchanger area in a small-scale liquefied hydrogen system. The small-scale liquefaction system was built and liquid hydrogen production experiments were performed. In this process, the temperature of precooled hydrogen gas was measure to be about 120 K, and then the possibility of a cause was analyzed through pressure analysis of hydrogen gas and container, and analysis of the amount of liquid hydrogen produced. It was found that some reasonable results were obtained from the theoretical approaches. Based on this theoretical approach, we aim to improve the production of liquid hydrogen by optimizing the heat exchange area according to flow rate.

  • In this experimental study, we examined gas engine characteristics of a small high-speed engine in various ways. And we studied performance of natural gas, hydrogen gas and gasoline fuel engines, as emission characteristics and process of combustion. For the purpose of preventing back-fire occurred in case of high-speed and high load in hydrogen engine, we controlled air quantity by installing throttle valve in gas fuel engine. We performed experiment by mixing nitrogen to hydrogen fuel. As a result, we could find out characteristics which of a high speed small engine by applying gas fuels.

  • In this paper, the basic experiment, electrolytic cell design and basic manufacturing have been made to interpret the characteristics of Hydrogen-Oxygen-Gas-Generator. As for the detailed matters, the data research on basic technology on Hydrogen-Oxygen-Gas and analysis on characteristics of Hydrogen-Oxygen-Gas from basic experiment. Also the experiment of characteristics and comparative evaluation between constant current source using IGBT converter from existing method and constant current source using new phase shift PWM control method converter. As results when it has injected constant DC current, we has compared Gas quantities by variable ripple frequencies using phase shift PWM control method converter. Therefore, in linear region, it has not different Gas quantities by constant DC current and by phase shift PWM control method converter. Also, it has increased Gas quantities wilder linear region when put ripple frequency at saturation region. Through, Gas quantities and input power, it has acquired higher input power per Gas quantities at put pulse curren. Therefore, when designing converter or inverter for electrolysis, which has ripple current.

  • Hydrogen is known to be a clean fuel which does not generate a green house gas during the combustion. However, about 8 kg of carbon dioxide is generated during the course of producing 1 kg of hydrogen through reforming, water gas shift reaction and pressure swing adsorption in order to obtain a high purity hydrogen over 99.999% by volume. In this work, carbon dioxide generation is estimated according to four kinds of natural gas compositions supplied by Korea Gas Corporation and regarding natural gas as pure methane. For the simulation of the modeling, PRO/II with PROVISION V10.2 at AVEVA was utilized and Peng-Robinson equation of state with Twu's alpha function was selected.

  • This study was conducted using FLACS, a specialized gas accident analysis program. Hydrogen refueling stations subject of safety analysis, consist of compression facilities, storage tanks, and hydrogen piping. The safety analysis of potential risk factors was conducted after reflecting the design specifications of major facilities and components, environmental conditions around hydrogen refueling stations, etc. As of 2021, about 70 refueling stations in Korea are available, and 1,200 are scheduled to be introduced in the next 2040. To prepare for possible accidents caused by potential hazards for the safe distribution of hydrogen refueling stations, we intend to derive hydrogen leakage diffusion scenarios and review their safety.

  • Compared with hydrogen, ammonia has the advantages of high gravimetric hydrogen densities (17.8 wt.%), ease of storage and transportation as a chemical hydrogen storage medium, while its application in small-scale on-site hydrogen production scenarios is limited by the need for complex separation equipment during high purity hydrogen production. Therefore, the study of PEMFC, which can directly utilize ammonia decomposition gas, can greatly expand the application of fuel cells. In this paper, the output characteristics, fuel efficiency and the variation trend of hydrogen concentration and local current density in the anode channel of fuel cell with the output voltage of PEMFC fueled by ammonia decomposition gas were studied by experiment and simulation. The results indicate that the maximum output power of the hybrid fuel decreases by 9.6% compared with that of the pure hydrogen fuel at the same inlet hydrogen equivalent. When the molar concentration of hydrogen in the anode channel is less than 0.12, the output characteristics of PEMFC will be seriously affected. Employing ammonia decomposition gas as fuel, the efficiency corresponding to the maximum output power of PEMFC is approximately 47%, which is 10% lower than the maximum efficiency of pure hydrogen.

  • The goal of this research is to understand the NOx emission in direct injected diesel engine with premixed hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen fuel was supplied into the test engine through the intake pipe. Amount of hydrogen-supplemented fuel was 70 % basis on heating value of the total input fuel. The effects of intake air temperature and exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on NOx emission were studied. The intake air temperatures were varied from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$ by using liquid nitrogen. Also, the exhaust gas was recirculated to the intake manifold and the amount of exhaust gas was controlled by the valve. The major conclusions of this work include: ( i ) nitrogen concentrations in the intake pipe were increased by 30% and cylinder gas temperature was decreased by 24% as the intake air temperature were changed from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$; ( ii ) NOx emission per unit heating value of supplied fuel was decreased by 45% with same decrease of intake air temperature; and (iii) NOx emission was decreased by 77% with 30% of EGR ratio. Therefore, it may be concluded that EGR is effective method to lower NOx emission in hydrogen fueled engine.

  • This study evaluated hydrogen effect of metal and non-metallic materials used in the hydrogen blended natural gas vehicle. Hydrogen penetrated concentration of 34Cr-Mo steel(850MPa tensile strength) for winter driving conditions was measured 0.0018ppm and summer driving conditions was 5.3ppm. The critical hydrogen concentration of high strength metal used in this study was measured 1.03ppm by CLT. Therefore, 34CrMo steel cas cause problems in the 30% HCNG(25MPa) environment. In case of the test for non-metallic materials, all materials met the criteria of the gas resistance test, but Fluorocarbon Rubber material had a significant change in the volume. So if it is used, extra care is needed.
