Carbon neutrality has been suggested to overcome the global climate crisis caused by global climate change. Hydrogen energy is a major way to achieve carbon neutrality, and the developments and policies of hydrogen technology have been proposed to achieve this goal. To commercialize hydrogen energy resources, it is necessary to understand the overall value chain composed of hydrogen production, storage, and utilization and to present the direction of technological developments. In this paper the hydrogen strategies of major countries, including Europe, the United States, Japan, China, and South Korea will be analyzed, and hydrogen technologies by value chain will also be explain. This paper will contribute to understanding the overall hydrogen policy and technology, as both policy and technology are summarized.

Anodized tubular $TiO_2$ electrodes (ATTEs) with three noticeably different lengths are prepared to determine their optimum length for the photo-driven activity in the reaction of Cr(VI) reduction and hydrogen evolution. The ATTEs with ethylene glycol have longer $TiO_2$ tubes (7-15.6 ${\mu}m$) than those with hydrfluoric acid (0.6-0.8 ${\mu}m$). These samples, which differ only in the length of the tubes, with a wall thickness of ca. 20 nm, consist mainly of an anatase crystalline phase after heat treatment at $650^{\circ}C$, since the anatase crystallites at the tube walls do not undergo transformation into rutile phase, due to the constraints imposed by the wall thickness. Among them, the medium size (ca. 8 ${\mu}m$) tubes provide the optimum conditions, irrespective of the light intensity, which is explained in terms of the correlation between the amount of photons and the adsorbed electron acceptors and their location. Photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction leads to ca. 60% reduction of Cr(VI) even under 1 sun irradiation with the medium-sized anodized $TiO_2$ tubes, but only ca. 20% with the short- and long-sized tubes. For hydrogen evolution, tubes longer than 8 ${\mu}m$ do not exhibit better performance with any light intensity.

A hyperthermophilic archaeon, $Thermococcus$$onnurineus$ NA1 was studied to investigate its fermentation characteristics using various carbon sources including formate, maltose and carbon monoxide during the anaerobic batch cultivation at $80^{\circ}C$. Formate was the best carbon source for cell growth and hydrogen production among others. In the batch culture on formate, it was found that the cell concentration increased exponentially by 12 hrs of culture, after which the cell growth and formate consumption was retarded. Hydrogen production was continued more than 24 hrs although the cell growth was ceased at 18 hrs. Hydrogen production rate was directly correlated with the cell growth and formate degradation up to 18 hrs, and the average hydrogen production yield was 1.05 mole-$H_2$/mole-formate. Cell growth and hydrogen production were optimized at the initial pH 6-7, while inhibited at the initial pH lower than 5 and higher than 9.
Hydrogen-delayed fracture (HDF) was analyzed from the deposited weld metals of 600-MPa and 800-MPa flux-cored arc (FCA) welding wires, and then from the diffusible hydrogen behavior of the weld zone. Two types of deposited weld metal, that is, rutile weld metal and alkali weld metal, were used for each strength level. Constant loading test (CLT) and thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) analysis were conducted on the hydrogen pre-charged specimens electrochemically for 72 h. The effects of microstructures such as acicular ferrite, grain-boundary ferrite, and low-temperature-transformation phase on the time-to-failure and amount of diffusible hydrogen were analyzed. The fracture time for hydrogen-purged specimens in the constant loading tests decreased as the grain size of acicular ferrite decreased. The major trapping site for diffusible hydrogen was the grain boundary, as determined by calculating the activation energies for hydrogen detrapping. As the strength was increased and alkali weld metal was used, the resistance to HDF decreased.
In this study, constant loading test (CLT) was performed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement resistance for multipass FCA weld metals of 600MPa tensile strength grade. The microstructures of weld metal-2 having the smallest carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) consisted of grain boundary ferrite and widmanstatten ferrite in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-1 having the largest Ceq=0.47, showed the microstructures of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite and the large amount of bainite (vol.%=19%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-3 having the Ceq=0.41, which was composed of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite, and the small amount of bainite (vol.%=9%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. Hydrogen desorption spectrometry (TDS) used to analyze the amount of diffusible hydrogen and trapping site for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens electrochemically for 24 hours. With increasing the current density of hydrogen pre-charging, the released amount of diffusible hydrogen was increased. Furthermore, as increasing carbon equivalent of weld metals, the released diffusible hydrogen was increased. The main trapping sites of diffusible hydrogen for the weld metal having a low carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) were grain boundaries and those of weld metals having a relatively high carbon equivalent (Ceq: 0.41~0.47) were grain boundaries and dislocation. The fracture time for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens in the constant loading test was decreased as the carbon equivalent increased from 0.37 to 0.47. This result is mainly due to the increment of bainite that is vulnerable to hydrogen embrittlement.

This study was performed to develop a low Pt content catalyst as a catalyst for HI decomposition in S-I process. Bimetallic catalysts added various amounts of Pt on a silica supported Ni catalyst were prepared by impregnation method. HI decomposition was carried out using a fixed bed reactor. As a result, Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst showed enhanced catalytic activity compared with each monometallic catalyst. Deactivation of Ni-Pt catalyst was not observed while deactivation of Ni monometallic catalyst was rapidly occurred in HI decomposition. The HI conversion of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst was increased similar to Pt catalyst with increase of the reaction temperature over a temperature range 573K to 773K. From the TG analysis, it was shown that $NiI_2$ remained on the Ni(5.0)-Pt(0.5)/$SiO_2$ catalyst after the HI decomposition reaction was decomposed below 700K. It seems that small amount of Pt in bimetallic catalyst increase the decomposition of $NiI_2$ generated after the decomposition of HI. Consequently, it was considered that the activity of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst was kept during the HI decomposition reaction.

This study focused on the development of high performance catalyst for autothermal reforming (ATR) of gasoline to produce hydrogen. The ATR was carried out over MgO/Al2O3 supported metal catalysts prepared under various experimental conditions. The catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by N2-physisorption, CO-chemisorption, SEM and XRD. The performance of supported multi-metal catalysts were better than that of supported mono-metal catalysts. Especially, it was observed that the conversion of iso-octane over prepared Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst was 99.9 % comparable with commercial catalyst (ICI) and the selectivity of hydrogen over the prepared catalyst was 65% higher than ICI catalyst. Furthermore, it was identified that the sulfur tolerance of prepared catalyst was much better than ICI catalyst based on the ATR reaction of iso-octane containing sulfur of 100 ppm. Therefore, Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst can be applied for a fuel reformer, hydrogen station and on-board reformer in furl cell powered vehicles.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the freezing phenomena in printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) for cryogenic liquid hydrogen vaporizer. Local freezing phenomena in hot channels should be avoided in designing PCHE for cryogenic liquid hydrogen vaporizer. Hence, the flow and thermal characteristics of PCHE is experimentally investigated to figure out the conditions under when freezing occurs. To conduct lab-scale PCHE experiment, liquid nitrogen is used as a working fluid in cold channels instead of using liquid hydrogen. Glycol water is used as a working fluid in hot channels. Based on the experimental data, ratio between mass flow rates of cold channels and that of hot channels is proposed as contour map to avoid the freezing phenomena in PCHE.

For large scale separation hydrogen from different mixing ratio(60/40 and 80/20 vol.%) of hydrogen and methane $1Nm^3/hr$ and $4Nm^3/hr$ 2bed-6step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was used, respectively. The effects of the feed gas pressure, adsorption time, the feed flow rate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. In the $1Nm^3/hr$ PSA results, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75 % recovery and 99 % purity hydrogen in these processing. The optimum feed flowrate was 22 LPM and 17 LPM in the ratio 60/40 and 80/20, respectively. In the $4Nm^3/hr$ PSA results, 10 atm adsorption pressure might be simulated values to obtain more than 80 % recovery and 99 % purity hydrogen in these processing.

Purple non-sulfur bacteria, Rhodobacter sphaeroides KD131 grew to reach the maximum cell concentration in 45 hrs of incubation in the synthetic media containing (NH4)2SO4, L-aspartic acid and succinic acid as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, at 30oC under 8 klux irradiance using halogen lamp. The strain produced hydrogen from the middle of the logarithmic growth phase and continued until the cell growth leveled out. The strain grew and produced hydrogen under the irradiance of 3-30 klux, but cell growth was inhibited over 100 klux. In addition, anaerobic/light culture condition was better than the aerobic/dark on the hydrogen production. Among various photo-bioreactors examined, the flat-vertical reactor manufactured using clear acrylic plastic material showed the best hydrogen production rate at the given culture condition.
