The analysis of lateral hydrodynamic forces in the leakage path between a shrouded pump impeller through wear-ring seal and its housing is presented. Governing equations are derived based on Bulk-flow and Hirs' turbulent lubrication model. By using a perturbation analysis and a numerical integration method, governing equations are solved to yield leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of force developed by the impeller shroud and wear-ring seal. The variation of rotordynamic coefficients of pump impeller shroud and wear-ring seal is analyzed as parameters of rotor speed, pressure difference, shroud clearance, wear-ring seal clearance, and circumferential velocity at the entrance of impeller shroud for a typical multi-stage centrifugal pump.
A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.
The analysis of lateral hydrodynamic forces from the compressor labyrinth seals is presented. The basic equations are derived using a two-control-volume model for compressible flow. Blasius' wall friction-factor formula and jet flow theory are used for the calculation of the wall shear stresses and the recirculation velocity in the cavity. Linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position by an expansion in the eccentricity ratio. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the labyrinth seal. The rotordynamic analysis for the balance drum labyrinth seal of an ethylene refrigeration compressor is carried out. The results of rotordynamic characteristic of the labyrinth seal and comparisons with other types of seal, honeycomb seal and smooth seal, are presented.

The shaft seal of the reactor coolant pump is installed on the upper side of the rotating shaft of the pump to seal the reactor coolant from flowing out between the rotating shaft and the non-rotating parts. In this study, the loading conditions for the normal operation and faulted conditions are identified and structural integrity evaluation is performed using the finite element stress analysis for the sealing apparatus of the APR 1400 reactor coolant pump. It is confirmed that the stress analysis results satisfy the design criteria at all loading conditions.
A turbo pump unit provides high pressure oxygen and fuel in a space shuttle main engine (SSME). This paper focused on rotordynamics, investigating its characteristics based on a numerical simulation of turbo pump finite element model. Speeds up to 50,000 rpm are considered, as well as the special problems related to elastic-ring, seal hydrodynamic force, shroud force and clearance-excitation farce. The rotordynamic prediction shows that the elastic-ring which is inserted between the casing and the outer race of ball bearing allows far an acceptable separate margin of first critical speed. Additionally, the results show that the floating ring seal, which have a peculiar ring, adds substantial stiffness and damping to the system as well as exhibits superior performance in terms of rotordynamic stability of system compared to the plain seal.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the efficacy of modeling a surface effect ship's air-cushion flexible seal utilizing a two-dimensional beam under steady state conditions. This effort is the initial phase of developing a more complex three-dimensional model of the air-seal-water fluid-structure interaction. The beam model incorporates the seal flexural rigidity and mass with large deformations while assuming linear elastic material response. The hydrodynamic pressure is derived utilizing the OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver for a given set of steady-state flow condition. The pressure distribution derived by the CFD solver is compared with the pressure required to deform the seal beam model. The air pressure, flow conditions and seal geometry are obtained from experimental analysis. The experimental data was derived from large-scale experimental tests utilizing a test apparatus of a canonical surface effect ship's flexible seal in a towing tank over a variety of test conditions.
Non-contact type mechanical face seals installed in mechanical systems prevent leakage of working fluid using thin working fluid film between stator and rotor. For that purpose, various kinds of surface profiles, grooves and conings have been applied on seal surfaces of stator and rotor to generate hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressure. The thickness distribution of working fluid film is one of important factors which affect the working performances of mechanical face seal, and it is strongly affected by the surface height profiles of stator and rotor. Therefore, appropriate design of surface height profiles of stator and rotor is necessary to optimize the working performances and life of mechanical face seal. In this study, numerical analysis using finite volume method was conducted to estimate the working performances of wavy mechanical face seals which have 36 coning combinations. As results, minimum thickness of working fluid film, leakage volume of working fluid and friction torque in static equilibrium condition of mechanical face seal, and stiffness of working fluid film were obtained. The results show that the working performances of mechanical face seal were affected by the coning combinations which can change the thickness distribution of working fluid film and pressure distribution in sealing region of mechanical face seal.

Floating ring seals offer an opportunity to reduce leakage flows significantly in rotating machinery. Accordingly, they have been applied successfully to rotating machinery within the last several decades. For rocket turbopump applications, fundamental behavior and design philosophy have been revealed. However, further work is needed to explore the rotordynamic characteristics associated with rotor vibrations. In this study, rotordynamic forces for floating ring seals under rotor's whirling motions are calculated to elucidate rotordynamic characteristics. Comparisons between numerical simulation results and experiments demonstrated in our previous report are carried out. The three-dimensional Reynolds equation is solved by the finite-difference method to calculate hydrodynamic pressure distributions and the leakage flow rate. The entrance loss at the upstream inlet of the seal ring is calculated to estimate the Lomakin effect. The friction force at the secondary seal surface is also considered. Numerical simulation results showed that the rotordynamic forces of this type of floating ring seal are determined mainly by the friction force at the secondary seal surface. The seal ring is positioned almost concentrically relative to the rotor by the Lomakin effect. Numerical simulations agree quite well with the experimental results.
The experimental characterization of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is performed for the practical implementation of high-performance hard disk drive system. Firstly, the design concept of hydrodynamic bearing for the disk drive system is addressed including the herringbone grooved journal bearing, the spiral grooved thrust bearing, capillary seal design, and the viscous pumping of fluid. Secondly, the experimental evaluation is performed for the disk drive system in which the hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is implemented and its dynamic performances are compared with conventional ball-bearing spindle motor. The key parameters include NRRO(Non Repeatable Run-Out), disk dynamics, acoustics, and resultant PES (Position Error Signal). Finally, the external gyro-exciting test results including 200k CSS(Continuous Start-Stop) on three angular attitudes(0,90, 180 degree) are presented in order to verify the practical reliability of disk drive system subject to the gyro-motion of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor.
