Propeller cavitation extent, pressure fluctuation induced by cavitation, pressure distribution on propeller blade, total velocity distribution and nominal wake distribution for a MR Taker were computed in both conditions of model test and sea trial using a code STAR-CCM+. Then some of the results were compared with model test data at LCT and full-scale measurement (Ahn et al (2014); Kim et al (2014)] in order to confirm the availability of a numerical prediction method and to get the physical insight of local flow around a ship and propeller. The nominal wake distributions computed and measured by LDV velocimeter on the variation of on-coming velocity show the wake contraction characteristics proposed by Hoekstra (1974). The numerical prediction of propeller cavitation extent on a blade angular position and pressure fluctuation level on each location of pressure sensors are very similar with the experimental results.
The accurate assessment of hull-appendage interaction in the early design stage is important to control the inflow to the propeller plane, which can cause undesirable hydrodynamic effects in terms of cavitation phenomenon. This paper describes a numerical analysis for the flow around a fully appended surface ship model for which KRISO has carried out a model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT). This numerical study was performed with the LCT model test in a complementary manner for a good reproduction of the wake distribution of surface ships. A second order accurate finite volume method provided by a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program was used to solve the governing Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations, where the SST $k-{\omega}$ model was used for turbulence closure. The numerical results were compared to available LCT experimental data for validation. The calculations gave good predictions for the boundary layer profiles on the walls of the empty cavitation tunnel and the wake at the propeller plane of the fully appended hull model in the LCT.
In this study, we perform a 3D CFD conjugate analysis according to the shape of the foil ramp of the air foil thrust bearing, analyze the flow characteristics inside the bearing, and compare the results corresponding to the two shapes. Air has a lower viscosity than lubricating oil. Therefore, the thrust runner of the bearing must rotate at high speed to support the load. The gap between thrust runner and foil is significantly smaller than that of the oil bearing. Hence, it is crucial to analyze the complex flow characteristics inside the bearing to predict the complex flow inside the bearing and performance of the bearing. In addition, flow characteristics may appear differently depending on the ramp shape of the bearing foil, which may affect bearing performance. In this study, we numerically analyze the main flow path of air flowing into the bearing and the secondary flow path used for cooling the bearing using the commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX and compare the flow characteristics for straight and curved foil ramp shapes. Notably, there is a difference in the speed of the flowing air according to the shape of the ramp, which affects the bearing performance.
The prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a planing hull vessel is an important and challenging topic for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) applications to naval hydrodynamics. In this paper, the resistance and planing attitude analysis for a Fridsma hull, which is a prismatic planing hull, in still water are numerically studied using OpenFOAM. OpenFOAM is an open source code package based on C++ libraries and the finite volume method (FVM) for the discretization of the RANS equation. The volume of fluid method (VOF) is used to capture the water-air interface and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model is used for the turbulence simulation. The overset mesh method is used to capture the large motion of the hull at higher speeds. Before the extensive analysis, uncertainty analyses using various time steps and grid sizes were performed for one ship speed case of Fn = 1.19. The results of the present study are compared with those of a model test, other CFD research, and Savitsky's empirical formula. The results of the present study, following the trend of other CFD results, slightly over predict the resistance and under predict the sinkage and, more significantly, the trim.
In this study, the numerical code for the 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis of an SLWR (Steel Lazy Wave Riser) was developed using the lumped mass line model in a FORTRAN environment. Because the lumped mass line model is an explicit method, there is no matrix operation. Thus, the numerical algorithm is simple and fast. In the lumped mass line model, the equations of motion for the riser were derived by applying the various forces acting on each node of the line. The applied forces at the node of the riser consisted of the tension, shear force due to the bending moment, gravitational force, buoyancy force, riser/ground contact force, and hydrodynamic force based on the Morison equation. Time integration was carried out using a Runge-Kutta fourth-order method, which is known to be stable and accurate. To validate the accuracy of the developed numerical code, simulations using the commercial software OrcaFlex were carried out simultaneously and compared with the results of the developed numerical code. To understand the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of an SLWR, dynamic simulations of SLWRs excited at the hang-off point and of SLWRs in regular waves were carried out. From the results of these dynamic simulations, the displacements at the maximum bending moments at important points of the design, like the hang-off point, sagging point, hogging points, and touch-down point, were observed and analyzed.
