GTL(Gas-to-Liquid) 기술 현황

  • In recent years, the technologies for the production of synthetic fuel from natural gas have been attracting considerable interest because of high oil prices. While oil prices remaining high, GTL (Gas-to-Liquids) technology would provide an attractive option for utilizing gas resources. Furthermore, GTL fuels contain almost zero sulfur and low aromatics and have a very high cetane so that they are estimated to be environmentally friendly diesel fuels able of meeting the advanced fuel specifications of the 21st century. GTL process generally consists of three primary steps: synthesis gas production from natural gas reforming, hydrocarbon production from synthesis gas by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis, product upgrading by hydrocracking/hydroisomerization. This paper presents a brief summary of GTL technology and worldwide development trend about it focusing on the reforming of natural gas and the F-T synthesis.

  • Liquid rocket engines using liquefied natural gas (LNG) or methane as a fuel is known to have several good characteristics, such as high specific impulse compared to other hydrocarbon fuels, environment-friendly exhaust gas, low production cost, and re-usability with low soot generation in the cooling channel. In this study, experimental combustion chambers capable of using LNC and $CH_{4}$ are being researched through experimental firing tests, and within easy range of eyes' inspection, there are the periodical existence of soot or discoloration in the chamber wall surface. This result means that mixture ratio of oxidizer and fuel fluctuates periodically between outer-row injectors in the mixing head in the circumferential direction. Therefore, based on this phenomenon, the variation of mixture ratio near the chamber wall caused by the spill pattern of a shear coaxial injector was analyzed quantitatively and the thermal heat flux Into the cooling channel is modified. Then, the calculated and modified results are compared with the measured ones.

  • In hypersonic aircraft, increase of aerodynamic and engine heat lead thermal load in airframe. It could lead structural change of aircraft's component and malfunctioning. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, we investigated the method of measuring the heat sink of catalyst by using exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene as a fuel in a packed bed flow reactor similar to the actual reaction conditions.

  • In liquid oxygen/kerosene liquid rocket engines, kerosene is not only a propellant but also plays a role as a coolant to protect the combustion chamber wall from 3,000 K or more combustion gas. Since kerosene is exposed to high temperature passing through cooling channels, it may undergo heat-related chemical reactions leading to precipitation of carbon-rich solids. Such kerosene's thermal and fluidic characteristic test data are essential for the regeneratively cooled combustion chamber design. In this paper, we investigated foreign studies related to regenerative cooling channel and kerosene. Starting with general information on hydrocarbon fuels including kerosene, we attempted to systematically organize sedimentary phenomena on cooling channel walls, their causes/research results, coking test equipments/prevention methods, etc.

  • As hypersonic flight speeds and engines efficiencies increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Because the temperature of the air flow is too high to cool the aircraft structure at hypersonic flight speeds, it is essential to use the aircraft fuel as the primary coolant. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. The endothermic reactions are improved by catalysts which change the extent of reaction and product distribution. At high temperature, liquid hydrocarbons would lead to coke formation that can reduce the effectiveness of heat exchanger and cause rapid degradation of the catalyst, thus endothermic capacity of endothermic fuels is limited to the temperature at which coke doesn't form. In this study, the essential cooling technologies by applying endothermic fuels and the properties of the endothermic fuels are described.

Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments on endothermic properties were investigated with pore structure controlled zeolite catalyst using metal deposition. We secured the catalyst that had better endothermic performance than commercial catalyst. The object of this study is inspect catalyst properties which have effect on heat absorption improvement. Synthetic catalyst could be applied to system that use exo-THDCP as endothermic fuel instead of other commercial catalyst.

Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments were investigated in endothermic fuel cooling system with zeolite catalyst. Three shapes of catalysts have been manufactured and endothermic characteristics were recovered. Bineded catalyst showed higher heat absorption and conversion than other two zeolite catalysts. In product distribution, binded catalyst showed higher aromatics composition.

Characteristics of Liquid Fuel Jet Injected into Supercritical Environment (초임계 환경으로 분사되는 액체 연료 제트의 분사 거동 특성)

  • The single jet of decane/methylcyclohexane mixed fuel that is surrogate for kerosene was injected into supercritical environment and visualized using shadowgraph technique. The injection pressure drop of the fuel jet of Tr = 0.484 was kept constant at 0.5 MPa and the experiment was conducted above the critical point of the mixed fuel, and the reduced temperatures of the chamber was changed from 1.00 to 1.23, and the reduced pressures was 1.00 and 1.38. As an index for reducing the density of jets sprayed into the supercritical environment, the brightness intensity of the post-processed jet image was observed with the internal temperature and pressure of the chamber. It was confirmed that the decrease in the brightness intensity of the jet when the temperature inside the chamber increased, and when the pressure inside the chamber was higher at the same temperature, the decrease in the brightness intensity of the jet was delayed. When the pressure inside the chamber is high, it is thought that the change in brightness intensity is delayed due to the increase in the pseudo-critical temperature of the fuel and the increase in the temperature required to reduce the density of the fuel jet.

Effect of Air Velocity on Combustion Characteristics in Small-Scale Burner

  • This paper presents the combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel from a conventional pressure-swirl nozzle of a small-scale burner. The nozzle has orifice diameters of 0.256 mm and liquid flow rates ranging from 50 to 64 mL/min were selected for the experiments. The furnace temperature distribution along the axial distance, the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2$, NOx, $SO_2$, flue gas temperature, and combustion efficiency were studied. The local furnace and flue gas temperatures decreased with an increase in air velocity. At injection pressures of 1.1 and 1.3 MPa the maximum furnace temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit, at an axial distance of 242 mm from the diffuser tip. The CO and $CO_2$concentrations decreased with an increase in air velocity, but they increased with an increase in injection pressure. The effect of air velocity on NOx was not clearly seen at low injection pressures, but at injection pressure of 1.3 MPa it decreased with an increase in air velocity. The effect of air velocity on $SO_2$ concentration level is not well understood. The combustion efficiency decreased with an increase in air velocity but it increased with an increase in injection pressure. It is recommended that injection pressure less than 0.9 MPa with air velocity not above 8.0 m/s would be suitable for this burner.
