  • Deformation surrounding the hole in the tube during the hydro-piercing process has been investigated in this study. The tube is expanded and internally pressurized between upper and lower dies, and a piercing punch is driven forcefully through a cross passage in the die and through the wall of the tube. The pressurized fluid within the tube provides support to the wall of the tube during a piercing step to form a hole in the tube having less deformation surrounding the hole in the tube. The deformation area may be fully retracted to a substantially flat form or partially retracted to a countersunk form. In this study, a mathematical model that can predict deformation surrounding the hole has been proposed and experimentally verified by actual hydro-piercing test.

  • The productivity of hydroforming process can be increased by combining pre-forming process and post-forming process such as the bending, piercing and the embedding process. Therefore in this study, integrated studies on the hydro-embedding technology have been performed by analyzing the deformed mode of the tubes and the optimal process parameters. In the case of the embedding test the characteristics of the embedded parts, such as the shape of the screw tip, screw thread and shape of thread were investigated at various process conditions. To measure the clamping force between the embedded part and the tube, special measuring device was used.

  • In this paper, a pico hydro turbine employing low head circulation water at fish farms is designed and evaluated. Due to the advantages of simple structures, small head requirements, and low-cost investment, the constant thickness propeller turbine is considered as a feasible solution. The design process based on the free vortex method is presented in full detail, and a 4-blade runner is built using BladeGen. The turbine performance is analyzed both numerically and via experimental methods. Despite slight differences, the results show similar trends between CFD simulations and experiments carried out on factory test-rigs in a wide range of working conditions. At the design flow rate, the turbine achieves the best efficiency of 70 %, generating 3.5 kW power when rotating at 420 rpm. The internal flow field, as well as the turbine's behavior, are investigated through the distribution of blade streamlines, pressure, and velocity around the runner. Moreover, the pressure coefficient on the blade surface at 3 span positions is plotted while the head loss for each simulation domain is calculated and displayed by charts.

  • To protect the ozone layer depeletion the CFC (chlorofluorocarbon). HCFC(hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerants will be replaced with HFCs (hydro-fluorocarbon) as an alternative refrigerant. In recent years a good deal of effort has been made to develop new compressors which are compatible to the new referigent. This paper focused on developing accelerated screening test for predicting tribological characteristics of the rotary compressor in atmosphere of R407C as an alternative refrigerant with polyolester lubricant. Falex wear test machine with high pressure chamber has been used to simulate friction and wear behavior of the common contact geometries found in rotary compressors.

  • For a certain operating point of a horizontal shaft bulb turbine (i.e. volume flow, net head, blade angle, guide vane angle) the efficiency for different pressure levels (i.e. different Thoma-coefficient ${\sigma}$) is calculated using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD-)-code including two-phase flow and a cavitation model. The results are compared with experimental results achieved at a closed loop test rig for model turbines. The comparison of the experimentally and numerically obtained efficiency and the visual impression of the cavitation show a good agreement. Especially the drop in efficiency is calculated with satisfying accuracy. This drop in efficiency in combination with the visual impression is of high practical importance since it contributes to determine the admissible cavitation in a bulb-turbine. It is seen that the incipient cavitation in Kaplan type turbines has no major importance in determing this admissible amount of cavitation.

  • Important operation parameters and performance of a high temperature ceramic candle filter system were evaluated through a series of demonstration tests at a pilot-scale vitrification plant. At the initial period of each test, due to the growth of dust cake on the surface of ceramic candles, the pressure drop across the filter media increased sharply. After that it became stable to a certain range and varied continuously proportion to the face velocity of off-gas. On the contrary, at the initial period of each test, the permeability of filter element decreased rapidly and then it became stable. Back flushing of the filter system was effective under the back flushing air pressure range of 3∼5 bar. Based on the dust concentrations measured by iso-kinetic dust sampling at the inlet and outlet point of HTF, the dust collection efficiency of HTF evaluated. The result met the designed performance value of 99.9%. During the demonstration tests including a hundred hour long test, no specific failure or problem affecting the performance of HTF system were observed.

  • Hydro-Reactive metal Fuel (HRF) which has more fuel than general solid propellant reducing oxidizing agent is suitable for ultrahigh speed rocket motor in the water. However, burning rate of HRF has not been studied yet. Through the earlier studies, we established ultrasonics measurement system measuring burning rate of solid propellant as a function of pressure in a single test and verified its reliability. In this paper, we will measure burning rate of HRF using ultrasound with previous development measurement system.

  • This study presents the research results of the BMT(Benchmark Model Test) simulations of the DECOVALEX-2019 project Task B. Task B named 'Fault slip modelling' is aiming at developing a numerical method to predict fault reactivation and the coupled hydro-mechanical behavior of fault. BMT scenario simulations of Task B were conducted to improve each numerical model of participating group by demonstrating the feasibility of reproducing the fault behavior induced by water injection. The BMT simulations consist of seven different conditions depending on injection pressure, fault properties and the hydro-mechanical coupling relations. TOUGH-FLAC simulator was used to reproduce the coupled hydro-mechanical process of fault slip. A coupling module to update the changes in hydrological properties and geometric features of the numerical mesh in the present study. We made modifications to the numerical model developed in Task B Step 1 to consider the changes in compressibility, Permeability and geometric features with hydraulic aperture of fault due to mechanical deformation. The effects of the storativity and transmissivity of the fault on the hydro-mechanical behavior such as the pressure distribution, injection rate, displacement and stress of the fault were examined, and the results of the previous step 1 simulation were updated using the modified numerical model. The simulation results indicate that the developed model can provide a reasonable prediction of the hydro-mechanical behavior related to fault reactivation. The numerical model will be enhanced by continuing interaction and collaboration with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2019 Task B and validated using the field experiment data in a further study.

  • This paper presents the research activities performed to date for the development of a supercritical pressure water-cooled reactor (SCWR) in Korea. The research areas include a conceptual design of an SCWR with an internal flow recirculation, a reactor core conceptual design, a heat transfer test with supercritical $CO_2$, an adaptation of an existing safety analysis code to the supercritical pressure condition, and an evaluation of candidate materials through a corrosion study. Methods to reduce the cladding temperature are introduced from two different perspectives, namely, thermal-hydraulics and core neutronics. Briefly described are the results of an experiment on the heat transfer at a supercritical pressure, an experiment that is essential for the analysis of the subchannels of fuel assemblies and the analysis of a system safety. An existing system code has been adapted to SCWR conditions, and the process of a first-hand validation is presented. Finally, the corrosion test results of the candidate materials for an SCWR are introduced.
