The hydraulic pump for a Electro-hydrostatic Actuator for aircrafts should be able to quickly feed large volume of oil into hydraulic cylinder in order to reduce the response time. On the other hand, it should be also able to precisely dispense small amount of oil by low-speed operation so that the steady state position control error of the EHA can be accurately compensated. This paper is focused on the investigation how the plasma coating surface treatment of cylinder barrel with CrSiN can contribute to the reduction of low-speed friction torque of a bent-axis type piston pump. The results showed that the reduction of the friction torque was not remarkable, but that the anti-wear characteristics of the CrSiN-coated cylinder barrel were much better that those of the original one.
As microcomputers have become widespread and the high speed solenoid valves have been developed, digitally controlled hydraulic systems are used in many applications. This study deals with position control of hydraulic cylinder operated by two port 3-way high speed solenoid valve using a self-learning strategy. This was done by developing a control algorithm for the microcomputer which always automatically adjust the length of control pulse to the optimum value in accordance with the error regardless of changes in the operating condition and physical differences between components. Tests carried out in the laboratory indicate that a positional accuracy could be improved.
Minimum clearance between the U-cup seal groove of a piston and a cylinder bore to ensure against extrusion of the U-cup ring and leakage of working fluids is an important design parameter for a seal designer in hydraulic cylinder applications. Therefore, typical U-cup seal of a hydraulic actuator has been analyzed as a function of a sealing gap using the nonlinear FEM software MARC. In this study, the useful design data were presented as a function of the sealing gap and the sealed hydraulic pressure.

We conducted hollow cylinder tensile strength tests and Brazilian tests in Seokmo granite to measure tensile strength necessary for estimating the magnitude of the maximum horizontal principal stress in hydraulic fracturing stress measurements. Two different pressurization rates were used in hollow cylinder tests. Tensile strengths were determined to be higher at higher pressurization rate, which suggests that tensile strength should be measurement at the same rate used in actual in situ hydraulic fracturing tests. Considering the effect of pressurization rate and specimen size on tensile strength, the hollow cylinder tests and Brazilian tests yield similar results each other. This demonstrates that Brazilian tests can be utilized to produce representative tensile strengths for interpretation of hydraulic fracturing test results.
When a deep-seabed lifting pump is kept this device has bending and deformation in the axis due to its long length(8m). These influences can be caused a breakdown. Therefore, a mounting must be developed to keep the lifting pump safe. This paper discusses the hydraulic cylinder design of the lifting pump and structural safety estimation of the mounting using SBD(simulation-based design). The multi-body dynamic simulation method is used, which has been used in the automotive, structural, ship building, and robotics industries. In this study, the position and diameter of the hydraulic cylinder were determined based on the results of the strokes and buckling loads for the design positions of the hydraulic cylinder. A structural dynamic model of the mounting system was constructed using the determined design values, and the structural safety was evaluated using this dynamic model. According to these results, this system has a sufficient safety factor to manufacture.
The pile driving process may lead to ground heaving, causing additional positive skin friction to act on the piles, compromising their stability. This study proposes a new pile foundation type that can reduce positive skin friction. This was investigated by designing and constructing a pile with a hydraulic cylinder which actively responds to ground deformation. The newly proposed pile design was compared against traditional piles in multiple model tests where ground heaving was simulated. In the tests, base load and total shaft resistance were measured during ground heaving and with expansion of the hydraulic cylinder. As a result of the tests, a very small amount of expansion of the hydraulic cylinder member completely reduced the positive skin friction and increased the base load. Excessive expansion of the hydraulic cylinder, however, generates negative skin friction beyond the zero skin friction state. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the appropriate level of hydraulic cylinder expansion, taking into account the amount of ground heaving and the allowable displacement of the pile.

In order to reduce energy consumption, secondary controlled system has been applied to many types of equipments. In lifting equipments or press machines using hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic transformer is used as a control component instead of a valve for motion control and a component for recovering potential energy of load. The transformer is combination of a variable displacement pump/motor as a secondary controlled element and a fixed displacement pump/motor. Based on the nominal model derived from mathematical model, the feedback type two-degree-of-freedom controller is designed and implemented. From simulation results, the disturbances including nonlinear friction torque, leakage flow and load force can be compensated and good positioning accuracy is obtained. It show that the proposed controller is effective.
An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake flow behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using a constant temperature anemometer and flow visualization. Various vortex shedding modes are observed. Fin height and pitch are closely related to the vortex shedding frequency after a certain transient Reynolds number. The through velocity across the fins decreases with increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by the velocity distribution just on top of the finned tube. The weaker gradient of velocity distribution is shown as increasing the freestream velocity and the fin height, while decreasing the fin pitch. The weaker velocity gradient delays the entrainment flow and weakens its strength. As a result of this phenomenon, vortex shedding is decreased. The effective diameter is defined as a virtual circular cylinder diameter taking into account the volume of fins, while the hydraulic diameter is proposed to cover the effect of friction by the fin surfaces. The Strouhal number based upon the effective diameters seems to correlate well with that of a circular cylinder without fins. After a certain transient Reynolds number, the trend of the Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with the hydraulic diameter exhibit the best correlation with the circular cylinder's data.
This paper presents the improved procedure to assess static and dynamic strength of crawler type excavators. A fully integrated model including front attachment and chassis was prepared for structural analysis. In this paper, two types of loading input methods were investigated and the method imposing digging force directly on bucket tooth was more convenient than imposing cylinder reaction force on cylinder pin even if the two methods showed no discrepancy in analysis results. Static strength analysis was carried out for eight analysis scenarios based on two extreme digging positions, maximum digging reach position and maximum digging force positions. The results from static strength analysis were compared with measured stresses, cylinder pressures and digging forces and showed a good quantitative agreement with measured data. Dynamic strength analysis was carried out for simple reciprocation of boom cylinders. It was recognized that the effect of compressive stiffness of hydraulic oil was very important for dynamic structural behavior. The results from dynamic strength analysis including hydraulic oil stiffness were also compared with measured acceleration data and showed a qualitative agreement with measured data.
This paper is the numerical study on the correlation of leakage by the variation of inlet pressure and clearance in hydrostatic bearing. The main goal of this study is to apply to the design of hydro system the results that the pocket pressure and the leakage rate according to the inlet pressure and the clearance between piston and cylinder tube. Because the hydrostatic bearing in hydraulic cylinder has the narrow rectangular channel between piston and cylinder tube, so to verify the numerical scheme, it has been compared with the experimental results of Brackbill and Kandlikar. The pressure data of numerical results inside narrow rectangular channel correlate was showed a good agreement with experimental results, thereby the numerical scheme was applied to the real model that is a hydraulic cylinder with the hydrostatic bearing. In conclusion, the pressure differences between inlet and pocket were shown within 3%. Leakage rates were showed rapidly increased pattern between about 4.5 and 6.7 times because the section area to calculate the leakage rates were proportioned to a square of diameter. The correlation equation was calculated among the inlet pressure, the clearance and the leakage rate by using the linear regression.
