A conventional parallel hybrid active filter has an inherent problem of large current ratings of devices used in inverter. In general, this problem has been solved by adjusting turn ratio of a matching transformer. However, making the transformer with high turn ratio may be not available for high power system due to its requirement for high voltage insulation. In this paper, a new configuration is proposed for parallel hybrid active filter. In the proposed hybrid active filter, the active filter is connected to the passive filter inductor in parallel through a matching transformer for the aim of reducing the size of inverter. Through computer simulations, we have shown the outstanding performances of the proposed topology.
A hybrid converter for the on-board charger consisting of a soft switching full bridge (SSFB) and a half bridge (HB) LLC resonant converter is proposed. The proposed topology adopts an additional switch and a diode at the secondary side of SSFB converter to guarantee the wide ZVS range of primary side switches and to eliminate the circulating current. The output voltage is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of secondary side switch. The effectiveness of the proposed converter was experimentally verified using a 10-kW prototype circuit. The experimental results show 96.8% peak efficiency.

Hybrid active filters utilize passive filters to reduce the voltage rating and hence the VA rating of the active filter converter. A novel hybrid active filter topoloty to minimize utility current harmonics at high power levels is presented in this paper. The proposed topology combines both passive and active filters to obtain the lowest converter VA rating as compared to the converter rating in the active filter and the series-active hybrid filter configurations. This is demonstrated with experimental results from a laboratory model. Simulation results showing the effect of passive filter impedance are presented.

This paper is a study on the bi-directional DC-DC converter, one of the key elements of 48V-12V dual systems in mild hybrid electric vehicles. Mild hybrid electric vehicles require a bi-directional DC-DC converter that can efficiently transmit power in two directions between a 48V battery and a 12V battery. To develop a bi-directional DC-DC converter with better price competitiveness, upgraded fuel economy, excellent performance and smaller size, this study designed, produced and presented a circuit that improved on the existing one. In the proposed 8-phase bi-directional DC-DC converter, the size of the passive element was reduced through the 8-phase interleaved topology, whereas downscaling had previously posed a difficulty. This study also designed and produced a 2.5kW class prototype. Based on the proposed 8-phase interleaved topology, a size of 227.5 (W) * 172 (L) * 64.35 (H) was achieved. In the boost mode operation and buck operation modes, the maximum efficiency was recorded at 94.04 % and 95.78 %, respectively.

In wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the conventional compensation topologies only can provide a constant current (CC) or constant voltage (CV) output under their resonant conditions. It is difficult to meet the CC and CV hybrid charging requirements without any other schemes. In this study, a switching hybrid topology (SHT) is proposed for CC and CV electric vehicle (EV) battery charging. By utilizing an additional capacitor and two AC switches (ACSs), a double-side LCC (DS-LCC) and an inductor and double capacitors-series (LCC-S) topologies are combined. According to the specified CC and CV charging profile, the CC and CV charging modes can be flexibly converted by the two additional ACSs. In addition, zero phase angle (ZPA) also can be achieved in both charging modes. In this method, because the operating frequency is fixed, without using PWM control, and only a small number of devices are added, it has the benefits of low-cost, easy-controllability and high efficiency. A 3.3-kW experimental prototype is configured to verify the proposed switching hybrid charger. The maximum DC efficiencies (at 3.3-kW) of the proposed SHT is 92.58%.

In this study, an optimal stiffness model of the C-frame, which was supporting the mold and tool load, was proposed to obtain quality self-piercing riveting (SPR) joining. First, the load path acting on the C-frame structure was identified using topology optimization. Then, a final suggested model was proposed based on the load path results. Stiffness and strength analyses were performed for a rivet pressing force of 7.3 [t] to compare the design performance of the final proposed model with that of the initial model. Moreover, to examine the reliability of continuous and repeated processes, vibration analysis was performed and the dynamic stiffness of the final proposed model was reviewed. Additionally, fatigue analysis was performed to ascertain the fatigue characteristics due to simple repetitive loading. Finally, stiffness test was performed for the final proposed model to verify the analysis results. The obtained results differed from the analysis result by 2.9%. Consequently, the performance of the final proposed model was superior to that of the initial model with respect to not only the SPR fastening quality but also the reliability of continuous and repetitive processes.
In density-based topology optimization, 0/1 solutions are sought. Discrete topological problems are often relaxed with continuous design variables so that they can be solved using continuous mathematical programming. Although the relaxed methods are practical, grey areas appear in the optimum topologies. SIMP (Solid Isotropic Microstructures with Penalization) employs penalty schemes to suppress the intermediate densities. SRV (the Sum of the Reciprocal Variables) drives the solution to a 0/1 layout with the SRV constraint. However, both methods cannot effectively remove all the grey areas. SRV has some numerical aspects. In this work, a new scheme SIMP-SRV is proposed by combining SIMP and SRV approaches, where SIMP is employed to generate an intermediate solution to initialize the design variables and SRV is then adopted to produce the final design. The new method turned out to be very effective in conjunction with the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) when using for the stiffness topology optimization of continuum structures for minimum compliance. The numerical examples show that the hybrid technique can effectively remove all grey areas and generate stiffer optimal designs characterized with a sharper boundary in contrast to SIMP and SRV.

The tree topology in multicast systems has high transmission efficiency, low latency, but poor resilience to node failures. In our work, some nodes are selected as backbone nodes to construct a tree-like core overlay. Backbone nodes are reliable enough and have strong upload capacity as well, which is helpful to overcome the shortcomings of tree topology. The core overlay is organized into a spanning tree while the whole overlay is of mesh-like topology. This paper focuses on improving the performance of the application-layer multicast overlay by optimizing the core overlay which is periodically adjusted with the proposed optimization algorithm. Our approach is to construct the overlay tree based on the out-degree weighted reliability where the reliability of a node is weighted by its upload bandwidth (out-degree). There is no illegal solution during the evolution which ensures the evolution efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed approach greatly enhances the reliability of the tree-like core overlay systems and achieves shorter delay simultaneously. Its reliability performance is better than the reliability-first algorithm and its delay is very close to that of the degree-first algorithm. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is acceptable for application. Therefore the proposed approach is efficient for the topology optimization of a real multicast overlay.
IEEE 802.15.3 HR-WPAN is designed to enable wireless connectivity of high-speed, low-power, low-cost multimedia-capable portable consumer electronic devices. For quality of service, the standard specifies the use of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). However, during low contention TDMA gives much lower channel utilization and higher delays than CSMA (Carrier Sensing Multiple Access) because in TDMA, a node can transmit only during its scheduled time slots whereas in CSMA, nodes can transmit at any time as long as there is no contention. By mixing CSMA and TDMA, Hybrid MAC becomes more robust to timing failures, time-varying channel conditions, slot assignment failures and topology changes than a stand-alone TDMA.

Currently used 3D models, which are mostly focused on visualization of 3D objects and lack topological structure, have limitation in being used for 3D spatial analyses and applications. However, implementing a full topology for the indoor spatial objects is less practical due to the increase of complexity and computation time. This study suggests an alternative method to build a 3D indoor model with less complexity using a spatial DBMS. Storing spatial and nonspatial information of indoor spaces in DB tables enables faster queries, computation and analyses. Also it is possible to display them in 2D or 3D using the queried information. This study suggests a 2D-3D hybrid data model, which combines the 2D topology constructed from CAD floor plans and stored in a spatial DBMS and the 3D visualization functionality. This study showed the process to build the proposed model in a spatial DBMS and use spatial functions and queries to visualize in 2D and 3D. And, then, as an example application, it illustrated the process to build an indoor evacuation simulator.
