  • As software technology is in progress and software quantification is getting more important, many metrics have been proposed to quantify a variety of system entities. These metrics can be classified into two different forms : scalar metric and metric vector. Though some recent studies pointed out the composition problem of the scalar metric form, many scalar metrics are successfully used in software development organizations due to their practical applications. In this paper, it is concluded that hybrid metric form weighting external complexity is most suitable for scalar metric form. With this concept, a general framework for hybrid metrics construction independent of the development methodologies and target system type is proposed. This framework was successfully used in two projects that quantify the analysis phase of the structured methodology and the design phase of the object oriented real-time system, respectively. Any organization can quantify system entities in a short time using this framework.

  • In this paper, solar-powered, multi-scale, vibration-impedance sensor node on Imote2 platform is presented for hybrid structural health monitoring (SHM) in cable-stayed bridge. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are proposed. Firstly, vibration- and impedance-based hybrid SHM methods are briefly described. Secondly, the multi-scale vibration and impedance sensor node on Imote2-platform is presented on the design of hardware components and embedded software for vibration- and impedance-based SHM. In this approach, a solar-powered energy harvesting is implemented for autonomous operation of the smart sensor nodes. Finally, the feasibility and practicality of the smart sensor-based SHM system is evaluated on a full-scale cable-stayed bridge, Hwamyung Bridge in Korea. Successful level of wireless communication and solar-power supply for smart sensor nodes are verified. Also, vibration and impedance responses measured from the target bridge which experiences various weather conditions are examined for the robust long-term monitoring capability of the smart sensor system.

  • Magnetite nanoparticles(NPs) have been the subject of much interest by researchers owing to their potential use as magnetic carriers in drug targeting and as a tumor treatment in cases of hyperthermia. However, magnetite nanoparticles with 10 nm in diameter easily aggregate and thus create large secondary particles. To disperse magnetite nanoparticles, this study proposes the infiltration of magnetite nanoparticles into hybrid silica aerogels. The feasible dispersion of magnetite is necessary to target tumor cells and to treat hyperthermia. Magnetite NPs have been synthesized by coprecipitation, hydrothermal and thermal decomposition methods. In particular, monodisperse magnetite NPs are known to be produced by the thermal decomposition of iron oleate. In this study, we thermally decomposed iron acetylacetonate in the presence of oleic acid, oleylamine and 1,2 hexadecanediol. We also attempted to disperse magnetite NPs within a mesoporous aerogels. Methyltriethoxysilicate(MTEOS)-based hybrid silica aerogels were synthesized by a supercritical drying method. To incorporate the magnetite nanoparticles into the hybrid aerogels, we devised two methods: adding the synthesized aerogel into a magnetite precursor solution followed by nucleation and crystal growth within the pores of the aerogels, and the infiltration of magnetite nanoparticles synthesized beforehand into aerogel matrices by immersing the aerogels in a magnetite nanoparticle colloid solution. An analysis using a vibrating sample magnetometer showed that approximately 20% of the magnetite nanoparticles were well dispersed in the aerogels. The composite samples showed that heating under an inductive magnetic field to a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ is possible.

  • Ti based nanocomposite films including V, Si and Nb (Ti-Me-N, Me=V, Si and Nb) were fabricated by hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) method consisting of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP). The pure Ti target was used for arc ion plating and other metal targets (V, Si and Nb) were used for sputtering process at a gas mixture of Ar/$N_2$ atmosphere. Mostly all of the films were grown with textured TiN (111) plane except the Si doped Ti-Si-N film which has strong (200) peak. The microhardness of each film was measured using the nanoindentation method. The minimum value of removal rate ($0.5{\times}10^{-15}\;m^2/N$) was found at Nb doped Ti-Nb-N film which was composed of Ti-N and Nb-N nanoparticles with small amount of amorphous phases.

  • In this research, we proposed a two-phase hybrid stock price forecasting model with cointegration tests and artificial neural networks. Using not only the related stocks to the target stock but also the past information as input features in neural networks, the new model showed an improved performance in forecasting than that of the usual neural networks. Firstly in order to extract stocks which have long run relationships with the target stock, we made use of Johansen's cointegration test. In stock market, some stocks are apt to vary similarly and these phenomenon can be very informative to forecast the target stock. Johansen's cointegration test provides whether variables are related and whether the relationship is statistically significant. Secondly, we learned the model which includes lagged variables of the target and related stocks in addition to other characteristics of them. Although former research usually did not incorporate those variables, it is well known that most economic time series data are depend on its past value. Also, it is common in econometric literatures to consider lagged values as dependent variables. We implemented a price direction forecasting system for KOSPI index to examine the performance of the proposed model. As the result, our model had 11.29% higher forecasting accuracy on average than the model learned without cointegration test and also showed 10.59% higher on average than the model which randomly selected stocks to make the size of the feature set same as that of the proposed model.

  • This paper proposes a cross-layer design combining adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with truncated hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for wireless multicast transmission, in order to increase the spectral efficiency while meeting the target quality-of-service (QoS). In the design, we provide the selection criterion of AMC so as to satisfy the target packet error rate (PER) of all users when the multicast data is received through the common channel and the number of retransmission is limited by the delay constraint of the service. The analytically derived results show that the cross-layer design using HARQ provides a better spectral efficiency than the AMC without HARQ by allowing retransmission and code combining. It is also observed that the design for multicast outperforms that for unicast in the mid to high signal-to-noise ratio region.

  • As the quantum gate matrix is a $r^{n+1}{\times}r^{n+1}$ dimension when the radix is r, the number of control state vectors is n, and the number of target state vectors is one, the matrix dimension with increasing n is exponentially increasing. If the number of control state vectors is $2^n$, then the number of $2^n-1$ unit matrix operations preserves the output from the input, and only one can be performed the unitary operation to the target state vector. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of function embedding that can replace $2^n-1$ times of unit matrix operations with deterministic contribution to matrix dimension by arithmetic power switch of the unitary gate. The proposed function embedding method uses a binary literal switch with a multivalued threshold, so that a general purpose hybrid MCU gate can be realized in a $r{\times}r$ unitary matrix.

  • Three novel Class A genes that encode heat shock transcription factor (HSF) were cloned from Oryza Sativa L using a yeast hybrid method. The OsHSF7 gene was found to be rapidly expressed in high levels in response to temperature, which indicates that it may be involved in heat stress reception and response. Over-expression of OsHSF7 in transgenic Arabidopsis could not induced over the expression of most target heat stress-inducible genes of HSFs; however, the transcription of some HSF target genes was more abundant in transgenic plants following two hours of heat stress treatment. In addition, those transgenic plants also had a higher basal thermotolerance, but not acquired thermotolerance. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that OsHSF7 might play an important role in the response to high temperature. Specifically, these findings indicate that OsHSF7 may be useful in the production of transgenic monocots that can over-express protective genes such as HSPs in response to heat stress, which will enable such plants to tolerate high temperatures.

  • A synthetic cecropin A(1-13)-melittin(1-13) [CA-ME] hybrid peptide was known to be an antimicrobial peptide having strong antibacterial, antifungal and antitumor activity with minimal cytotoxic effect against human erythrocyte. Analogues were synthesized to investigate the influences of the flexible hinge region of CA-ME on the antibiotic activity. Antibiotic activity of the peptides was measured by the growth inhibition against bac-terial, fungal and tumor cells and vesicle-aggregating or disrupting activity. The deletion of Gln-Gly-Ile (P1) or Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly (P3) from CA-ME brought about a significant decrease on the antibiotic activities. In contrast, Gly-Ile-Gly deletion (P2) from CA-ME or Pro insertion (P5) instead of Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly of CA-ME retained antibiotic activity. This result indicated that the flexible hinge or β-bend structure provided by Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly, Gln-Gly, or Pro in the central region of the peptides is requisite for its effective antibiotic activity and may facilitate easily the hydrophobic C-terminal region of the peptide to penetrate the lipid bilayers of the target cell membrane. In contrast, P4 and P6 with Gly-Gln-Gly-Pro-Gly or Gly-Gln-Pro in the central region of the peptide caused a drastic reduction on the antibiotic activities. This result suggested that the con-secutive β-bend structure provided by Gly-Gln-Gly-Pro-Gly or Gly-Gln-Pro in the central hinge region of the peptide seems to interrupt the ion channel/pore formation on the target cell membranes.

  • In order to transmute long-lived radioactive nuclides such as transuranics(TRU), Tc-99, and I- l29 in LWR spent fuel, a preliminary conceptual design study has been performed for the accelerator driven subcritical reactor system, called HYPER(Hybrid Power Extraction Reactor) The core has a hybrid neutron energy spectrum: fast and thermal neutrons for the transmutation of TRU and fission products, respectively. TRU is loaded into the HYPER core as a TRU-Zr metal form because a metal type fuel has very good compatibility with the pyre- chemical process which retains the self-protection of transuranics at all times. On the other hand, Tc-99 and I-129 are loaded as pure technetium metal and sodium iodide, respectively. Pb-Bi is chosen as a primary coolant because Pb-Bi can be a good spallation target and produce a very hard neutron energy spectrum. As a result, the HYPER system does not have any independent spallation target system. 9Cr-2WVTa is used as a window material because an advanced ferritic/martensitic steel is known to have a good performance under a highly corrosive and radiation environment. The support ratios of the HYPER system are about 4∼5 for TRU, Tc-99, and I-129. Therefore, a radiologically clean nuclear power, i.e. zero net production of TRU, Tc-99 and I-129 can be achieved by combining 4 ∼5 LWRs with one HYPER system. In addition, the HYPER system, having good proliferation resistance and high nuclear waste transmutation capability, is believed to provide a breakthrough to the spent fuel problems the nuclear industry is faced with.
