A Hybrid CBPWM Scheme for Single-Phase Three-Level Converters

  • A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.

Novel Five-Level Three-Phase Hybrid-Clamped Converter with Reduced Components

  • This study proposes a novel five-level three-phase hybrid-clamped converter composed of only six switches and one flying capacitor (FC) per phase. The capacitor-voltage-drift phenomenon of the converter under the classical sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) strategy is comprehensively analyzed. The average current, which flows into the FC, is a function of power factor and modulation index and does not remain at zero. Thus, a specific modulation strategy based on space vector modulation (SVM) is developed to balance the voltage of DC-link and FCs by injecting a common-mode voltage. This strategy applies the five-segment method to synthesize the voltage vector, such that switching losses are reduced while optional vector sequences are increased. The best vector sequence is then selected on the basis of the minimized cost function to suppress the divergence of the capacitor voltage. This study further proposes a startup method that charges the DC-link and FCs without any additional circuits. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed converter, modulation strategy, and precharge method.

New Generalized PWM Schemes for Multilevel Inverters Providing Zero Common-Mode Voltage and Low Current Distortion

  • This paper presents two advanced hybrid pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategies for multilevel inverters (MLIs) that provide both common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination and current ripple reduction. The first PWM utilizes sequences that apply one switching state at the double ends of a half-carrier cycle. The second PWM combines the advantages of the former and an existing four-state PWM. Analyses of the harmonic characteristics of the two groups of switching sequences based on a general switching voltage model are carried out, and algorithms to optimize the current ripple are proposed. These methods are simple and can be implemented online for general n-level inverters. Using a three-level NPC inverter and a five-level CHB inverter, good performances in terms of the root mean square current ripple are obtained with the proposed PWM schemes as indicated through improved harmonic distortion factors when compared to existing schemes in almost the entire region of the modulation index. This also leads to a significant reduction in the current total harmonic distortion. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed PWM methods.

Dual Vector Control Strategy for a Three-Stage Hybrid Cascaded Multilevel Inverter

  • This paper presents a voltage control algorithm for a hybrid multilevel inverter based on a staged-perception of the inverter voltage vector diagram. The algorithm is applied to control a three-stage eighteen-level hybrid inverter, which has been designed with a maximum number of symmetrical levels. The inverter has a two-level main stage built using a conventional six-switch inverter and medium- and low- voltage three-level stages constructed using cascaded H-bridge cells. The distinctive feature of the proposed algorithm is its ability to avoid the undesirable high switching frequency for high- and medium- voltage stages despite the fact that the inverter's dc sources voltages are selected to maximize the number of levels by state redundancy elimination. The high- and medium- voltage stages switching algorithms have been developed to assure fundamental switching frequency operation of the high voltage stage and not more than few times this frequency for the medium voltage stage. The low voltage stage is controlled using a SVPWM to achieve the reference voltage vector exactly and to set the order of the dominant harmonics. The inverter has been constructed and the control algorithm has been implemented. Test results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the desired features and all of the major hypotheses have been verified.

  • This paper considers a hybrid PWM(pulse width modulation) method which can be used in the brushless DC motor controller. Due to many disadvantages of bipolar PWM method, unipolar PWM method is mostly used in industrial field. In constant speed control application, the unipolar PWM method shows the good performance of speed control. But in the wide range of speed control application, it shows poor performance especially when deceleration is needed. So we propose the hybrid PWM method that utilizes both of bipolar and unipolar PWM methods according to the sign of the speed controller output. Simulation and experimental result show that the proposed method improves speed control performance of the brushless DC motor which is applied to the industrial sewing machines.

  • A hybrid control of a rectifier/regulator of wireless power transfer systems for electric vehicles is studied. A combined rectifier/regulator is used for charging control. The hybrid control comprises integral cycle control and pulse width modulation control to cope with the variations in the induced voltage due to clearance and alignment. The hybrid control has good control capability and does not cause severe switching loss. A 22 kW prototype of the Wireless Power Transfer class 4 charging system defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers is constructed and tested to verify the proposal.

  • This paper treats the optimization of rotor construction in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric vehicle (EV). While the field system of PMSM has generally one magnet per pole, we replace the magnet into plural sub-magnets. The dimensions of each sub-magnet are determined by the concept of pulse width modulation (PWM). By adopting the proposed rotor construction, we can not only reduce the space harmonics of the air-gap field but also provide space for rotor bars (i.e., damper windings) around the direct-axis. From the investigation by hybrid EE-BE (coupled finite element and boundary element) method coupled with both electric circuit and motion equation, we verify that the construction is effective for practical use.

  • This paper considers pulse width modulation (PWM) methods which are used in 3-phase brushless DC motor controller. Due to many disadvantages of bipolar PWM method, unipolar PWM method is mostly used in industrial field. In constant speed control application, the unipolar PWM method shows a good performance of speed control. So we propose hybrid PWM method that utilizes two PWM methods according to the sign of speed controller output.   • A major problem in conventional multilevel inverter is that an increase in power semiconductor switches causes an increase in cost and switching losses of the inverter. The multicarrier strategy adopted for the multilevel inverters has become more popular due to reduced cost, lower harmonic distortion, and higher voltage capability than the conventional switching strategy applied to inverters. Various topologies and modulation strategies have been reported for utility and drive applications. Level shifted based pulse width modulation techniques are proposed to investigate the performance of the multilevel inverter. The proposed work focuses on reducing the utilized switches so that the cost and the switching losses of the inverter do not go up and the consistent efficiency could be achieved. This paper presents the detailed analysis of these topologies. The analysis is based on the number of switches, DC sources, output level, maximum voltage, and the efficiency. As an illustration, single phase cascaded multilevel inverter topologies are simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the experimental results demonstrate the viability of these inverters.

A Hybrid Random Pulse Width Modulation(HRPWM) Technique Using LF2407 DSP Controller (LF2407 DSP제어기를 사용한 혼합형 랜덤 펄스폭 변조(HRPWM)기법)

  • 본 연구에서는 LF2407 DSP제어기를 사용한 혼합형 랜덤 펄스폭 변조기법(HRPWM : Hybrid Random PWM)을 제안하였다. 제안된 HRPWM은 PRBS (Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence)로 동작하는 시프트 레지스터의 lead-lag 랜덤 비트를 사용한다는 점에서 종전의 방법과 동일하다. 그러나 Lead-Lag 랜덤 비트와 논리적인 비교를 하기 위해 고정 주파수의 캐리어를 사용 하지 않고 랜덤 주파수의 삼각파 캐리어를 이용한다는 점이 종전의 방법과 다르다. LF2407 DSP에 의하여 랜덤 수 및 PRBS 그리고 3상 기준 정현파를 실시간으로 발생하며, DSP외부의 주파수 변조기 MAX038에 의하여 랜덤 주파수의 캐리어를 발생한다. 제안된 기법을 LF2407기반의 3상 유도모터 구동장치에 적용한 결과, 모터 전류파형은 종전의 방법과 유사한 파형을 유지하면서도 모터 전압 및 전류의 고조파 스펙트럼은 광대역 주파수로 분포시킬 수 있었다.
